About this listing

A charming oasis of calm in brownstone Brooklyn. Our home is an eco-friendly dwelling with no transmitting wireless and low ambient levels. A safe place to stay while you visit NYC.

The space

Carroll Gardens is one of the most charming neighborhoods in Brooklyn and our home is one one of the quietest blocks with wonderful parks nearby, and the oft written about shopping boutiques and restaurants of Smith and Court Streets just minutes from the front door. Carroll Park with it's popular children's play area is three blocks away.

We have two separate rooms available with private bath in a modern, renovated 1864 carriage house - it's a single family home located on a super quiet, tree-lined block. At night it's rare to hear anything and you'll wake up to the sound of birds singing in the tree branches in the front garden. For more info about Carroll Gardens - (URL HIDDEN)

It's a quick one and a half blocks to trendy Smith Street's restaurant row, bars and shops and 2 minutes walk to the F train, ten to the R train. Soho is 15 minutes away by F-train. It's a lovely 25 minute walk through Cobble Hill and historic Brooklyn Heights to the Brooklyn Bridge or east through Park Slope to Prospect Park. Our home is in a safe, diverse neighborhood with young families, singles and retirees who gather on their stoops for a chat.

With all of the concerns about the health effects of wireless radiation on living organisms, a special thing about our home is that it has been evaluated and certified by a Bau Biologist as safe for those who may be sensitive to electromagnetic fields and wireless radiation as well as it is mold-free and toxin free (we do have a dog). We do not have any devices emitting wifi, bluetooth, smart meter or cordless phone radiation. If you would benefit from a less toxic environment for health reasons, our home can be a safe haven as you travel to NYC. We use chemical free soaps for our laundry, cleaners for the household surfaces and all food and toiletries are organic. Feel free to contact us with your specific needs or questions.

The two rooms are adjacent one another on the second floor and one or both are available depending upon your needs. Each room has a twin bunk bed and the larger room has it's own seating area, and a hard-wired computer with wired printer. The smaller room is sized mainly for sleeping. Both rooms have air conditioning and the house has steam heat in the winter. The set up is perfect for friends, solo travelers or couples who, ahem, like a bit of quiet at night away from a snoring partner. Families with children will enjoy the playful space.

We're very easy going, have a clean and creative home and our interests are eclectic. We love Brooklyn and NYC and are happy to help you with suggestions for visiting some of the locals-only sights. There is surprisingly easy street parking on our block for those of you driving in. Also available: internet, cable and a lovable terrier mutt, Roxy and her friend, Nia. Roxy is very good with kids and people of all sizes. Nia is a golden retriever dachshund mix with incredibly soft fur and a sweet face. For families traveling with kids - there is no charge for children who sleep with you or in a pack-n-play. If they need a bed of their own, please include them in your guest count. The rooms sleep 4, total.

Guest access

You have free run of the house, living room and kitchen during your stay. The downstairs 1/2 bathroom is exclusively yours and you can unpack your stuff and make yourself at home there. At the moment, we have one shared bath for a shower and a much lower price that reflects this. We've had many guests visit this way and it really does work out fine. Hopefully by summer we'll have our guest bath finished.

Interaction with guests

We love answering questions, helping to plan outings and give advice. We're also happy to give you space and have guests come and go on their own - we chat and say 'hi' as well as happily go about our business while you come and go. We've had guests cook their own meals and share meals with us. There are amazing restaurants just a couple of blocks away and a Whole Foods 4 minutes on foot. Whatever works for you is just fine with us.

Elizabeth and Jeff's house is the perfect haven in all of Brooklyn. I stayed for 5 nights over Memorial Day weekend. Their family is gracious and welcoming, warm and inviting.... the kind of people you feel like you've known your entire life. Their dogs are adorable and loving. It was hard to leave! The minute I walked in to their lovely carriage house, I felt at home and at peace. The entire house is stylish and comfortable. And most importantly for me, they have the safest space to rest from the pulsating wireless city outside their door. They've taken great efforts to ensure their home is based on building biology standards for indoor environmental health. No mold, no chemicals, and concentrated attention to creating a low EMF (electromagnetic field) space. They have a wired home (rooms have Ethernet hook-ups for internet), a corded landline for phone calls. and an "all devices off" policy at night, which really helps the body calm down and sleep. For anyone who is seeking a respite away from wireless tech and other common environmental toxins, but still wants to be in NYC with all the metropolis has to offer, Elizabeth and Jeff's house is an ideal location to stay. My body relaxed for the first time in years, while staying in their home. Plus, they are positioned conveniently to the best coffee shops (amazing coffee in Brooklyn!) and a Whole Foods market down the road. For any future trips to NYC, I would definitely stay here again. Their house is a sanctuary in the city!

This is the third time I have stayed with Elizabeth and Jeff. They are a very hard working couple and I enjoy my time with them and the dogs.

This was my second stay with Elizabeth and Jeff, who informed me in advance about the bathroom repairs going on in the bathroom that would have been assigned to me. They were good to have me stay at their place despite the difficulty of having a guest during the repair work. For me, the inconvenince of sharing a bathroom was minor compared to the benefit of enjoying their excellent hospitality. I was in New York to spend time with friends. The location could not be better for me for this stay as my friends were living with their son, wife and grandchild in an apartment that was just a few blocks away. I would strongly conisder staying here again. Roxy was a joy as usual

It's always been Elizabeth's dream to havand her home is a haven within the city. She is a textile designer, artist, avid gardener and loves to cook. Her latest passion is writing fiction and a new business helping homeowners renovate their apartments based on her own experience with several apartments and now their 1864 carriage house. She and her husband, Jeff, love the Carroll Gardens area - especially walking their dog, Roxy, and chatting with neighbors.
