A message from Claire. Please note that I have 8 rooms available but only two listings on Airbnb. Our listings are Makindye House and Makindye House Annexe which are both on the same compound. In other words, please ignore that calendar as it does not reflect whether or not we have available rooms. Please get in touch I will be let you know the true situation regarding vacancies. I look forward to hearing from you with any questions you may have about the house, Kampala or Uganda.

The space

A large comfortable shared house in a quiet, safe Kampala suburb.
Please don't pay too much attention to the calendar because we let 8 rooms and it was too complicated to have 8 separate listings. So please get in touch and I will let you know if and what rooms we have available for the dates that you are requesting. We currently have just the two listings, Makindye House and Makindye House Annexe. We let 4 rooms in the main house and 4 rooms in the annexe (1 small @ $8 pppn, 2 small @ $10 pppn, 1 large @ $12 pppn, 1 large $13 pppn, and 1 large $15pppn). There is also the Airbnb fee.

Out of consideration for our clientele (students and volunteers etc.) we try to keep our charges low. This however does not mean that the standard of accommodation is low. Just look at the photos! Four excellent staff are employed to clean all rooms, wash your dishes, washing and ironing daily and 24 hour guard.

Most of our guests come from Europe and the US and include medical students, development workers, development studies students, doctors, volunteers, tourists etc. Our house is a home away from home for our many young visitors. Our visitors often go out together or just hang out on the balcony chilling and chatting.
We have fresh salad which comes in every day from the garden and you are welcome to help yourself. Also any fruit from the garden is for sharing with the guests.

Friendly informal atmosphere. Safe area. Walking distance from market, internet, shops, public transport and the Makindye Country Club which has swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, gym, restaurant. etc. If you a tennis player, please pack your trainers. We have spare rackets you can borrow. A boda boda (small motorbike) ride from city centre.

We have three dogs which are NOT allowed in the house.

Guest access

Other than the bedrooms and private bathrooms, all areas are communal spaces and available for you to enjoy especially the quiet area on the veranda.

Interaction with guests

Please note that the although very friendly, dogs must remain outside and should not be encouraged to come into the house or rooms.
I am around during term time but return to UK during the school holidays. During these times Grace the housekeeper runs the house. I am in regular contact with Grace and with the guests whilst I am away. I enjoy interacting with guests when I am around but mostly they socialise with each other or watch videos together. Guests often go out as a group or even take trips away together. It is a VERY sociable house so if you are new to Kampala you have friends waiting for you at the house. Salad, avocados and other fruits in season are shared. Sunday the gardener grows salad and it comes into the house fresh every day. If you don't eat it, he will stop growing it!!

Other things to note

Neighbourhood overview
If you walk just a few meters up the hill you will get wonderful views of the city below. Makindye is a quiet neighbourhood with a real sense of community. Neighbours will regularly stop an offer you a lift up the hill. They will guess that you are going to Claire's house. Coffee at Last which is opposite the Makindye County Club has free WiFi, great brownies and take away meals. Please mention that Claire sent you! The Makindye Country Club or MCC has a pool, squash and tennis courts, gym and restaurant. You can get a short term membership or pay a daily fee. The Makindye Market takes place every Friday. It has a wide range of fruit and veg.
One of the nicest things about the house is that all the young people take care of each other and often cook together or go out for a meal or to a bar at the weekend. So, if you are new to Kampala, your new friends are waiting for you at the Makindye House.

House Rules

Since clothes are hand washed we kindly request that you wash your underwear yourself with the basin and soap provided. All laundry must be ironed to avoid the mango fly which lays its eggs in clothes, and can then burrow into your skin. Not nice, but ironing kills the eggs.
Please pick up your clean laundry from the laundry shelf.
Dirty laundry goes in the basket in the bathroom next to Room 1.
Please eat the salad that comes into the house each day. If you don't eat it, Sunday the gardener won't grow it!!
It is not safe to drink the tap water. The fridge is always full of filtered water.
Be sure to find out where the fire escapes are.
No house guests unless arranged in advance. For reasons of security, we are very strict about this rule.
No prostitutes.
Smoking only in the garden (not on the veranda or in the rooms)
Lock front door on entering and leaving the house.
Last person to bed turns off lights!

Cannot recommend this place enough. Everything you need (and more) to be comfortable in Kampala. Comfortable rooms, kitchenware, laundry and cleaning service. Friendly roommates to explore Kampala with, and Claire is always available. Quiet neighborhood, with most necessities walkable. I am making this my home-base in Kampala, and will continue to do so on return visits.

Makindye House is a fantastic option for those looking for a quiet, friendly place to stay in Kampala. Claire was away when I visited, but her fabulous staff went above and beyond to make me feel welcome and cared for. I've been coming to Uganda for nine years and I look forward to staying at Makindye House again when I return.

I was so fortunate to find a free room at Claire's beautiful place in Makindiye. It was last minute, and not only did she respond instantly to my message, she offered the airport pickup at a very fair rate and at a very late hour. I ended up only spending one full night at Claire's place because I was able to take a friend's place for free. When I told Claire this (on day 3, upon returning to pick up some laundry), she generously offered to reimburse me for the stay. I was really taken aback by the gesture. But to would-be tenants -- the place is great. I've stayed in Makindiye for weeks before this, and I've loved it. Claire's place is a quiet, green refuge from the bustle of Kampala. Of note: the shower is nice and hot. The dogs are docile and personable. The staff are outgoing, polite, professional. The room was tidy and well-equipped, with a large bed (and bed net), a nice bedside lamp, a writing table, a dresser. All I needed. It's a pleasant ten-minute, downhill walk to the boda station (where you can get a lift into town) and a couple restaurants. I highly recommend this place, which is usually full for a reason: it's steal of a deal. But again, the host herself is tops. Thank you, Claire for your hospitality, look forward to returning on my next visit to KLA.

Makindye House is set up Makindye Hill in great location with well manicured gardens seen from the veranda overlooking the town below. Claire couldn't haven't been a more accommodating and gracious host as there were a couple challenges regarding my itinerary and delays in scheduling. The staff is also so very kind, helpful and cheerful which also reflect on the host and reveal an all around pleasant environment. I also loved having the dogs to welcome me in each time with a playful attitude and tails wagging :) I made Makindye House my base as traveled around the country and when returning felt I was coming home. The well equipped kitchen is great for saving money and preparing your own meals and eating in a relaxed atmosphere in the common areas inside or outside. And after spending time in Uganda I could appreciate immensely the refrigerator, freezer and hot water heater for the shower!

I stayed at Claire's place for a couple of weeks. The listing was just as described and the host was lovely. Claire was flexible with my check-out date, since I was not sure how long it would take for me to get everything in order in Kampala before heading up north to Gulu. The location of the place is great -- quiet and within walking distance of a gym. Consistent electricity, hot showers (with towels provided), mosquito nets, etc. everything one needs and would hope for!
