A large comfortable shared house in a quiet, safe Kampala suburb.
Please don't pay too much attention to the calendar because we let 8 rooms and it was too complicated to have 8 separate listings. So please get in touch and I will let you know if and what rooms we have available for the dates that you are requesting. We currently have just the two listings, Makindye House and Makindye House Annexe. We let 4 rooms in the main house and 4 rooms in the annexe (1 small @ $8 pppn, 2 small @ $10 pppn, 1 large @ $12 pppn, 1 large $13 pppn, and 1 large $15pppn).
Out of consideration for our clientele (students and volunteers etc.) we try to keep our charges low. This however does not mean that the standard of accommodation is low. Just look at the photos! Five excellent staff are employed to clean all rooms, clean dishes, washing and ironing daily and 24 hour guard.
Most of our guests come from Europe and the US and include medical students, development workers, development studies students, doctors, volunteers, tourists etc. Our house is a home away from home for our many young visitors. Our visitors often go out together or just hang out on the balcony chilling and chatting.
Friendly informal atmosphere. Safe area. Walking distance from market, internet, shops, public transport and the American Club which has swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, restaurant. etc. A boda boda (small motorbike) ride from city centre.
We have three dogs which are NOT allowed in the house.
No house guests unless arranged in advance.
Smoking only in the garden (not on the veranda or in the rooms)
Lock front door on entering and leaving the house.
Last person to bed turns off lights!
I spent a wonderful two weeks in Claire's lovely house in March 2015. Claire is a fantastic host and makes you feel very welcome and at home from the moment you arrive. It's the little touches like the welcome note, fresh flowers in the house, etc. that make this place extra special. The house is situated in a nice leafy part of Kampala, only a 15-20 boda drive from the centre of town so it's the perfect base to explore the city while at the same time having a lovely tranquil place to come back to in the evening. Rooms are a good size and clean and all of the staff are friendly and very attentive. If you're looking for a comfortable, affordable place to stay in Kampala and meet cool people, book in now, you won't be disappointed! Thanks for everything Claire, I had a great stay!!
I stayed at Claire's place for a couple of weeks. The listing was just as described and the host was lovely. Claire was flexible with my check-out date, since I was not sure how long it would take for me to get everything in order in Kampala before heading up north to Gulu. The location of the place is great -- quiet and within walking distance of a gym. Consistent electricity, hot showers (with towels provided), mosquito nets, etc. everything one needs and would hope for!
I came to work in Kampala for 2 weeks - my stay would have been completely different if I hasn't had the good fortune to stay with Claire. It has SUCH a warm, friendly and family vibe. The house and garden is beautiful and comfortable and you can make your own food and socialise as you wish. Above all, Claire, Grace and Bosco and the team are just the most hospitable and lovely hosts - thank you so much!!
A lovely house in a beautiful, green, and quiet part of Kampala. Terrific garden! The location makes for very quick access to downtown Kampala via bodas or taxis, yet you feel like you’re “away from it all.” Claire and her staff are extremely hospitable, and the house attracts a great group of interesting and friendly people. I can’t imagine a more comfortable and pleasant place to stay, whether for a few days or a much longer period.
Lovely house in one of the nicer (and more local) areas of Kampala! Great to meet likeminded people and make friends whilst abroad!
Claire’s house is a wonderful place and I enjoyed it a lot to stay there for five weeks. In advance as well as during my time in Kampala Claire answered me a lot of questions making my preparations for the trip as well as settling in much easier. Claire and the other housemates gave me a warm welcome always open to include new guests to the activities going on in and around Makindye. Claire’s house is perfectly equipped with a lot of practical (towels, Boda helmets, drinking water) as well as enjoyable (DVDs, books, guide books) things that you might need during your stay. Makindye is not very close to the city centre but there are a lot of possibilities how to go to town and for me the daily trip to town was absolutely worth for staying at this amazing place.
I had a great stay at Claire's house, unfortunately only a week, but I highly recommend it. Nice room with desk to work at, bed with mozzie net, solar light in case of power outage. Hot water, everything you could possibly need in a kitchen, friendly staff and nice common areas. It's easy to reach the city center by boda or minibus taxi (a short walk away). Claire is a very warm and welcoming host!
