A large comfortable shared house in a quiet, safe Kampala suburb.
Please don't pay too much attention to the calendar because we let 8 rooms and it was too complicated to have 8 separate listings. So please get in touch and I will let you know if and what rooms we have available for the dates that you are requesting. We currently have just the two listings, Makindye House and Makindye House Annexe. We let 4 rooms in the main house and 4 rooms in the annexe (1 small @ $8 pppn, 2 small @ $10 pppn, 1 large @ $12 pppn, 1 large $13 pppn, and 1 large $15pppn).
Out of consideration for our clientele (students and volunteers etc.) we try to keep our charges low. This however does not mean that the standard of accommodation is low. Just look at the photos! Five excellent staff are employed to clean all rooms, clean dishes, washing and ironing daily and 24 hour guard.
Most of our guests come from Europe and the US and include medical students, development workers, development studies students, doctors, volunteers, tourists etc. Our house is a home away from home for our many young visitors. Our visitors often go out together or just hang out on the balcony chilling and chatting.
Friendly informal atmosphere. Safe area. Walking distance from market, internet, shops, public transport and the American Club which has swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, restaurant. etc. A boda boda (small motorbike) ride from city centre.
We have three dogs which are NOT allowed in the house.
I was only at Makindye for a week, but it felt like home - the place is beautiful, comfortable, and full of warmth. I would highly recommend it to travelers!
Claire's house was the perfect stay for me. I learned a lot about Uganda and Easy Africa from her. She encouraged me to go to Merchason Falls, which I enjoyed. She took me to the local swim club. She's quite active, but found time for her guests!
It was my first time in Uganda and travelling alone, therefore, I left slightly anxious. But I have to say that I felt at home as soon as I arrived at Claire's guest house and met her. I had a wonderful stay, met very friendly, enthusiastic and interesting guests (who I will deeply miss) and received great advice about everything and anything to make my stay the most enjoyable possible. I felt so much at home that I got quite upset when it was time to leave! I will definitely book my stay with Claire again (and again...) when planing another trip there. Thank you Claire.
What a beautiful, beautiful place and a relaxing stay! My husband and I are so glad that we could stay at Claire's home for nine days while in Kampala. Our room was in the main house and was very comfortable. The bathroom was spotless and has a hot shower, which we really appreciated! The shared kitchen was a huge plus since we could cook dinner for ourselves every night. The front yard has an amazing view of Kampala, especially beautiful in the morning with a cup of tea or at night fall, when the distant lights flicker on as the sun goes down.
Claire's place is in a peaceful neighborhood up on the hill but is really close to the center of Kampala, so we could easily go into town meet friends. There's a cafe not far away where we got on the internet whenever we needed and we made sure to stop by the country club, which has day passes for a small fee, so that we could enjoy the pool and tennis courts. Plus, the road going past is a quiet one, nice for a morning run.
Everyone at the house was great, so welcoming and helpful. Even the three dogs are total sweethearts! We enjoyed watching a couple of movies from Claire's *extensive* collection during the evening and just chatting with other guests. The house was the perfect combination of private and shared space, so we could hang out with other people or get some rest, depending on how we felt.
We are both so glad that we stayed at Claire's and will definitely plan on staying again when we next find ourselves in Kampala. Huge thanks to Claire and everyone at the house for making our stay so comfortable and for welcoming us so warmly!
Makindye House is located in a quiet area of Kampala, surrounded by green it's a perfect spot for chilling out. Claire is a perfect host, kind and friendly, you would feel at home...
