Barra Mansa offers shelter in two houses standing in front of the sea, surrounded by a land kepted with the natural vegetation . The main house is a family country house with a cosy interior for some hard winter days (not many in Portugal but we have some). In this house you will find an unmatched and graceful space, distant from Sintra’s residential areas.
The main house was the first one to be built in 1981. Its interior reflects the owners character, by keeping the family memories and the inspiration from those who have lived in it.
It has a big and versatile lounge, that usually is used for gatherings, feasts or specials ocasions, but is also appreciated by individuals for personalized
moments. In the cold days of December, January or February a fire place enlivens and warms the atmosphere.
There are two bedrooms, one with a double bed, another one with two single beds, and a third small room with a wonderful view to the sea is equipped with a bunk and a dresserbut. There is also a large kitchen and a bathroom. The house suits perfectly for 4, 5 or 6 persons.
The place is ideal to rest, to enjoy nature and the country side. On the terrace the view dominate the sea vastness, the patio permit enjoying the sun in the windy days. The small woods around invite to rest retire or is used as a natural playgound for children. These ones enjoy our poultry. In a small orchard are cultivating by bio principles some fruit tree and vegetables. Ideal to rest all day or a good complement after a visiting progam or beach time .

They offer a possibility of having Portuguese culture and language lessons Their main concern are preserving natural and cultural aspect of the area, taking part in the culture of the region, they act to reduce the ambient footprint, look for enrich and share their point of view.
Near nature: The house is located in the natural park Sintra-Cascais where are kept large zones of natural vegetation and fauna . These landscapes can be enjoyed immediately from the house by foot, following the paths and tracks . Some like to rent bicycle or horse to do them. The house is situated 100 meters from the magnificent cliffs interrupted by beaches. Some of them are isolate and hard reaching, others more cosmopolite invite surfers, bathers and coast watchers. The region has geological and archeological interess in a more or less short range which make the place attractive for its diversity. We are situate in the northern part of Sintra region in the plateau where are the rural areas from where emerge Sintra mountain forming a green and luxuriant scene.
Near culture: All the natural richness of this area presents itself to be rich in culture. The natural beauty and pleasant weather invite populations and attract most exigent and fortunate people . For all times people make here their home since pre-historic times to our times incuding the 19 century whish legate us the romantic town of Sintra (now part of the World Heritage) , most beautiful palace, cottages and monastery scattered in the mountain. This lovely town is distant 15 Km from the Barra Mansa who is situated by the coast in the rural zone between two typical villages Azenhas do Mar and Fontanelas. Many more typical vilages can be found around preserving the saloia architecture mainly by chapels, houses, fountains, washing-places, watermills and windmills. We had a great time in Claire's lovely house. It's was everything we hoped for and more. Despite of our plans to go to Lisbon, we spent most of our time around the house. We only stayed for a week. Much to short to get to know this incredible country. But at least long enough to have a taste of it. Claire is the perfect host. Very helpful. We talked a lot about the nature around her house. It' s an isolated place, but in a positive way. Away from all kinds of distraction you can really enjoy the beauty of the landscape, see the light change...The kids ( 7 and 8) played around the house al lot. The never got bored. The dogs accompanied them. We would love to come back some day Claire!
This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful and magical places on Earth, Im so happy I got to spend a month there and got to know Claire! She is a very nice, friendly, super easy-going person, very helpful and interesting. I enjoyed our pancake breakfasts so much, Claire ;) There are a lot of animals around, including three very friendly dogs and a cat, that my two-year-old (and myself) enjoyed spending time with. The house is absolutely lovely, it has everything you need (there was even some food when we arrived), very cozy and makes you feel at home right away. It might be a bit cold in the winter, but then you've got a fireplace and a heater, so its not a problem at all. The surroundings are marvelous, you can see the ocean right from your window and the nature is wild and beautiful. Might be helpful to get a car if you intend to see more of Sintra, although even without one you can get by just fine (there are buses that come by every hour, and you can hike to the nearest villages, hiking is good for you:). So, to cut the long story short: loved this house and absolutely recommend it to anyone who want to have a wonderful rest in the middle of nature and recharge. I would do my best to come back one day. Claire, thank you so much once again for everything!
Claire is a great host! she reacted fast on the email and was also checking if everything was as we wished during our stay. We were there and of December so the house was cold. Prepare yourself by bringing a big warm sweater and warm slippers if you go there in winter time. But we were provided of enough wood to keep the fireplace burning. The environment is beautiful and very relaxing.
Thanks for the good care clair and hopefully until some other time!
The experience with Claire and Georges at hosts is unique, as they are very open people, interesting and interested by everything, so you can share a conversation with them anytime, they are also very helpful, and having them nearby is a plus.
Barra Mansa is also a unique place, our 4 years son enjoyed playing in the nature and learned lots of things with Claire about nature, vegetables, animals. There are three rooms so there is space enough for one or even two families. Sintra is very close and also the beaches. I highly recommend Barra Mansa.
Spending some days chez Claire is a magic experience. A kind of reconciliation with nature and with yourself. The surrounding is incredibly wild in the best way of the word and the house can't be more charming. We all felt from the first moment so confortable in such welcoming environment. Sunsets are spectacular, and in the night you can leave to the garden to contemplate the immense atlantic horizon, with the silent of the stars and a the light of fireflies will surprise you as a king of magic powder everywhere.
Claire's hospitality is lovely, she is there for anything you may need, if you want she shares with children the ecosystem she's made with hens and cultivations.
Thank you very much, we hope we'll come back!
