Welcome to Alfama & Sé (cathedral) apartment situated in the maze-like district that proudly bears the title of birthplace of Lisbon and still maintains many traditions, not least its role as fado heartland. For three thousand years the hillside of Alfama was occupied by Arabs, Romans and Visigoths but now can be occupied by you, in this charming and comfortable apartment. You'll feel like you're in your "home in Lisbon" and not in a house decorated to welcome tourists.
But do not think Alfama was lost in the past: an increasingly younger population has revitalize it. The proof of this is this apartment on the third floor of a building recently renewed and it is the ideal choice for those of you who want to discover the origins of Lisbon and at the same time stay in a quiet and safe area. It is fully furnished and receives enough sunlight.
2 bedrooms with double beds (one with a direct walkway to the kitchen)
Mobile cot (on request): +€14 nightly
1 living/dining room
Fully equipped kitchen
Towels and linen included
From the apartment, wander around Baixa (Lower Town), Lisbon’s heartbeat, take a tram to Belém for a custard tart or climb aboard the tram No 28 to Miradouro da Graça to avoid the uphill slog. All this is only a few steps away.
On June 12, Alfama remains one of the best neighborhoods to celebrate the Santos Populares (People’s saints), so, in this order – dress up in an outlandish costume, stuff your face with sardines, down a barrel of sangria and then, when you’re suitably inebriated, take a pot of basil, a paper carnation and the best love poem you can write (you had better make that two barrels of sangria) to your secret lover. I guarantee she (or he) will love you for it!
2 THINGS YOU CAN NOT MISS IN ALFAMA DISTRICT
1.Esplanada das Portas do Sol » one of the best views over the city, ideal to enjoy sitting in their many couches.
2.Museu do Fado » museum dedicated to the urban song of Lisbon, fado, Intangible Heritage of Humanity by Unesco in 2011.

Loved this apartment. The location is perfect, around the corner from the Cathedral, between Alfama and Baixa, walking distance from everything. It is large, clean and well equipped. One more great thing-a large bathroom with a tub. Hugo was a great host, provided a lot of information, responded to all of my questions quickly.
We had a wonderful time in Lisbon, and that was largely due to the apartment and its excellent location. Hugo, explained in detail what to do in Lisbon and was really helpful. Everything worked and we didn't have any noise from the streets. Metro is really near and easily accessible with a stroller. We spend most nights indoors as our daughter is only 8 months old. There are supermarkets nearby and also the restaurants were incredibly helpful with take away. I recommend the local culinary burger restaurant nearby.
Next time we're in Lisbon, we know where to go.
The apartment was nice and as described. But we were surprised by the neighborhood. There's an abandoned, collapsed building across the street, and the street and the immediate neighborhood around it is deserted at night. This can make it feel a little unsafe for women traveling alone. The apartment is also difficult to find for people who have never been there before. Hugo sent the address and instructions on how to catch a taxi from the airport, but didn't give specific directions or major cross streets or landmarks. Our taxi driver got lost, so what Hugo told us should have been a 15-20 minute, 5 euro taxi ride actually took over an hour and cost 20 euros. Once we got there, Hugo nicely carried our luggage up the stairs, gave us a map and a brief description of things in Lisbon he recommends.
Dear Vicky, thank you for your review. I would like to clarify some points, because I think your review isn't accurate. Alfama is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Lisbon and the building you refer isn't abandoned or collapsed, it's just an old building that is for sale. The fact that you din't see a lot of people on the street means that this neighborhood is mainly a residencial area, not a nightlife area as other neighborhoods in the city, like Bairro Alto. Neither the building or the fact that there isn't a lot of people on the street undermine the safety of the neighborhood; none of the guests that stayed there had any problem regarding security, as you yourself didn't either. Second, the apartment is only difficult to find if you don't read carefully the instructions I sent you, with map links and directions. If the taxi driver got lost, I'm sorry about it, but as you can understand it's not my fault and that isn't related to any absence of detailed information about the apartment's location, which I gave you. Third, I never told you the taxi ride would be €5; the distance the taxi made would never cost that amount, and if it took one hour to arrive you're forgetting to mention you arrived at 8pm, rush time in Lisbon. Have nice travels around.
