The Space

KIRPAL MEDITATION AND ECOLOGICAL CENTER (KMEC)

Find solace in this cozy screen cabin nestled in the Puna jungle, with a partial great ocean view, light trade winds, a lanai (deck), its own private bathroom, outdoor shower, and a comfortable Queen size bed. The newly constructed Full Ocean View Jungalow nestled in the Jungle and closer to the Community Kitchen is an upgrade to this wonderful Dragonfly cabin and I would recommend considering that as well before you decide.

Please note that the shared kitchen is about 800 feet away from this particular space, so you may want to drive back & forth through the orchard.

Our spacious and open ten acre property is surrounded by a buffer of Jungle and features 150+ trees with 30 or so kinds of tropical fruit. You're welcome to help yourself to the freshest fruit possible whenever they're ripe!

Swimming is half a mile away at Isaac Kepo'okalani Hale Park, one of the few safe places for swimming on this rugged, extremely scenic, coast.

A body-temperature warm-pond park is just a mile further, as well as excellent snorkeling in the large, wave-protected, Kapoho Tide Pools, with dozens of corals and thousands of brightly colored tropical fish.

The nearly constant lava-flow area is just half an hour to the West of us, and perfect for a sunset, or sunrise, hike where you'll often see a cascade of red-hot lava plunging 50 or 60 feet into the boiling ocean below. Truly awesome! A peak experience for most of our guests.

Shopping, a natural foods market, and delicious restaurants are 15 minutes away in Pahoa Town. Several large Farmer Markets operate on the weekends too.

Our Teak Meditation Pavilion was made in Bali and is, to us, a very holy and special place for prayer and reflection. We don't preach, or otherwise "reach out"...., it's simply there if you would like some peace and tranquility - which is, as most people tell us, our main product. :-)

  • Stephen was a great host, everything went smoothly. A shoutout to Lenny for pointing me in the right direction; great communication!

The Dragonfly Cabin is an awesome way to connect with nature and drop away from modernity without plunging into the stone age. Hot on demand shower, toilets, electricity to recharge your phone. Beyond that you're pretty much off the grid.

Nature completely immerses you; you sleep to the sounds of a rain forest flowing around you like a river. You wake up to the birds singing on a humid breeze. There's a meditation center a stone's toss away if you need a bit more sensory isolation to center yourself. Overall really mystical experience.

Two tips: mosquito repellent; my blood doesn't seem appealing to the buggers, so it's not a personal concern, but I did see quite a few at the beach nearby. It's the tropics! And the beach nearby is not a sand one, took a stroll down for a midnight swim....super rough, rocks on the shore, save the dipping for the daylight; Aloha!

  • The Dragonfly Cabin was a unique and wonderful experience. My wife and I especially enjoyed the chorus of frogs at night and the chirping of birds in the morning. Lots of good conversation with people who work at KMEC and a wide variety of fruit growing on the grounds. Stephen and the rest of the crew were doing some remodeling and landscaping and it was fun to see big changes happen in such a short time. Highly recommended.

  • The Dragonfly Cabin is a "one room" bungalow surrounded by lush nature and detached from any other buildings. The cabin is basically a fixed floor and roof with mosquito nets instead of walls. You can see, hear and smell the jungle, while the nets protect you from insects and other unwanted guests. Although the cabin is open to all sides, we felt shielded as plants and well placed covers protected our privacy.

We stayed two nights at the Dragonfly Cabin and loved it from the moment we arrived. We dropped our luggage, grabbed the camp chairs and just enjoyed the jungle feeling. Later, we slept like babies - the noisy frogs didn't really bother us. The outdoor shower with a view of the jungle and the ocean was breathtaking!

The people at the KMEC are just lovely! Everyone we met was super-friendly and helpful.

We would highly recommend the Dragonfly Cabin to everyone who is looking for nature and peace of mind. We calmed down from being stressed out New Yorkers to relaxed Hawaiians within a breath.

  • What a wonderful place! Why would you stay in any resort/hotel when you can stay in this beautiful cabin. Fantastic location, nets to keep bugs out, fresh oranges on the trees, the sound of rain falling on the canvas roof, and best of all a piping hot shower under the stars! This place is an experience you don't want to miss!

  • Peaceful Dragonfly, awesome place to stay! what a privilege! Admittedly outside the comfort zone of many--but if you're one of those, you probably haven't gotten as far as this review.
All the positive comments in previous guest reviews are accurate. The location is a simple drive from Hilo. Beyond Pahoa, the closer you get, the narrower the road, the more wondrous the trees and vines. Based on my experience, I recommend arriving in the morning to get oriented during daylight. While truly deep in the middle of nature, with only mesh screens separating you from the outside world, there's nothing rustic about the basic furnishings: comfortable bed, nightstand & lamp, small lanai, and simple, modern and clean bathroom with open-air shower. And just steps away, the meditation pavilion.
Maybe the most unforgettable part for me, the astonishing sounds of the jungle! Especially the amazing, nonstop, dusk-to-dawn chorus of coqui frogs (so near, yet you never see one!), providing a natural in-your-ear soundtrack, only broken by intermittent rain showers on the canvas roof. With sunrise, the nocturnal music is replaced by tropical birds and soothing ocean waves (only a short walk away). The first night, I had some misgivings about the frogs, but surrendered and probably never slept better, really! As a bonus, geckos are always nearby, and if you aren't already familiar with them, you will peacefully coexist and find them endearing. Only a few encounters with dragonflies, never less than cordial.
With only 3 days on the Big Island and so many places to explore, my time at KMEC was mostly limited to nighttime and early mornings. Otherwise, I would have enjoyed making use of the wonderful communal kitchen, a short ways up the trail by the cottages, as well as the spacious fruit orchard. Last but not least, the people I met briefly were all great, elevating the KMEC experience yet another notch.

  • We had an amazing stay at KMEC. I don't even know where to start. We were supposed to stay at the dragon fly tent, but were up graded to the Noni cabin, which was perfect because it had its own bathroom and kitchen. The property is beautiful with ocean views, fruit trees everywhere, walking distance to Isaac hales park, and amazing sounds at night. I have never slept that well in my life.

Bill is the perfect host. He loaned us snorkeling gear, told us the best spots to go. He loaned us a tent and sleeping bags and told us where we could swim with dolphins, which we did and it was fantastic. He was always available if there were any questions. Most importantly, he is just a really nice cool guy. The woofers there were also really great. They told us the best places to go and were super welcoming. All around Good people.

The location is perfect as well, Puna is an amazing place and KMEC is right in the middle if it. We will definitely make a stop here again in the near future

  • I spent two nights in this cabin in the middle of the rainforest. The setting is as remote and natural as it appears in the listing. Other reviews are correct - the sound of the frogs at night is pretty loud. I enjoyed the feeling of being out in the forest, but the frogs woke me up several times, and invaded my dreams, too. I also got a visit from what I suspect was a feral pig walking through the leaves at night, while I was showering in the outdoor shower (which I loved). This isn't a space for someone who doesn't like the outdoors, but for those of you who do (and are heavy sleepers), this is a great place to escape.

Leonard was an easygoing, jovial host. He has an amazing retreat center, and has clearly worked hard to create a meditative, relaxed place for travelers. He was mostly easy to contact, although I didn't receive the code for the gate and wasn't able to get into the property on the second night for a couple hours because he was unreachable. Make sure you ask for the code so you can get in!

  • Our stay at the Peaceful Dragonfly Cabin was exactly that -- peaceful. Everything is just as pictured. It was so nice to fall asleep to the sound of waves crashing. I love outdoor showers and the one at the cabin was excellent. Who doesn't love standing on smoothed lava rocks while showering in the Hawaiian forest? Len was a great host, though we spent most of our time out sightseeing. Everyone we met at the KMEC was nice and personable.

  • It was very easy to communicate with Len. We were arriving long after dark but he was willing to accommodate us. The Dragonfly Cabin was very comfortable and it was immensely relaxing going to sleep to the sound of the frogs. The rustic shower had all the hot water we needed for two of us to shower after a sticky day in Volcanoes National Park and the bathroom has a great view. Everything was very clean and comfortable. I appreciated the Buddha statues on the property. It was a treat to be able to stay there.

Kirpal Meditation and Ecological Center
About
Kirpal Meditation and Ecological Center is a half mile from the ocean on the eastern tip of the Big Island of Hawaii, approximately seven miles from the small village of Pahoa. The 10-acre ocean-view property is blessed with average daytime temperatures of 85° F year-round, and 65° F at night, with cool, fragrant trade winds, surrounding tropical flora, including old growth mangoes, nearby swimming, surfing and snorkeling. This property was once a papaya farm and is now newly planted with bamboo, papaya, palms, banana and many other fruit trees. The octagonal Balinese meditation pavilion is set among shade-trees with an expansive view of the ocean. The island wildlife is all around us – a variety of birds by day and at night there's the pleasant chirping of Coqui frogs – and there are no snakes. Natural wonders include Volcanoes National Park, for lava and crater viewing, volcanically heated warm ponds and steam vents (as outdoor saunas) and other wonders of the lush tropics. Kmec opened in the summer of 2008 for pre-arranged seasonal meditation retreats and private meditation-vacations on request. Additionally, we would like to extend our welcome to Big Island travelers offering cozy cottages and open air kitchen and bath.
