Comfortable and cosy, our ancient chalet in the middle of the mountains can accommodate up to 5 people. It is easily accessible by car, just 30 km from Ljubljana the capital. An ideal starting point for hiking or traveling around Slovenia.

The space

Perfect getaway house for somebody who wants to relax in the middle of nature. This chalet, on the footstep of the Slovenian capital Ljubljana, is situated in the very heart of the regional nature park “Polhograjski dolomiti”. Picturesque countryside dotted with lonely farmhouses and ancient villages, steep slopes and mountain peaks topped with churches is ideal for hiking, mountain biking or just quiet family holidays in the middle of nature. You might think that time has stopped here!

Only 30 km from Ljubljana, the house is accessible by car or by public bus twice a day.
Built in stone, this more than 300 years old chalet, can accommodate at maximum 6 people. There is master room with balcony, children room for two and an extra sofa bed in the living area. Kitchen is fully equipped (dish washer, oven, glass ceramic hob) but in nice weather you can also take advantage of totally equipped summer kitchen on the terrace stretching around the house.

At the neighbor farmhouse you can buy organic home produce like fresh milk, eggs, meat, vegetables and seasonally cheese and their home made charcuterie.

For more information what to do and explore in the area there is a guide in the chalet but do not hesitate to visit also web site of the local tourist association “Turisticna zveza Dolomiti” or simply “(URL HIDDEN)

Staying at Matevz's place was perfect. The location is stunning and very easily accessed from Ljubljana but also far enough away to know you are truly in the beautiful countryside. The house is so cosy and cute with amazing views of the hills. Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to meet Matevz but everything was fantastic and easy to find. I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to experience the beauty of Slovenia!

The "real" Slovenia. Although it's very close to the capital, Matevz's chalet feels like it's deep in the country. From the house, with the exception of the farm next door, we could see only rolling, forested hills with small churches at their crests. The bed is comfortable, the chalet is spotless. And the terrace and outdoor fireplace are very pleasant--a great place to watch the sunset. We used the chalet as home base for visits to Idrija, Skofja Loka, and (our favorite) the Franja Partisan Hospital near Cerkno. A bit of advice: don't rely blindly on your GPS. Cross-check with an old-school map. We found ourselves on some pretty tricky single-lane gravel tracks through the mountains.

In a lovely secluded area not yet discovered by Lonely Planet, Polhov Gradec - Smolnik región is truly beautiful, relaxed and serene. There are very few tourists in the region and people were willing to help us with lots of laughter, miming and of course confusion. Making it easier for us were the young locals who spoke English and able to tell us the history, directions and help us understand local foods. The Post and Telecommunications museum is really interesting - the anthropologist who is the tour guide there provided a lot of information re social and political history and tips about local producers. Exploring north towards Lake Bled via the narrow mountain roads and mining area of Kobra was fascinating and the chalet is only an hours drive from the centre of Ljubljana. The chalet was perfect. Lazy evenings sitting in the sun on the patio gazing at the wildflower meadows, listening to cows mooing (and braying donkeys), birds and crickets - the ultimate peaceful end to exploring days. Well equipped and clean, with comfortable bed and furnishings, the chalet is decorated with artefacts referencing the traditions of Slovenia as well as contemporary pieces. If we lived in Europe we would go back every summer. Maztec (the host) was easy to contact and sent directions and information prior to our arrival. The chalet is up windy roads and we did initially have difficulty finding it because our Car navigation system and Goggle maps were unable to locate "Smolnik" , and it was with the help of local farmers we found it. So when you go make sure you have details on hand. And the local Glostilna has great gypsy goulash! And the Grica restaurant at Sentjost is a delicious way to wile away a few hours drinking local wines and locally sourced foods.

Matevz house is perfect for those looking for a city break and to enjoy the nature. it's located on one of the many Slovenian mountains and although you do need to drive a bit to get there, it is SO worth it. We felt like we were on a fairy-tale, hearing the birds sing in the morning and having breakfast out on the terrace under the sun and looking at the amazing view of the valley. Matevz was very helpful, we didn't get the chance to meet him in person but his instructions to get to the house were so clear and he was very responsive to all our queries during our stay.

Beautiful chalet in the peaceful country location. You can see the sunrise from the terrace (and from the bed as well :) ) Absolutely recommended for relaxing, get away from the city and freshen up. Ideal for couples or for smaller family. Matevz is very helpful, informs you about everything, he placed useful info cards around the chalet just to make your stay more comfortable and easy. 5/5 :)
