Stylish & spacious guest suite in Amsterdam's most desirable neighbourhood. Central and convenient. Perfectly placed in easy walking distance of all the sights, shops, cafes and restaurants. Quiet and peaceful bedroom, large and light living room (can be used as second bedroom), luxurious and spacious bathroom, handy pantry. The house is national monument built in 1790, completely renovated in 2019. In the 1820s it was the home of Multatuli, Holland's most famous author.
The space
The house is a 'Rijksmonument' (national monument) dating from 1790 and has a rich history, reflected in the original beamed ceilings and narrow stairways yet has been fully renovated and now offers modern comfort and convenience in a superb location.
LAYOUT DESCRIPTION:
The Multatuli Guest Suite is located one flight up from the street level on the first floor (US second floor). The main entrance and staircase are shared with the hosts/owners but the guest suite is completely private. The entire first floor of the house is for your exclusive use.
The quiet and peaceful bedroom is located at the back of the house and can be made up with a king bed or with two twin beds. The comfortable mattresses, high thread count white bed linens, black out blinds and curtains ensure a restful sleep, whatever time zone you're coming from. Convenient luggage racks for your suitcases make it easy to unpack, or to access your things without having to unpack. There is also ample cupboard space and good reading lights. We offer USB charger points to charge your devices without converter plugs. A baby cot can be provided on request.
The light and spacious living room features three large windows overlooking the street. Relax after a busy day of sightseeing on the deep and comfortable sofa or sit back and admire the view of historic 17th century buildings from the iconic swinging egg chair. A sofa bed can be made up in the living room if two bedrooms are required. The living room features a stylish oak table and chairs - the perfect spot to enjoy a delicious breakfast from the local bakeries and markets. It is also a convenient place to catch up on emails or for business travellers to work. High speed internet is available along with a flat screen tv connected to chromecast so you can watch a film or your favourite shows streamed from your laptop or smartphone. You're welcome to help yourself to a book from the living library, or to donate one! We provide guidebooks on Amsterdam and maps and will give you the run down when you arrive to you can make the most of your stay in the city.
The small pantry next to the living room has appliances for you to prepare breakfast: fridge, Nespresso and filter coffee machines, a kettle and toaster. Coffee pods, tea and sugar are provided along with cutlery, crockery and glasses. Cooking facilities are not available but there are many excellent restaurants and cafes in the neighbourhood for you to sample (our favourites are listed in our Airbnb Guide Book and in the printed version you will find in the guest suite).
The large bathroom has underfloor heating, a comfortable freestanding egg bathtub and two showers including a rain shower. A hairdryer and luxurious toiletries are provided including shower gel, body lotion, shampoo and conditioner from Amsterdam-based company Marie-Stella-Maris - a Dutch lifestyle brand with a social mission: clean water for everyone, everywhere.
The guest suite is warm and cosy in winter and the room specific Tado heating controls allow you to easily adjust the temperature to your comfort. In summer it is easy to cool the rooms by opening the windows for a through draft and if necessary with the addition of the fans provided. There are only a few days when they are needed as Amsterdam has a temperate climate.
STAIRS:
The guest suite is located up one flight of stairs. The stairs are not suitable for people with limited mobility. In historic buildings in Amsterdam many of the staircases are steeper than some people are used to. When the houses in this area were built in the 17th century there was a tax on the width of the building resulting in tall houses with steep, narrow staircases. We can help you with your luggage (we recommend small suitcases if possible!).

We live in the rest of the house and share the entrance and staircase.
Other things to note
Rates include linen, weekly cleaning and linen change for stays of 10 nights or more, utilities and wifi internet.

Full of history, the house was built around 1790 and is a national monument. In the 1820s it was home to the young Multatuli, Holland's most famous author. You can visit the museum dedicated to him a few streets away in the house of his birth and the large statue of him on the Torensluis bridge on the Singel canal.
REVIEWS:
The layout of the house changed at the end of 2018 and the space we rent out from 2019 is completely renovated, smaller and on a different level. Reviews up to 2018 refer to the previous layout, reviews from 2019 are for the new layout. The house, location and hosts remain the same.

From little cafes and restaurants, a great bakery and an Italian coffee bar, to all kinds of traiteurs, shops and supermarkets. There are two weekly organic markets within 5 minutes walk (Wednesdays and Saturdays).
There’s a bike rental 2 minutes walk from the house. It’s just a short train ride from the airport (only 15 minutes) and the station is only 7 minutes walk from the apartment so it’s very quick to get here. Amsterdam is a small city and it’s very easy to get around on foot or by bike or of course by boat!

Joanna is from London and MP is from Amsterdam. We have a lot to thank travel and hospitality for. We fell in love at first sight when Joanna was visiting Amsterdam reviewing hotels and walked into the boutique hotel MP was running. The rest, as they say, is history. These days MP is a professional pianist and Joanna is distributor of Micro scooters for the Netherlands and has a store across the street from the house. In 2006 we bought our house from an old lady who had lived in it for 38 years. We have completely renovated it and now live here very happily with our two daughters. We love to travel, we love music and we love good food. We also really love Amsterdam! We can tip you off about local hangouts that you have to live here to know about and all the highlights that you really ought to see whilst you're here. This is the best area of the city to live in, that's why we picked it. Everything we need is right on our doorstep, we hardly ever have to leave our 'hood. You'll love it here too!
