You will have exclusive use of this Lodge. No other guests.
We have built a luxury lodge with irori and log stove.
Enjoy a beautiful architectural space decorated with a fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian style. Take in views from the balcony, or curl up on the sofa in front of the log stove. The Lodge is decorated with local artisans work. Soak in the ambience of 444 years at our Buddhist temple.
Surrounded by stunning scenery you can explore Mt Aso area and Takachiho.

The space
You will be the only guests!

Private Western-style toilet, custom-made spa bathroom with shower and hot running water. Washing machine, dryer. Kitchen with refrigerator, gas hob, microwave, rice cooker, toaster oven and kettle. Please feel free to prepare your own food.

Breathtaking scenery, mountains, forests, terraced rice paddis. Spectacular gorge with rowing boats, famous Shinto shrines and yokagura dancing. Great local food and shochu!

This is a family-run temple.
Guests are expected to be respectful of our family and our facilities. Also, as we are a public place with temple visitors on a daily basis, we like our staying guests to be properly dressed. (Not too much flesh showing, thank you!)

Please note that this is, as I state above, a family-run temple with visitors on a daily basis. This is a fully working temple.

We do NOT offer Zen-style retreats!

This is a Pure Land temple, run by our family for 17 generations. There is hustle and bustle and lots to observe and to enjoy.

Takachiho, Miyazaki-ken, Japan

Breathtaking scenery, mountains, forests, terraced rice paddis. Spectacular gorge with rowing boats, famous Shinto shrines and yokagura dancing. Great local food and shochu!
Please note....I live in the middle of paddi fields. It will take you 40 minutes to walk to the nearest shop. Please do any necessary shopping in Takachiho town centre before heading to the temple. I drive in and out of the town centre several times a day so, when possible, we will give you a ride.

My work: Shonenji Temple, Takachiho, JET Programme
Speaks English and Japanese
I' m a British woman who has lived here in Takachiho, Japan for 30 years. I am a Pure Land Buddhist priest and I am married to the 17th generation head priest of Shonenji Temple. We run our busy temple, teach in the community and have three grownup children and two grandchildren. We love hosting, talking, cooking, eating, drinking and socialising. We are not vegetarian and we enjoy drinking alcohol. We have hosted many guests from all over the world over the years but 2015 marks our debut with Airbnb. We are a Pure Land Buddhist temple so we do not offer zazen but we do encourage our guests to take part in our chanting services.
