We are located at the foothills of The Miravalles Volcano, an andesitic stratovolcano in Costa Rica. The caldera was formed during several major explosive eruptions that produced voluminous dacitic-rhyolitic pyroclastic flows between about 1.5 and 0.6 million years ago. The only reported historical eruptive activity was a small steam explosion on the SW flank in 1946. High heat flow remains, and Miravalles is the site of the largest developed geothermal field in Costa Rica.
MIRAVALLES - A SLEEPING GIANT
Miravalles has been sleeping for centuries, no explosions, no geysers or other good volcanic stuff, except for a small steam explosion in 1946. However, if you have a four-wheel drive vehicle, you would find the trip worth taking. The road passes through beautiful country and offers super views of Lake Nicaragua. The area around the volcano, the Miravalles Forest Reserve, is home to cloud and moist forests filled with rivers, waterfalls, hot springs and innumerable plant and animal species. Costa Rica’s only geothermal power plant is at the foot of the Miravalles Volcano. Now the Region also has a huge Wind Farm developed by the Germans and a Solar Plant developed by the Chinese.
LOCATED IN THE PROVINCE OF GUANACASTE
Our spectacular Ailanto Mountain Reserve is located in La Fortuna de Bagaces, 21 miles outside of Liberia in an east-southeast direction; the Guanacaste province has a hot, dry climate plus beautiful pale sand beaches. We are at 1969 ft (600m) above sea level thus our climate is more tempered and spring like.
We are surrounded by 28,840 acres of pristine forest (10,850 hectares) and land that is the Miravalles National Park.
HOME TO NATURAL AND ARCHEOLOGICAL TREASURES
Miravalles Protected zone includes the edifice of the Miravalles Volcano, which has no record of activity, and the very well conserved moist forests, very moist forests and cloud forests covering its lower slopes. The Miravalles is a very complex stratovolcano 2,028 m high with six eruption points at its peak. On its western and southwestern flanks there are lava flows. At the foot, in the southwestern part, in Las Hornillas, which is accessible by the paved road from our place you can see interesting examples of hydro-thermal activity. Some of the oldest Pre-Hispanic archaeological remains in the country have been found in this area. Needless to say we are in the midst of a highly desired tourism area and we would love to share it with you
Thermal waters, hiking trails, spa, exercise in the Jungle, tours, floara and fauna.
We will treat you like our family, come and fell our welcoming. We appreciate you being here. Join us in the Living Room for Internet and to share your experiences with the other guests. Ask anything about Costa Rica, chances are that we know the answer to your question
I did not stay at BriBri as it was far below my expectations. The floors in the cabin where I was to stay had just been treated with a product which gave off noxious fumes. My overall feeling of the place was that it was dirty. The owner called it rustic. Had one been paying $15 per night and viewed it as camping, I would agree. I have never walked away from a place due to condition, this is a first. I was told my money would not be refunded. I didn't care at this point. I must say that the owner was very helpful in finding me a new place to stay. I must also note that I paid him for his "taxi" services, $50 to get there and $40 to get to a new hotel. Also, one has to have a car. Nothing is in walking distance.
We didn't stay long, so don't have a full review. My impression was that the rustic habitation had potential, but wasn't quite ready. There were issues with the bathroom plumbing and the toilet's separation from the head of the bed. In a brief conversation with Dr Hugo, he indicated that he intended to do something about it, which future reviews might reflect. I met one of the staff, Jonathan, who seemed courteous and willing to help.
Dr Hugo was very friendly and a pleasure to talk to. The beds were clean and the pictures accurately show what the place is like. The price was also great. We unfortunately had to catch our flight and couldn't join the others to a nearby waterfall.
Site is very close to Miravelles volcano and sulfur pools. There are warm geothermal pools in the property and 3 of them are hidden all the way at the back so you have to take 5 minute walk to see it. It is absolutely beautiful two small and one large pool surrounded by jungle, huge old trees and full of blue monarch butterflies. If you lucky enough you can see the monkey and toucans as well.
We had a rocky beginning since we couldn't find property during the late evening, However the rest of our stay was very pleasant. Dr. Hugo and Sonia took a great care of us and made us feel really welcome.
Dr. Hugo is a gracious host and extremely knowledgeable about Costa Rica. Ailanto was beautiful, secure, and lovely end to our Guanacaste trip!
Speaking for Mark and myself, I’d like to express our gratitude for the hospitality we experienced while staying at your property. Before we left for our trip to Costa Rica, it would have been hard for anyone to convince me that of all places we visited, Arenal, Tamarindo, Manuel Antonio, etc, your piece of paradise, tucked away in the center of Costa Rica, would be the most pleasant experience of our trip. Yet, after nearly 2 weeks removed
from our adventures, we still find ourselves thinking about our time with Jose and Gerty the most. They truly were great hosts and welcomed us into their care as if we were long lost family. It was with them that Mark and I experienced the true riches that Costa Rica had to offer. Their hospitality and assistance were the highlights of our vacation and left a lasting impression on us and how lucky we felt to be able to meet these two wonderful
people. Should we ever get the chance to come visit Costa Rica, visiting your home will be a priority for us and we hope we will be lucky enough to meet our wonderful new friends again.

The space here is beautiful - nestled in the jungle. There is natural hot springs within a short hike and Hugo is very accommodating. We had some difficulty finding the place from Fortuna but hitched a ride with some locals - if you go around asking for Dr Hugo someone is bound to know him/how to get there. We had difficulty reaching him by phone during our adventure there but once we made it felt right at home. He cooked us dinner and there was a movie playing in an outdoor theatre he has set up. Unfortunately we only stayed one night and couldn't hike the volcano but next time will stay longer. He even drove us to the bus the next morning and bought us coffee. My only advice is make yourself a detailed map to get there!
Be in no doubt that to stay on Hugo's ranch one is one step away from being in the total wilderness. The Bri Bri house is a comfortable cabin in the forest with rustic charm. Do not expect uber-luxury or 'all the mod cons' but if you are wanting to get away from it all and step straight into the real natural environment then this is prefect.
Jumping into the Ranch's spring feed water pools at dusk or first thing in the morning is sublime. Alternativity walking up the track to the Volcanic hot pools and mud baths is the best way to wile away a few hours of anyone's day.
Hugo is a great host, always on hand to give advice, and to take one to explore the surrounding environs. His four trusting dogs soon become friends when one wants to walk the forest: constantly darting in and out of the growth their companionship was welcomed.
Charming host, Hugo, will ensure all your needs are met for a comfortable and fun-filled stay. Ailanto is for nature lovers - modest accommodations in natural, ecological surroundings of volcanoes, fumaroles, bubbly mud pools, exotic birds and animals. A quiet place to relax and hear yourself think, or go on a nature hike, smear on volcanic mud, dip in the thermal pools, or do nothing but gaze at the splendor of nature.
