ITAEWON : The Global Community in Seoul: Global Fashions and Foods
Itaewon is a unique place in Seoul where one can meet people of diverse nationalities and cultures. There is a popular joke saying that international residents may not know Seoul, but they know Itaewon. Seoul even designated Itaewon as its first ‘Special Tourism District,’ to highlight it as a destination for internationals to enjoy a diversity of culture, shopping, and entertainment experiences.
Itaewon is in the middle of Yongsan-gu, which borders the northern part of the Hangang River. It is also close to Seoul Station, Myeong-dong, and Namsan Mountain. The formation of this exotic and global tourism site is closely associated with modern Korean history.
In the aftermath of the Korean War, American soldiers began to stay in the Yongsan Garrison and, consequently, numerous businesses and housing complexes were formed in Yongsan. In preparation for international meetings, the Seoul Asian and Olympic Games, the government strengthened tourism infrastructures and revitalized commerce, prompting international tourists from other parts of the world (such as Japan, Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East, etc.) to visit Itaewon.
Itaewon typically refers to the street full of stores, restaurants, and stalls over 1.4 kilometers between Itaewon 1-dong and Hannam 2-dong in the east. Fashion shops specialize in various imported clothes, leather goods, fur goods, handbags, shoes, and antique furniture. Big and tall sizes unavailable in other areas are well-stocked, and experienced tailors offer customized clothes.
Another one of Itaewon’s many draws is its diverse food culture, which features cuisine from around world. Restaurants right behind Hamilton Hotel form a type of exhibition hall for international foods from Korea, New York, London, India, Thailand, China, Greece, Pakistan, Italy, France, Mexico, Australia, and more. Unique flavors, exotic interiors, and diverse nationalities help to make Itaewon befittingly ‘the global village in Seoul.’

This accommodation was marvellous. The spring was specially cold this year and my friends and I were specially thankful for the heated apartment. Besides the ample amenities, Youngjin and his family were specially helpful during our stay - be it helping out with our laundry or helping us make reservations at restaurants. If I were to return to Seoul, I would definitely choose this location again.
We stayed there 1 month and it was great. Great place and owners. Always there to help. Clean place with lot of facilities. Nice neighborhood we plenty of restaurants, clubs.
A place we recommend !
My sister and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Youngjin's apartment. As a host, Youngjin was friendly and helpful, and was always prompt in his response to any questions that we asked of him. His family, who were overseeing check-in/check-out while Youngjin was out of town on business, were also delightful - they left a thank-you note on our backpacks the day that we left. The apartment itself was perfect for us - clean, quiet, warm, easy to find, and within short walking distance to the subway and many restaurants. If you're looking for affordable accommodation in a great location, we would definitely recommend staying at Youngjin's apartment.
The location is great, in the center of Itaewon. Easy access via bus/subway from the airport. The room is nice and bed comfortable. I had the opportunity to meet and chat with Youngjin. He was friendly and energetic. I enjoyed my stay for 2 days in his place and Itaewon.
A very nice place, great location, super super clean and great facilities! I stayed 20 days and had a great stay. It's very close to the station, in an interesting neighborhood. The heating floor is amazing, especially in the bathroom! The appartment is a bit up a hill, so get ready to climb a bit (as everywhere in Seoul), but at least you don't hear any noise from the neighborhood! The facilities (Wi-Fi, laundry, etc.) are working perfectly and free! There is even shampoo and soap for free. They gave us an extra blanket when we needed it and Youngjin always responded quickly and efficiently to any e-mail we were sending him.
Some little things though: There is no living room, which is not a problem for me, but I think it should be said. There is only a kitchen.
Another problem is that the room is a bit small. I managed to live 20 days there, but there is no place to put your clothes, which is annoying. The other room in appartment 203 is quite big though.
Also, the blinds/curtains are white, so they don't really cover the light, but maybe they will change them.
Lastly, Youngjin Family is very kind, but sometime they come into the appartment, mainly to check the empty rooms or to do some laundry. They NEVER enter your room, but you should not be surprised if you see his grandmother in the kitchen (never for long). It did not really bother me, but I was just a bit surprised at first.
Anyway, I really recommand this place, especially for a short stay. For a longer stay, maybe take the other room, as it's bigger. But the appartment is really good.
A little tip: if you check-in, ask directly for the heating floor to be up a bit, you can always ask them to lower it afterwards.
Same comment than previously - had a very good stay!
Youngjin and his family were very welcoming and hospitable. The house was clean, well maintained, and quiet despite being in a busy tourist neighbourhood of Seoul. We enjoyed our stay very much!
We had a great stay at the Youngjin's guest house: it is 5 min walk from the metro station, very clean and cosy! As there is a slope to arrive, we had to do a little sport, but nothing big.
Youngjin was very helpful and reactive. We hadn't the chance to meet him, but his grandparents were there and are very nice. I'd definitely come back again!
Youngjin's place is great. We never met him, but were helped by his grandparents and his father. All were extremely sweet and the grandparents tried to be as helpful to us as possible even with a language barrier. We accidently lost our keys one day and his grandparents were kind and seemed to be understanding in the matter, like it was no big deal. Once we got Youngjin on the phone, he also was 100% understanding and chill about it. We offered to pay to replace the key, but he said don't even worry about it. This really is a great family.
The place is older, but very clean and kept up. The extra amenities like stove, fridge, wi-fi, tv, washer, and air con are nice - everything works well. The grandparents also gave us a giant bottle of drinking water upon arrival.
Close to the metro. Lots of expats/english speakers in the area. Great restaurants around and there's a convenience store a minute away.
Youngjin unfortunately wasn't around during our stay however we did meet his dad who showed us around the place.
The room is simply a short walk to the main party scene at Itaewon. We lucked out because there was this 2-day global food and music festival on the main street at Itaewon when we were there.
The room is quite private and there's a shared kitchen and toilet area with the room next door. There's enough amenities to stay for a longer period while cook your own food. Which is great.
