About This Listing
This old house has character. It has been filled with love, music and lots of good people. On the edge of the city, in a little corner within walking distance from stores, post office & hospital. 15-minute walk to Lake St Clair. Large kitchen!
I love meeting new people. I've traveled quite a bit myself. I own this old house in Detroit. My sons are living out of state. I have two adjoined spare bedrooms.
I could arrange to stay at my sweetie's place and make my bedroom available [note: this is something we would have to arrange ahead of time. I would charge more for this.]
I also have two comfortable sofas and an inflatable double air mattress. So really up to 6 people could stay.
Parking no problem. Sometimes I could even provide transportation. [For a fee. But cheaper than a taxi!]
I'm happy to give you ideas of places to get food, etc.
Walk or bike to post office, coffee shops, bagel shops, restaurants, and Lake St Clair.
15-20 minute drive to downtown Detroit.
I'm fluent in Spanish. I love kids of all ages.
One dog welcome.
I've lived and worked in Detroit for over 40 years. I know it really well.
Note: For stays of at least 2 months, monthly price would be lower.
Feel free to use my kitchen along with staples (cooking oil, spices, sugar, etc). Provide your own food. Store it in my refrigerator and cupboard.
Sheets, blankets, pillows, towels provided if needed.
Interaction with Guests
Sometimes I'm busy or tired and don't interact much. Sometimes I have time, and am happy to share a meal or coffee, or even take guests to my favorite places.
Unfortunately there is very little public transportation in Detroit. Our bus system is difficult to depend on. You're better off renting a car or looking into Uber.
Taxis are very expensive. When I have time, I'm happy to help with rides (for a fee) (cheaper than a taxi).
Other Things to Note
Detroit is an interesting mix of creativity, resilience, poverty, struggle, grit, and good people just trying to live a decent life. Please don't come here to brag to your friends. We have a complicated history.
Quiet at night. No smoking in house (or near open window/door if you smoke outside). Clean up after yourself (in kitchen and bathroom). No hard drugs. One dog welcome. [Note: if you eat in the bedroom, please be careful not to spill on the bedspread, etc]
We had a great stay at Julie's place. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Julie was very friendly and we felt like home at her place. I would prefer her place whenever I revisit Detroit.
House is in a great location for exploring Grosse Pointe and Lake St. Clair area. The house is indeed an old farm house. The pleasant surprise was learning the house had been part of Kerby farm. My wife is a direct descendant of the Kerby family that founded Grosse Pointe.
Julie was a great hostess, even though we hardly saw her. We had a busy day and had a place to crash, it was better than staying in a hotel.
Julie was extremely accommodating and flexible! Due to a work conflict, I ultimately couldn't accompany my girlfriend on the trip and Julie was great about hosting her alone.
My son and I had a wonderful time staying at Julie's house. She was at the house when we arrived and was super helpful with getting us oriented to Detroit. She had lots of suggestions for cool things to see and do and directions on how to get there. The house was very homey and welcoming and we were very comfortable with our sleeping arrangements. I especially liked how there are two adjoining rooms so we had plenty of space to spread out.
Julie lives in a quiet neighborhood that felt very friendly and wasn't too far from downtown. We were able to drive in and access downtown Detroit in about 15 minutes. Her house is also quite close to the lake and some other interesting and beautiful parts of the city.
I would definitely recommend staying with Julie. She is a very cool woman who takes great pride in her house and her city. It was a pleasure staying there and I would love to stay there again on my next visit to Detroit!
Lovely little house, very friendly hostess, good neighborhood close to lake and to grosse pointe, a rich suburb. 15-20 mins from downtown.
About the Host, Julie
