About This Listing
Fall asleep to the sound of the Pacific Ocean waves after watching seals, otters, countless bird species, sunsets and even an occasional spouting whale from the hot tub. This is the downstairs only (2 bedrooms and 2 baths) of our beautiful, light, and spacious home which has an open floor plan and lots of natural stone and wood. It is in a stunning location where the Mad River meets the Pacific Ocean, between Arcata and Trinidad. Our home is on an acre of land, with the western boundary being the middle of the Mad River. Bring your paddle boards, kayaks, and canoes; or just enjoy a picnic in the yard by the river. Walking/riding trails and beach access are within a few steps or pedals. Easy freeway access and close to all amenities. Less than 10 minutes from Humboldt State University and Mad River Hospital. Ten minutes to Blue Lake Casino and Cherae Heights Casino. Five minutes to Beau Pre Golf Course and ten minutes to ocean fishing (clams, crabs, salmon, bottom fish, etc.). Jeff even fly fishes for steelhead behind the house in the fall! This is truly a special place in the heart of redwood country! Sleeps up to 10, entertaining up to 14 total (including those staying at the house). Our kids have moved on, so you can move in! The house was very clean and had most of the essentials needed for cooking like salt and oils. It also had coffee with sugar ready to use.
Our time in McKinleyville at what we affectionately referred to as the "Beach House" was fabulous. The home is lovely...very nicely appointed while feeling absolutely comfortable even for a trip with active children. The view is spectacular and the neighborhood quiet with a couple of trailheads within the block. Diane and Jeff were gracious and as helpful as one could want. We will definitely return to this perfectly delightful place by the sea!
Wonderful experience. thank you for sharing your beautiful home. I love cooking in your kitchen with an ocean view, just beautiful. If my daughter decides to go to HSU, I'd love to stay at your place when I visit her.
McKinleyville was a perfect place to stay for our redwood adventures at prairie creek state park. I liked the chill feel of being here versus Arcata or Eureka. The house is nice and offers a comfortable bed with an epic view of the ocean. Diane was very prompt in answering my initial questions and she had a binder full of q&a's. A big perk about this place is the very hot, hot tub. After hiking all day, it was extremely helpful as it was the hottest hot tub that I've experienced. One issue is, is that it's really not ocean front as there is the Mad river in between. We considered passing it but it seemed like more work than we have liked. Overall it was a good fit for us and I hope it is for you as well :)
Diane is a wonderful host. She was very welcoming and helpful with restaurant and hiking recommendations. Her home is beautiful, and you awake to spectacular view of the ocean. I strongly recommend this home.
What can I say, we loved our stay. Diane provided clear instructions and had everything set to go when we arrived. We loved ocean view with the grey mornings, the bright afternoons and, from the hot tub on the deck when the sun dropped lower. My husband loves to cook and the kitchen suited him well. It wasn't far from Arcata or Eureka and we visited them both to try beer, tour the bay and enjoy the local restaurants. It was just great.
We had a very good experience all around. The host, Diane, was in close contact with us from the beginning, answering all our questions right away. The house was beautiful and immaculate, the kitchen was well-appointed, and the view was spectacular. It was very quiet at night and we slept really well. The nearby towns of Arcata and Eureka had a lot of cute shops and Arcata had a great farmer's market on Saturday morning. I would recommend this place for a tranquil, beautiful getaway - once you enter the house, you leave the rest of the world behind.
