Description

The space

Great Asby Old Rectory
Planning a family get-together? Friends reunited? Need plenty of space plus lots of peace and quiet?

Great Asby Old Rectory could be the ideal venue for your weekend break from life’s stresses and strains. It's a detached large family house set in a tranquil village in the lovely unspoilt Eden Valley.

A Grade 2* listed building, the Old Rectory is built round a 14th century Pele Tower, designed to withstand the Border Raiders. Whilst still retaining its original architectural features it has been sensitively modernised to provide 6 bedrooms, large kitchen, tv lounge, elegant drawing room and a sensational 650 year-old barrel-vaulted dining room. Above this is a snooker room with a Tudor fireplace and a full size snooker table. The tv lounge has Sky Sports and 500 books, and can access the internet via wifi.

There’s a lawn/play space to the front, plus off-road parking in a gated drive.

Great Asby is a peaceful village in England's unspoilt Eden Valley midway between the English Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.

The village has a pub, a church, two chapels, a small primary school, a playground, Asby Beck, St Helen’s Well, Asby Hall, the Alms Houses, and a picturesque sprawl of cottages and farms. If you fancy a break from self-catering there's a range of restaurants and takeaways in Appleby, the historic county town of Westmorland, just 6 miles away. Some neighbouring villages have good pub restaurants.

Walks from the village take you to the renowned Great Asby Scar limestone pavements (a must for geologists and botanists), Rutter Falls, Gaythorne Hall and Goodlie Hill. Priests Lane, starting at the Old Rectory, takes you over peaceful picturesque fields to Sunbiggin Tarn and Little Asby via a network of recognised footpaths.

By road, Kendal & the South Lakes, Kirkby Stephen & the Dales, Appleby & the spectacular Settle-Carlisle railway, and Penrith & the North Lakes are all within easy reach. Yet Great Asby isn’t en route to anywhere, so there’s little traffic through the village.

We "reserve" the house for 6 or 7 weeks a year for our own family get-togethers because we know it's a great venue, and
we think you’ll like the house and the village as much as we do!

You have 6 rooms to spread out in:
Hall with open fire,
Drawing room with piano and open fire.
TV lounge/library with open fire.
Family dining room, seating 12.
Family kitchen, seating 12.
Snooker room

You can choose whether or not to light the open fires - those rooms are also centrally heated.

The fully-equipped kitchen has an oil-fired Rayburn, electric cooker, microwave, dishwasher, large fridge, separate large freezer, washing machine. And all the pots & pans you might need for party cooking.

Also downstairs is a Shower room and WC with washbasin.

First floor
1 double bedroom with 4-poster and ensuite shower.
1 double bedroom with ensuite bath.
2 double bedrooms with washbasin.
1 twin bedroom with washbasin.
1 double bedroom.
Family bathroom.
Snooker room.

A cot, high chair and stairgate can be provided by prior arrangement.

"This was a wonderful house for our family reunion - perfect size, comfortable and beautiful. Thanks for everything!" (The K. Family, New York.)

"Lovely large, comfortable house, perfect for large groups or families. Snooker room was a great bonus! Kitchen & dining room were great, everybody could fit in comfortably. Great location, easy to get to various areas in the Lakes. We all had a lovely time. Thank you very much." (The D family birthday get-together.])

Although this is a large detached house we do have neighbours and we want to remain neighbourly. So we do ask that there should be no outside partying (or noise outside the house) after 10pm. Thanks.

Fantastic! We had an amazing weekend and look forward to coming back. The only thing we had to bring was food. Everything you could possibly need was provided. There were even lovely gold charger plates perfect for our celebration. The bedrooms easily accommodated 12 with 2 ensuites. The situation of Great Asby is idyllic and a short drive away from 100's of interesting things to do. I could go on but this place is well worth a visit for a large group wanting to spend some quality time together. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this Mark and we're so pleased your special family get-together was successful. We sometimes take the peace and quiet of Great Asby and the Eden Valley a bit for granted - until we go away to enjoy the buzz of other places (the club scene within 10 miles of the Rectory isn't too hot) and then come back home again! Thanks for leaving the house so extremely tidy. We hope to see you again. All the best, Jackie and Peter.

We stayed at The Old Rectory in celebration of my Mother-In-Law's 70th birthday. The house really is fantastic;a secluded delight that the pictures really don't do justice of. Jackie & Peter were fabulous hosts;so warm and welcoming and always on hand for extra help. The homely feel of the place really is a rarity with a thoughtful welcome package and the fluffiest, whitest towels we've ever encountered The dining room was the perfect setting to host a dinner party (the kitchen is fabuloudly appointed with everything we needed for food preperations) and the open fires kept us cosy into the early hours. The children had a great time playing hide and seek in the spacious interior and we all enjoyed exploring the surroundings on a big family walk (suitable for all abilities). We are now looking for an excuse to return!

Response from Jackie:
Caroline, we're delighted you enjoyed your special family get-together, and thank you for telling others about it! We think the Old Rectory is very special, not just for its family atmosphere but also because having as many 'living' rooms as bedrooms (6 of each) gives everyone space to spread out; your reference to hide and seek takes us back to our own children's parties 30 years ago. We hope you'll be back and see some more of the lovely unspoilt Eden Valley! Kind regards, Jackie and Peter.

Fantastic place, fantastic hosts. If anything the pictures don't do it justice. The bedrooms were large and very comfortable, the living areas with the open fires were ideal for relaxing, chatting and playing board games, and we spent every evening enjoying ourselves in the incredible dining room. For a reunion with a group of friends it was simply perfect. Jackie and Peter were incredibly welcoming and made sure we wanted for nothing. Thank you very much for allowing us to stay, we would love to return!

We had a lovely stay in Great Asby, the house was perfect for our whole family. We loved all the space this house provided, the open fires, and the snooker table. Communication before our stay was also excellent. We hope to return!

This property was stunningly beautiful. Framed by rolling, green countryside, the Rectory is set in an idyllic rural village. We really enjoyed our stay. The house was perfect for the 40th anniversary weekend away with all of our family. The property was extremely clean, each room was tastefully decorated, the house was thoughtfully equipped (including bedside torches for the dark nights). Jackie and Peter were wonderful hosts. They were approachable, accommodating, helpful and very friendly. We simply cannot fault the Rectory. We're already planning our return visit.

Response from Jackie:
Stephen, Thank you for this. We aim to make this a special location for special get-togethers. We're delighted that your family Ruby Wedding anniversary went so well and if the Rectory contributed to that then that's brilliant! You were perfect guests and we look forward to welcoming you again. Jackie and Peter.

A fantastic large house that made our ten year university reunion very special. Fantastic hosts and great communication. Loads of social spaces, so many we often lost people!

Response from Jackie:
Thank you Helen and we're really pleased you enjoyed your stay. You're right - we think space 'downstairs' when choosing a holiday house is just as important as the number of bedrooms. We're lucky that the Old Rectory has 5 rooms downstairs (including a choice of living kitchen or historic dining room for all 12 guests to eat together), plus the snooker room upstairs. Best wishes and we hope you may visit again, Jackie and Peter.

We're Jackie and Peter Lambert. We bought the Rectory from the Church in 1982 because it offered us the space to bring up our children in the quiet security of a Cumbrian village. Thirty years later, rather than leave our much loved family home and a brilliant village, we've recently moved into a tiny detached barn conversion behind the Rectory. We "reserve" it for 6 or 7 weeks a year for our own family get-togethers, so we can spread out and remember what it's like to stay there!

We've had many an extended family get-together and lots of village parties in the Rectory - and it's ideal for that. Yet with three good-sized reception rooms (plus family kitchen) on the ground floor, plus the snooker room upstairs, there's space for a house-party to spread out comfortably. Its 650 years of history and its architectural features (some of which we uncovered) make it a unique and fascinating place to stay.

We think you'll enjoy the house and the village as much as we do!
