I shared the Zilker Prairie House with Robin and James for three weeks (!) during a short internship and had a wonderful stay. The house is filled with character, wonderfully decorated, and has a warm, cozy feeling that made me feel comfortable rather than stranded in an unfamiliar city. The room is spacious and inviting and the bed is very comfortable. I also appreciated the huge jug of filtered water and the snacks that Robin puts out for guests. I slept well every night here; it's a quiet house in a quiet neighborhood. The room has locks on the doors and felt private.
Robin and James were tremendously friendly and hospitable to me throughout my stay. They consistently went out of their way to make sure that I was comfortable and having fun in Austin. Robin put out a healthy and satisfying breakfast every morning, even setting the coffee maker on a timer for me on one morning when she had to be out of town. They were very respectful of my privacy, and also very accommodating of the two guests that I had visiting me on two separate weekends while I was here.
The area itself (Travis Heights/South Congress) is trendy, safe, and surprisingly pedestrian-friendly. The house is a very short walk from South Congress Ave., which is lined with great shops, restaurants, and some of the best food trailers in Austin. It's also no more than a 10-15 minute walk from South First Street, which has more of the same but a bit more of a hipster feel. These two streets alone are more than enough for a great weekend in Austin, but it's also easy to get from this area to downtown or the University of Texas by bus, car, or foot, which I did several times a week without issue.
You'll have the company of two adorable dogs and a cat while you're here. Note that the cat generally spends her time on the porch or outside, so if you have cat allergies (like me), it isn't likely to be a factor. I look forward to staying at the ZPH again the next time I'm in Austin.
The location was great and the room is as pictured (except there is now a TV on the dresser). We needed a late check in and Robin was very accommodating. The bed was very comfortable and the towels were fresh. The off-street parking was appreciated and the cable TV selection and the wifi was adequate.
What was missing?
This guest rooms shares a door with another tenant (not the owner). The door neither locks nor is well insulated for noise. My husband and I felt as thought this other tenant could hear everything in our room and we could here his every move. He coughed through the first night and chanted through the next morning. He may also have night terrors ... or he screams out in the night on purpose.
The room is not private. There is no way to lock the 2 doors in the room. While we were gone, our room was entered into at least 2 times during our week long stay. This made us feel very uncomfortable.
There is very little storage available to the renters. Two drawers and no closets.
The art on the shelves was beautiful but it would have been better to use as space for our stuff.
The room needs more hooks to hang towels etc.
Nice breakfast. Two dogs and one cat. Friendly.
Shower was poor; no pressure at all. Bathroom was shared, or at least seemed so.
Everything was ready when we arrived, and the hosts were very easy to deal with. We needed to make a small change to our reservation and it was no trouble at all.
Robin and James created a setting that was very 'home away from home,' making me feel very welcome in their lovely Victorian home. Fresh coffee and fruit was served each day as were greetings from the two doggies. Having a bathroom to myself next door helped to get to my conference on time each day, and the location was perfect for catching the bus or calling a cab to go downtown. There are also many shops and restaurants within walking distance. I would highly recommend for anyone coming to Austin.
This historic home is lovely inside and out. It is also perfectly located for those who want an authentic Austin experience, within 5-7 minutes walking distance of Congress Avenue with quintessential shopping, music and dining. It is a true find. The room has its own television, radio and the home has outdoor patio and beautiful grounds. The dogs are friendly and there is even a piano for those who are musically inclined. Thank you for going out of your way, being warm, generous, gracious and for helping to make my stay in Austin truly memorable.
I loved staying at the Zilker Prairie House and was very grateful to Robin and James for all of their efforts to make my stay comfortable and happy. The room is beautiful and homely and full of soul. The breakfasts were healthy and substantial and I also appreciated the snacks and mineral water. The house is in a pretty and quiet street just off one of the best places to eat and shop in Austin - South Congress. I was based at the University of Texas during my stay and transport to the university - as well as to downtown and to the airport - is very easily accessible from The Zilker Prairie House. Above all, it was inspiring to meet Robin and James and to get to know their lovely neighbourhood. I'd go back and stay at ZPH in a heartbeat!
Robin and James were an absolute delight to stay with. This was our first stay with airbnb hosts and they both made us feel very much at home. We stayed almost a month and visited a lot of places around Austin and the location of the Prairie House just off of South Congress is the pick of them all. Their home is beautiful with that extra bit of artistic flair and bucket loads of character and, we were incredibly comfortable in the lovely bedroom they offer. The breakfasts were very generous and we appreciated the constant supply of spring water and other treats left for us. We have stayed in quite a few cities around the world and Austin has a very special place in my heart and, Robin and James certainly played a wonderful part of that experience!! Cannot recommend the Prairie House highly enough-the very best of Souther hospitality!
I had a great stay in Austin at the Zilker Prairie House. My room was beautiful and perfect - comfy queen bed, nice and cool, and sweet touches like fresh flowers, filtered water, and nuts and chocolate. James also accommodated my 45 pound Shepherd mix, which really made it work. There's a fabulous green space perfect for dog walks or running, or both, and no problem parking even though it's only about a mile from So. Congress hubbub and restaurants. Quiet and beautiful residential neighborhood and the house is an absolute treasure. I sat for a bit in the parlor with the coffee that James made exactly to my specifications and felt totally spoiled. So much nicer, less expensive, and better than a hotel!
James and Robin are kind and gracious hosts! I had a wonderful birthday weekend. The house is appointed with some of the most amazing art and James is an amazing artist as well! The hammock and the yard are "to die for" the bed was so comfortable and the water cooler, cashews and chocolate were such a huge blessing! I wish I were back to visit now. This is a little slice of heaven in Austin!
Robin and James were great hosts. They have a lovely home in a great location -- It takes about 20 minutes to walk to the river, and there are lots of great restaurants and shops to check out closer by on South Congress. My room was very comfortable (with much appreciated air conditioning!) and I had my own bathroom. Robin and James left snacks and water in my room and had breakfast for me in the morning (fresh fruit, yogurt, orange juice, granola, and coffee). I only wish I would have had more time to enjoy the house-- it has a lovely yard, hammock, painting area, and more to enjoy. Thank you Robin and James!!
