Description

The Space

Cute-as-a-Button Efficiency Cottage, located in the heart of Keswick Horse Country. One room cottage with kitchen, bath, twin bed and trundle. Conveniently located within 2-1/2 miles of Keswick Hall, 8 miles from Charlottesville, 10-12 miles to UVA, and near local historical attractions: Monticello, Ashlawn, Montpelier and local wineries. Great place to hang-your-hat while visiting the area. Nestled amongst shade trees on the Keswick Historic Mile - route 22.

Great location for Parent-Weekend at UVA, Homecoming, Foxfield Races, Horse Events in Keswick, Weddings at "the Hall", wine tours, etc.

The cottage is located behind our home on historic route 22/Louisa Road and Clarks Tract. Enjoy all that Charlottesville has to offer, community theater at Live Arts, Four County Players, the Hamner Theater, Black Friars Playhouse, etc. "Fridays After 5" on the downtown pedestrian mall is a must for mingling with the locals or enjoy the Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings on Water Street. First Fridays (the first Friday of each month,) is when local art galleries on the downtown mall have open house, or visit the plethora of wineries in the area (Keswick Vineyards is just a few miles down the road on route 231.) Then you may want to consider day trips to Washington, D.C. (2-1/2 hours away to the north-east,) Colonial Williamsburg, VA, (2-1/2 hours away to the east,) Richmond, VA (1 hour away to the east,) or beautiful Skyline Drive/Afton Mountain, (45 minutes away to the west.) Our family enjoys jaunts to some of the world's most beautiful caves: Lurray Caverns, Dixie Caverns, and Shenandoah Caverns - all within an hour and a half.

Just four miles away, our family owns and operates an antique mini-mall, featuring over 30 vendors of 18th, 19th and 20th century finds. (It's also the source of most of the cottage's furnishings.) But we are just as delighted to share our other favorite antiquing hot-spots! Begin your treasure hunt at A&W Collectables, and there, you can pick up a map to our other favorite antiquing hot-spots!

Guest Access

Feel free to roam any part of the yard. (Don't fall in the frog pond, currently under renovation.)

Interaction with Guests

We were away for several years, but we have moved back to the property and live in the house near the cottage! YEAH! Home! While living away, it was a pretty latch key operation, but now I may even get to wave and invite you over for a drink. And if you have a guitar, feel free to join me if you hear the not quite dulcet strains of a banjo. I am an undeniably poor banjo picker, but what I lack in skill I make up for in enthusiasm. :) I'm a writer, so I'm home most of the day, but I'm always available for chit-chat or whatever - just looking for an excuse to procrastinate. Feel free to knock on the door and join me for a cuppa coffee.

The Neighborhood

Keswick is a gorgeous community. Horse farms, wineries, and board fences abound. But the thing I like best about Keswick, is its quirky characters. There's an odd blend of Virginia FFV and good ol' boys, re-emergent ethnic diversity, affluence and stable poverty. Shifting fortunes seem to be taken in stride and there is no lack of local curiosity. It takes a while to meet local flavor. And yes, truth is indeed stranger than fiction. William Faulkner has some interesting quotes about Charlottesville and the area residents - all pretty accurate. :)

Getting Around

Sadly, there is no/very limited public transit in Keswick. (Jaunt bus and cabs.) Route 22 is a scenic country road. If you don't have a car, then car rental is probably best.

Other Things to Note

I have an in-door/out-door dog and cat, but the dog stays in her yard unless on leash. She has a funny bark, a lot of drool and even more fur. She'll greet you through the gate upon arrival. If you want to come into the dog yard, (presumably to play in the tree house?), please close the dog gate behind you.
(The cat will pretend to be friendly. She is... a demigod with unpredictable temperament.)

House Rules
No smoking

First rule, kick back and relax. Our cottage is small, but snug-as-a-bug cozy. We only ask that you please, smoke outside and respect the privacy of the neighbors. (Not me. Feel free to knock on my door.) The main house is situated quite close to the cottage and noise travels. There is a lovely outdoor sitting area behind the cottage, so enjoy your cigarette out there and watch the milky way and wildlife. If you are bringing a pet with you, (per prior approval), please keep him in your care and on-leash during your stay. There is a "horse spa" across the road, and they would be very sad to have one of their beautiful animals disturbed by your run-away pet.
I supply a set of sheets and comforters for both beds, two sets of bath towels, and kitchen towels, T.P. and hand soap at the beginning of your stay. Guests staying for longer periods should bring additional sheets/towels/TP/etc.
Please, upon departure, do your dishes, and throw out any old food. (This is an ivy covered cottage and as such, ants are just waiting for an excuse to invade. Yikes.) There is a trash can with a snap-on lid behind the cottage. This will go a long way toward keeping the wildlife at bay.
Wifi: Jareb1.

I am a mother, novelist, chicken wrangler, cat herder, and dog fur heckler. When I'm not parenting, or chasing aforementioned pets, I can most often be found in the writing cave. When social interaction becomes necessary, I work at the family antique shop.
