The Space

Lovely safe surroundings on Santa Barbara's Upper Riviera.
In a gorgeous natural setting, the rather rustic hillside house is spread out and guests have access to everything.....high speed internet, hot tub, decks with views of the mountains, etc. The property has about 2 acres of tall trees, lush vegetation, and amazing wildlife. Although there's a feeling of isolation, it only takes minutes to get to town, and is a serene refuge from crowds and traffic. [It's best if you have a car. [The nearest bus is about a mile away on a hill]
You'll find quiet, privacy, and peaceful living in this beautiful mountain view share.
Nestled in trees, with lots of garden and open space. Good modest room with very basic furnishings, and amenities of house, but bear in mind this is an old house and there are imperfections. The bathroom will probably be shared as I have two available rooms (see Natural Wonders/Privacy and Peace) It's not really possible to reserve one room or the other. Both probably have pluses and minuses! Longer term is usually interesting big wooden bed because it's harder to make and room has more storage space.
Non-smoking mature guests. No drugs, moderate alcohol, no visitors.
One single. Additional persons for $15 each.
Child over 10 possible...please inquire
Low rate for our expensive location and for people who want this special, casual atmosphere.and don't expect pristine luxury, but value comfort. A month or more will be asked to share in utilities.
Must like adorable, well, behaved dogs who do not invade your space! A compatible dog might be welcome if there are no other guests, and with extra deposit.
Off street parking available.
Continental breakfast for first day. Longer term, you might be on your own.....more elaborate if I'm inspired or some ingredients to make your own.

Guest Access

Guests have access to general living space of whole home and outside, except for other private bedrooms.
Guest bathroom might be shared

Interaction with Guests

Interaction with other guests is totally up to the guests....but definitely encouraged when appropriate.

The Neighborhood

I've lived in this spot the great majority of my life.
So far, I wouldn't consider anywhere else.
I guess it's the Natural Wonders of it all :)

Getting around

Public transit is about a mile away. It is best to have a car.

Other Things to Note

Good neighborhood walks and/or possibility for extensive hikes in the hills.
Sorry, but I rarely accept same day reservations. It doesn't work very well with my schedule.
I will be more likely to accept a reservation immediately that has a photo of the guest (your pet would be a bonus, but I want YOU) information and reviews or references, verification, why you are traveling, and a bit about a second person coming with you.

  • We enjoyed our three nights here. Arlene is inviting you into her home, sharing one of her bedrooms. This is not like going to a hotel, but going into a well-established home. It is up above Mission Canyon and I felt she gave me an opportunity to see yet another beautiful area of Santa Barbara. She makes a lovely breakfast and visits with her guests on their first day. While the drive up takes some getting used to, it is indeed a very beautiful drive and she will send directions so that you find your way. The views out the living room are beautiful, and there is plenty of outside seating if you want to be in nature.

  • The most interesting person in the world: she doesn't drink Dos Equis. She sips Cab.
She has a great secluded quite hideaway that has a Santa Barbara history of its own, but Arlene is the real treat!

    Response from Arlene:

So very sorry about the's a new pillow-top that is supposed to be "firm" underneath. I do have a bed board, but I'm not sure it would work with that deep mattress. I'll need to try the bed myself.
Anyway, hope you had a good trip back and told your bed how much you appreciated it!

  • We stayed with Arlene one night. She (email hidden), tended to our every need, and provided a tasty breakfast in the morning including her homemade yogurt. We especially enjoyed her beautiful view of the mountains!

  • (email hidden)! A beautiful wooden house in the middle of the trees with view on the hills of Santa Barbara. And Arlene is not just a very helpful host but also a wonderful person to meet. In my view, this is the (website hidden) hidden).

  • Arlene's house was beautiful! Had an amazing view of the mountains. The room was clean, as well as the bathroom. Arlene had breakfast waiting for us the first morning we were there, which was awesome. She was very sweet and she has adorable dogs too. Overall, it was a great airbnb experience!

  • To stay at the wonderful place of Arlene was one of the best choices of our trip so far. What an awesome location - just a couple of minutes away from downton but at the same time gives the feel of being way in land. Also Arlene (email hidden) that will do her utmost best to make you feel welcome and to have a great stay.
In short: a beautiful Santa Barbara, very special location to stay and a very warm person Arlene makes this already one of our best trips ever! Hope to come back soon.

  • Arlene was very friendly & welcoming. Her home is filled with treasures, the view of the mountains is gorgeous. The yard & sitting area is beautiful & peaceful. She prepared a wonderful spread of fresh fruits, homemade yogurt, teas, & coffee for breakfast. I wish I had been able to stay for longer than one night! I would love to stay with Arlene again, & recommend her home to all. Thanks Arlene for offering such a wonderful stay!

I am a children's dance instructor, and very fit and active so I'm basically moving most of the time.... at home, in the garden, out dancing, and just puttering around. I have three grown children, three grown grandchildren, and three elementary age grandchildren. I have lived in Santa Barbara since 1959 (great choice immediately after graduating from Vassar College) and in my special paradise home since 1963. I want everyone to be as enthralled with Santa Barbara as I am...come visit soon!!
