  • Wow! My husband and I stayed three great nights in this super cute, cozy cottage. The cottage was amazingly clean and seemed like it was new. It had everything that we needed including awesome knives, pots/pans, wine glasses, lots of maps/brochures of things to do in Bend, and a designated parking spot right outside the front door. The furnishings were super nice, cozy bed, clean bathroom, super hot water and great water pressure in the shower. Don is a great host. I really appreciated his hospitality and his local knowledge of the Bend area. He gave us lots of tips about where to go and what to do... very helpful.

    Response from Don:

Upon check-in, the first words out of this guest's mouth were..."The Cottage is brand new." Well, it has been a vacation rental for 16months but our goal is for it to always look "brand new" and be impeccably clean. It is reassuring to hear Cottagers', what we call our guests, reinforce that we are meeting and exceeding expectations.
The tankless water heater provides instant and continuous hot water for those leisurely showers or even a nice soak in the deep cast iron tube.
And the bedding and art work changes with the seasons so return Cottagers often see a new look.

  • We loved everything about our stay in Bend. The Downtown Cottage was awesome... Clean, quiet, close to downtown and very relaxing! Don is an incredible host, making sure we were enjoying our time. He even surprised us with a bottle of champagne for our anniversary night! He gave us directions to great hikes and a wonderful drive, perhaps one of most memorable times of the trip. The patio is wonderful, wish we could have enjoyed that more. The only problem with our stay was that we didn't stay longer! We would love to return someday, maybe bring the kids next time!

    Response from Don:

Marline and I have been blessed with such a positive response to the Second Street Cottage. Having been in central Oregon most of my life and covered a great portion of the State in various professional roles, I know numerous travel route alternatives to "A to B". Give yourself extra time to explore and I will be happy to ...add a few miles and lots of attractions to your travels. We appreciate our guests and honor their trust.

  • My husband and I stayed at the cottage for 5 nights during our golf vacation in Bend. The accomodations were wonderful and we were completely comfortable. The queen sized bed was especially comfy and the large bathroom was a treat. We had everything we could possibly need in the well stocked kitchen and bath. Several nights we walked to the nearby grocery to purchase items for a bbq dinner which we ate outside on the lovely patio. Other nights, we made the easy walk downtown for dinner and a stroll through the park. Everything was very convenient. We would love to come again.

    Response from Don:

Thanks for the great review. It is nice to see that guests do take advantage of the attractions and necessities (groceries and restaurants) within convenient walking distance. The Newport Avenue Market is an experience in and of itself. And the Cottage has flashlights for guests to use while walking at night. The patio is equipped with propane heaters for cool Fall night relaxation and star gazing.
The oversize bathroom was designed to be comfortable and relaxing, not just a small space with essential fixtures. One can dim the light above the deep cast Iron tub and soak in a relaxed environment. The tankless hot water heater provides an instant and endless supply to keep the tub water warm.

  • We had a wonderful stay. This cottage is in an ideal location - quick walk to downtown and the park. Quiet and immaculate as advertised. Most impressive was our host's attention to detail. We certainly hope this place is available when we return to Bend. My two children were very comfortable on the pull-out sofa. We could not have been happier. Thank you, Don.

    Response from Don:

Thank you for your kind words. We appreciate your mentioning the children being comfortable on the queen size sofa bed. Whether guest sleep in the bedroom or on the hide-a-bed, we provide 600 thread count or higher linens and a variety of blanket and pillow choices.
Marline and I strive to ensure the Cottage is spotless for every Cottager, what we call our guests. Guest reviews such as yours reinforce our efforts.
As hosts, we recognize there are numerous lodging choices in the greater Bend area and appreciate your business. Thank you.

  • My wife, 2.5 year old and I really enjoyed our stay at the cottage, it was the perfect size that met our needs. Don, the host, was very responsive and offered great suggestions even before we got there.
Location: Downtown is about a 5-10 minute walk, great restaurants, breweries, etc. We enjoyed Drake park and the farmers market. 10 Barrel Brewery is close by and Newport Ave Market is a great place for groceries.

Cleanliness/appearance: Really, really clean, one of the best rentals we've been to. Baseboards and crevices were even clean. The backyard was very nicely landscaped. We enjoyed a bbq with our friends there one night.

Amenities/etc: Bedding/towels were high thread count/luxury. There was a lot of attention to detail, things like all sizes of zip lock bags, different types of sugar/sweetener, all of the kitchen tools were there to make a great meal.

  • Very clean. Comfortable bed. Great location. Parking was OK with our small car, but a large car might be difficult. The owner was very helpful. We would stay here again.

  • I had the wonderful experience of staying at the Cottage for 6 weeks while I made the transition to living in Bend full-time. I was completely comfortable in this charming little home and was never wanting for anything! The kitchen is fully functional, the bathroom is spacious, and it was just the perfect size for me.
Not to mention-- the backyard is beautiful, and I even saw a family of deer on a number of occasions.
It's in a wonderful location. I walked downtown often, and it's only a 10-minute walk from all the coffee shops in town. My favorite was the Looney Bean. It has a huge back patio/yard area overlooking the river -- Beautiful!
Don and Marline are wonderful hosts. They made me feel so welcome and I immediately felt like I was a part of the community.
Don always made sure that I had everything I needed and was a great source of information about events and goings-on in Bend.
I feel so fortunate I discovered this little home.

    Response from Don:

What a wonderful review. Thank you Lauren. Still months away from completing the Second Street Cottage's first year of operation, certain trends have already been noticed and appreciated. While we want to offer the Cottage as a vacation rental year round, more emphasis will be made attracting longer stay "Cottagers" (what we call our guests) from October until May each year. We have reviewed rates and now offer Fall, Winter and early Spring rates for both weekly and monthly stays. We also have developed a clear and extensive document which outlines services for those staying longer than two weeks so all know what will be provided by the host (us). It remains our goal to provide a wonderful lodging experience for all Cottagers; short and long term.

  • My wife, friend and I spend three nights at Don's cottage. We had a wonderful time. The cottage is located within walking distance to many of Bend's top rated restaurants and brew pubs. Don personally called several of the restaurants in town as we were looking for local game meats. The cottage is as advertised, with new appliances and high quality furniture. We were only about 30 minutes from Mount Bachelor and spent our days there and our nights enjoying the Pine Tavern, 10 Barrel, Zydeco, Brother John's Ale Tavern and Deschutes. Overall this was a fantastic place to stay and we would highly recommend it. Thanks Don!

    Response from Don:

Dan and Amy were great "Cottagers". As a very long time resident of Central Oregon and Bend, I enjoy helping guests find just the "right" dinner house, pub, sports equipment store or activities personally suited for their unique desires. As Bend continues to grow, especially the number of brew pubs and restaurants, we try to stay on top of new offerings and choices, especially those "locals" favorites. Glad I could help and hope you are able to return, perhaps in the summer. Central Oregon is even more fun in the summer.

Don Ptacnik (say-Tack Nick) and Marline were married under the large White Paper Birch located in the yard between The Cottage and their home. Years later, one of our daughters was also married in the yard. That ceremony took place on the small terrace just outside The Cottage. We love our home and the large yard within which The Cottage is located. Between us, we have three adult children and eight grandchildren. Marline is a health care executive and Don, your primary host is Marline's Gardener and Painter. We both enjoy people and sharing our secluded space in Downtown Bend. Don has lived in central Oregon for over 40 years and has participated in a number of activities which has provided him with a broad base of knowledge in the available outdoor opportunities. You are welcome to ask for suggestions ranging from the best hikes, automobile tours, bicycle trails/routes to the hidden jewels of coffee shops, museums and other cultural offerings. We want our guests to be pleasantly surprised by the luxury and charm of The Cottage, the grounds and of course, the overall experience. We recognize guests have numerous choices competing for their entertainment dollars and want to provide excellent value and a memorable experience. When every guest departs our goal is to hear them say ...”We will return and will recommend The Cottage to all our friends”. So far, so good!
