The City of Bend and State of Oregon require all lodging operators (including Vacation Rental properties) to be licensed. All legal lodging operations will have a City Lodging license and a State Lodging Business Identification Number (BIN). When making reservations travelers should ask for the operator’s State BIN and proof of City licensing. When in doubt, you can contact the City of Bend ( (phone number hidden)). As compliance enforcement increases, traveler reservations with illegal operators could be adversely impacted. Know you are doing business with a licensed operator to help ensure a trouble free lodging experience.

Downtown Bend is just a 4 minute WALK from the Cottage. River hiking/running trails within 4 blocks.
Public transportation (Bus Stops) one block away
Other Things to Note

Bend has a noise ordnance and while we hope good sense and consideration of others would be the order of the day... The City is intent on strict enforcement. NO amplified sound after 10 PM.
We want our guests to enjoy the premises and the various seating areas, patio, BBQ, and seating area at the top of ..."The Stairway to Heaven".

Don's cottage was listed very accurately and he has taken great care to provide a lot of additional accommodations to make your stay as convenient as possible (i.e. quality shampoo, face wipes, q-tips, etc.) He was very thorough in communicating all the information we might need prior to our trip and checked in to make sure we got in alright. We did have a malfunction issue with the CO detector, but Don responded quickly and took care of the problem. Overall, we enjoyed our stay. Thanks.
Emily, her husband and guests did the right thing when the CO detector alarmed! They tried to call me and then called 9 1 1 . I am very glad they knew to protect themselves and our cottage. The fire department determined that the battery in the detector was faulty (only 10 months old). The CO detector alarmed again the next day and we immediately replaced it with a new unit. Emily left the cottage clean and in great shape. It is a shame their stay was interrupted by a faulty safety device and I gave them a significant discount in recognition of them being inconvenienced.
The Second Street Cottage was just perfect for our ski trip. Very nicely done with many amenities, comfortable and cozy, well equipped in all respects. Lots of information was available both on cottage instructions and area attractions. Don was very available and checked in to make sure we had everything we needed. Location was great to get around downtown. We plan to stay here again! Thanks Don.
Thanks for the review Lorraine. From the Cottage private parking pad to downtown is just a 4 minute walk yet the grounds are secluded. We try to equip the Cottage with a large variety of condiments and spices so our guests can spend their limited time in Bend playing rather than grocery shopping, especially for items which might only be used once during a visit. We want our Cottagers’ to be able to just walk in with their personal belongings and feel like everything they can imagine is available. The Cottage was professionally decorated and equipped with new everything. And yes, we do text or call our Cottagers to ensure they have everything they need and everything is working properly. If something is amiss, we want to correct and/or repair it immediately. We do hope to see the two of you again and soon.
Mount Bachelor and Hoodoo Ski Bowl are open with good snow for skiers and boarders.
Don has done a great job with the cottage. The cottage is well organized, efficient and very clean. We had everything that we needed for a week stay. Kitchen was well stocked for cooking. Bedroom was cozy and comfortable. The location is within walking distance of downtown Bend. Don was very helpful with recommendations. I would definitely stay again.
Thank you John for the nice review. Marline and I try to stock the kitchen and refrigerator with many commonly used spices and condiments. We want cottagers to walk in and have just about everything they need when preparing meals. And thank you also for mentioning the cleanliness of the Cottage. We strive for it to be the cleanest public lodging our guests have ever enjoyed. Hope to see you again soon.
Beautiful house, squeaky clean, and walking distance from the restaurants and bars downtown. The hosts were very helpful and gracious. Highly recommended!
We loved staying in the cottage! Don was a great host. He has obviously put a lot of thought and effort into furnishing and outfitting the cottage. As the name reflects - the cottage was immaculate! Don was so friendly and helpful in responding to our questions and suggesting activities that he thought we would enjoy. Even before we arrived, he asked us about our preferred activities and provided us with very helpful information. No detail or convenience was missed at this attractive and well-equipped cottage. We rate it a five star stay!
What a fun couple. Well in advance of a guest’s arrival, we routinely as what they would like to see or experience while in central Oregon. We often suggest alternative travel routes and side stops to make their miles on the road more interesting, diverse, and enjoyable. In the case of these Cottagers, they expressed an interest in pickle ball. We were able to give them the location of the public courts and even sent newspaper articles on the planning of new courts. Another desired ‘experience’ was to go stand up paddle boarding. We provide contact information and directions to some of the paddle board rental vendors. Marline and I have lived in Bend a long time, know the area well, and enjoy helping our Cottagers get the most out of their limited time. Do come see us again.
This is a great cottage in a great town. We really enjoyed our stay. Every possible thing you might need can be found in this well-stocked cottage. The cottage is well situated for walking into town. It is immaculate and just adorable. Thanks for the great stay in Bend!
Thanks for writing a review Jeanine. We hope our guests will truly be surprised and pleased with all of the amenities we provide. We do offer a very well stocked pantry for two reasons. One, we hate to see people having to buy a bottle of this or jar of that just to be used once or twice. First we see purchase of these smaller items as both expensive and wasteful. More importantly, every moment a guest spends shopping and spending money on condiments or spices is lost time and money which could be better used playing. We work hard to provide an extremely clean environment and hope all of our guests will notice the difference--most have and that is apparent from nearly every review. Thanks again for your business. Marline and I know travelers have numerous lodging choice and will continue to strive to set the Cottage apart from all of the other area vacation home rentals.
My family of four stayed at Don and Marline's adorable cottage located in a great neighborhood only a short walk over the river into downtown Bend. The cottage itself is decorated beautifully and functionally. After spending the first 7 days of our vacation in hotels, I can tell you that the joy of this cottage was in the details: A well-stocked kitchen, frosted beer mugs awaiting us in the fridge, laundry soap, nice toiletries, everything we needed at our disposal. The bed is very comfy and the shower is great! (Two key components to my travel happiness). The patio and gardens were a dream to come home to after a day out and about. Our girls were even lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a deer and her fawn in the yard one morning! Don was friendly and helpful and checked in by text once daily during our stay to see if we needed anything from household items to driving directions. It is very clear that he and Marline care about providing an optimal experience for their guests.
Don Ptacnik (say-Tack Nick) and Marline were married under the large White Paper Birch located in the yard between The Cottage and their home. Years later, one of their daughters was married ion the terrace overlooking the Cottage. We love our home and the large yard within which The Cottage is located. Marline is a health care executive and Don, your primary host is Marline's Gardener and Painter. We both enjoy people and sharing our secluded space in Downtown Bend. Don has lived in central Oregon for over 40 years and has participated in a number of activities which has provided him with a broad base of knowledge in the available outdoor opportunities. You are welcome to ask for suggestions ranging from the best hikes, automobile tours, bicycle trails/routes to the hidden jewels of coffee shops, museums and other cultural offerings.
We want our guests to be pleasantly surprised by the luxury and charm of The Cottage, the grounds and of course, the overall experience. We recognize guests have numerous choices competing for their entertainment dollars and want to provide excellent value and a memorable experience. When every guest departs our goal is to hear them say ...”We will return and will recommend The Second Cottage to all our friends”. So far, so good!
