Don's cottage was clean, bright and airy. It had everything you could possible want and was exactly where you would want it to be-- plus it was modern and really comfortable. The location was ideal. We parked our car, pulled out our bikes and walked or rode everywhere! Don was friendly and attentive. The garden and outdoor patio was gorgeous. We felt right at home and would recommend the cottage to friends and family in a heartbeat! We hope to come back soon. Thanks Don!
Fabulous find in Bend! The Second Street Cottage is a beautiful space in a perfect location. A wonderful oasis within walking distance of downtown Bend. The cottage is very clean and beautifully decorated, with just enough space to make anyone feel at home. Don was a gracious host, who welcomed us with open arms and even had a bottle of champagne waiting for us in the fridge. He was very helpful in our search for the best places to eat nearby (too many to count)and keeping us up to date on any issues(the internet was down for a short while). The kitchen is well stocked and has everything that you will need to cook, if you so choose. There is a grill on the back patio and the landscaping gives you the feeling that you're sitting in the middle of the forest. We very much enjoyed having our morning coffee with the resident family of mule deer.
We will definitely be back, thank you Don!
After a long, hot drive to Bend we were welcomed with a small bottle of champagne in the refrigerator and the air conditioner running. A perfect beginning to a wonderful stay. The place was exactly as described, everything new, clean, and in perfect condition.
The location just doesn't get any better, only a few short blocks to the downtown scene, but tucked away next to the river in the established area of Old Bend. The lovely yard, patio and privacy was an unexpected bonus, since the home is so close to downtown. The bed and pillows were high quality which made sleeping very comfortable. In addition, the home was full of thoughtful little things which make your stay easier.
Our host, Don, was very easy to contact and response time was immediate. He is also a long time resident and happily shares suggestions, information and tips for making the most of your Bend, Oregon experience. We wouldn't hesitate to come back to this place and would highly recommend it to family and friends. Perfect place for couples.
Thank you for taking time to write such wonderful review. We really do want our Cottagers’ to be surprised with all that we do to enhance their lodging experience. The only surprises we want our guests to have are good ones. We purposely understate some of the subtle benefits of staying in the Cottage. We have put ourselves in the shoes of guests. We have no need to embellish the description of Cottage. If an owner or manager overstates the property, it just starts off a visit with disappointment. Our numerous reviews attest to our attention to detail.
And yes, the seclusion is most unexpected being just a 4 minute walk to downtown. Deer frequent the grounds and often sleep in plain sight of the Cottage. We were honored to be selected to have our gardens included on 2012 Central Oregon Master Gardeners tour. Kick-back, sit in the sun, read a book or just day dream. The gardens are for relaxation and rejuvenation. We want you to enjoy our little slice of paradise.
I spent the weekend at the 2nd street cottage for my bachelorette party with my bridesmaids and we couldn't have been happier. It's a perfect location within easy walking distance from downtown, and on the west side so we were closer to all the outdoor activities at and around Mount Bachelor. The cottage is tucked away from the main roads making it very peaceful. The cottage itself is adorable and fully stocked with everything you could possibly need. We got to enjoy breakfasts on the patio with baby deer grazing in the backyard. Don was very accommodating, making sure we had everything we needed throughout the weekend. I highly recommend staying here!
Thank you for the detailed review. Since the Cottage is not on a street but rather a lightly traveled alley, it is secluded and peaceful (the deer attest to that). I was ride my bike around neighborhoods this morning and noticed what appeared to be travelers enjoying other vacation rentals. What struck me was that those travelers seemed to be out in the public’s eye and sort of cramped by surrounding properties. That is not the case with the Second Street Cottage. While just a 4-5 minute walk to the core of downtown Bend, it is set in a very secluded garden environment which invites relaxation and privacy. We recently constructed an addition to the main house (our home) which further increased the privacy for Cottagers and us.
Marline and I strive to anticipate what our Cottagers might want or need. We provide numerous seasonings and condiments. Our current guests spent time floating the river but forgot to pack their beach towels. I smiled and told them we had some available in the Cottage storage locker. They also forgot their Northwest Forest Pass but quickly remembered there is a “loaner” pass in the Cottage.
I hope you and your husband will come enjoy the Cottage…and do tell your friends about it too. DonP
I had a great experience at Don's cottage and would absolutely stay again! The pre-arrival instructions were extremely thorough as were the detailed instructions about the cottage amenities. Don also provided tons of recommendations for local restaurants and attractions.
The cottage itself is very clean and new. Everything was high quality. The cottage location was perfect-- 5 minutes walking to downtown and right next to the beautiful trail along the Deschutes River.
I used Don's cottage as a jumping off point for exploring Bend-- I went hiking in the Lava Caves south of Bend as well as Smith Rock north of the city.
Thanks for the great review Jason and mentioning the pre-arrival information we provide Cottagers. Our philosophy is that the lodging experience begins when one makes a reservation. We provide details about amenities, thorough directions and combination deadbolt operating instructions. We want the traveler to KNOW they have made a good decision to stay in our Cottage. There are many lodging choices in Bend and we try to set ourselves apart with extraordinary communications and responsiveness to questions. We put ourselves in the shoes of our guests and try to anticipate nearly every need. Come back anytime Jason.
Footnote: Jason had a late night check-in and had no problem finding the Cottage or getting inside.
Such a charming & beautiful cottage!! The cottage is in a great location and just a short walk to downtown Bend and to Deschutes River. The property inside and out is well maintained and clean. Don is a great host and includes a lot of little perks inside the cottage such as coffee, lotions & shampoo/conditioner, laundry, utensils/ frosted glasses/ plates and even spices for cooking if you so choose! We will definitely be back for a visit. Thank you for making our trip just a little bit more special.
Thank you for your detailed review. As frequent travelers, you clearly appreciated the many “little things” we provide for our Cottagers. The less time (and expense) a guest spends chasing down the goodies one has in their home kitchen or bathroom, the more time there is for playing or just relaxing. We want all of our Cottagers to experience a unique lodging experience—sounds like we met your expectations! Please do come see us again, perhaps mid-week this summer or fall.
Absolutely pristine cottage right next to downtown Bend. We truly enjoyed our stay at the cottage. The location is ideal and Don is a gracious host. Highly recommend!
I am glad you enjoyed your stay and hope you will return soon. Thanks for mentioning that the Cottage was "pristine". When I first started receiving guest reviews, it quickly became evident that travelers really do appreciate immaculate lodging. When I tell guests that I spend 4+ hours cleaning between each Cottager, they always remark that it shows. And if a guest has any questions or needs, Marline and I live on the grounds and respond immediately. At their discretion, guests can enjoy privacy or interact with us; your hosts.
About the Host, Don
Don Ptacnik (say-Tack Nick) and Marline were married under the large White Paper Birch located in the yard between The Cottage and their home. Years later, one of their daughters was married ion the terrace overlooking the Cottage. We love our home and the large yard within which The Cottage is located. Marline is a health care executive and Don, your primary host is Marline's Gardener and Painter. We both enjoy people and sharing our secluded space in Downtown Bend. Don has lived in central Oregon for over 40 years and has participated in a number of activities which has provided him with a broad base of knowledge in the available outdoor opportunities. You are welcome to ask for suggestions ranging from the best hikes, automobile tours, bicycle trails/routes to the hidden jewels of coffee shops, museums and other cultural offerings.
We want our guests to be pleasantly surprised by the luxury and charm of The Cottage, the grounds and of course, the overall experience. We recognize guests have numerous choices competing for their entertainment dollars and want to provide excellent value and a memorable experience. When every guest departs our goal is to hear them say ...”We will return and will recommend The Second Cottage to all our friends”. So far, so good!
