I stayed at Gawain and Gaby's place in November and December and it was a very pleasant experience. I could not have been more pleased with the room, kitchen and terrace. The location is perfect because you can walk anywhere without having to take taxis which is a bonus being a woman traveling alone. Gaby's brother Roberto is a great host. He's very attentive and keeps the place very clean. I was lucky enough to meet Roberto's family over Christmas and share meals and delicious fruit from their farm in Moquegua.
I would recommend this place to anyone visiting Arequipa whether it's only for a few days or for an extended stay. It is very comfortable, charming and safe.
The reservation was canceled 14 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
This is a good located place with a very pleasant terrace. Gawain wasn't here but he did everything to make us having a good stay.
A place where you feel like home!! Highly recommend to anyone who wants to discover the wonderful city of Arequipa.
La casa de la amistad se encuentra a pocas cuadras del centro fundacional de la ciudad, el entorno es tranquilo, las instalaciones de la casa son limpias y prácticas para el viajero.
We really enjoyed our stay here! The bed was pretty comfortable and everything was very, very clean. Robert was there to greet us (Gawain was out of town) and he was very friendly and welcoming! The shower didn't have hot water, which was kind of rough, but that seemed to be the norm in Arequipa as well as other parts of Peru. The terrace on the roof is every bit as lovely in the photos and my boyfriend and I had a good time enjoying it with a bottle of wine. I'd definitely recommend this place to others looking for a simple place to stay that's not too far from the Plaza de Armas.
Great hosts. Great location. Great rooms. Great view!
Very nice place to stay in Arequipa. It is very well located and you can walk everywhere. Nice terrace to enjoy the sun and the view. You ll just have to deal with very little warm water in the shower. Roberto was great with us and even waited with us for the taxi he called at 5 in the morning !
The house offered a relaxing home base for our final few days in Peru. The bedroom was simple but spacious with plenty of natural lighting. The terrace on the roof was wonderful-- the perfect space for enjoying our breakfast and reading books in the afternoon. The location of the house is excellent, too- within minutes of the Plaza de Armas as advertised, as well as other city highlights including the Monasterio de Santa Catalina and market San Camilo. Also, Calle Jerusalen around the corner offers a great selection of inexpensive menu options (5 soles +) for lunch and dinner. If you don't want to eat out, the kitchen is fully stocked with oven and stove, microwave, fridge, sink with filtered water, plenty of cooking utensils, kettle.
One note of caution we'd like to share after our stay: the house has four bedrooms, hosting up to eight people total, and only one shared bathroom. The bathroom itself is very large and clean. Water pressure seems to vary depending on the hour and day. When we visited the shower water was only lukewarm, but the temperature may also vary.
Besides the bathroom complication, the house works well as a community space that offers plenty of privacy. We spent some time with housemates in the kitchen and on the terrace, but for the most part each party kept to themselves. Wifi works well throughout the house although is noticeably slower on the roof.
Gaby and Gawain were in the US during our stay. I never met Gaby's brother Robert in person, but he picked up the phone after the first ring, offered to let us into the house immediately after I called, and left the main door unlocked for our arrival. My partner met him in the house and said he was very nice and welcoming.
This place is delightful. It is airy, clean and neat and I loved sitting on the roof terrace in the afternoons.
I had a wonderful four-week stay at Gawain and Gaby's Arequipa casa. Robert, Gawain's brother-in-law, does a great job of welcoming guests, maintaining the house in beautiful condition, and acting as a friendly cultural liaison. I happened to be a guest when members of the owners' extended families -- on both sides -- were briefly in town, and was welcomed and included in some unforgettable meals and conversation. My stay at Gawain and Gaby's place was comfortable in every respect, and a rewarding cultural exchange, as well. I hope to return one day, and I can recommend this exceptional home to travelers who want to both relax and experience genuine local hospitality. The owners and their on-site host deserve five stars in my opinion.
