The listing description was accurate, but we feel the high ratings gave us an inaccurate expectation of our stay. Put another way: lots of 5-star reviews don't necessarily mean you can expect a 5-star experience.
This is a 4-star deal for a 3-star rental, in which we had a 2-star experience. I'll get the bad out of the way.
Poor ventilation and no laundry: Our stay was during unseasonably hot weather, for which we can't fault our host. On the other hand, the place didn't offer adequate ventilation for such hot weather. There was no air conditioning and the only way to get any real air-flow was to open the unscreened door, which was an invitation to swarms of mosquitoes. We were roasting, which meant we were sweating, which meant we needed some way to wash our clothes. We used the only option available to us: the shower. Unfortunately, the host made it clear that we weren't to run the fan while we were out, so there was no way to dry our clothes.
Kitchen: WTF NO COFFEE MAKER AND NO KETTLE WHY.
Privacy: There is no door between the bedroom and the bathroom; just a curtain. You'd best be cool with your partner's sounds and smells.
Hygiene: It appeared that the place had been fumigated before our arrival, which we appreciated. Unfortunately, the floor was littered with insect corpses, and there was an extremely large cockroach in the sink. We get it: it's the tropics. But, you know, first impressions. Maybe do a final sweep before guests arrive. We also found a large chunk of broken glass on the bedspread, and my wife cut herself on a sliver of glass that remained on the bed. Since it was hot, we removed the bedspread and were fine afterward, but it indicated that the bedspread hadn't been washed after the previous guests.
The bikes: Don't expect to be able to ride everywhere. Local restaurants are pricey and mediocre and you'll need a car if you want to get anywhere interesting. The highway is NOT bike-friendly. Either do the truck deal and throw the bikes in back, or get a rental car.
The good stuff: All of the above sounds pretty negative, but it really is a great deal. The neighborhood is nestled under a beautiful mountain with a nearby hiking trail. In nice weather, the poor ventilation won't matter. If you're staying a short time, you won't need to worry about laundry. The host is very polite and offers good advice for activities. And if you're alone or used to hearing/smelling your partner pooping, then you'll be fine.
As for all the 5-star reviews: This is 5 stars if you're comparing to camping, but 3 stars compared to a hotel. It's a GREAT deal for the price, but don't expect too much. Bottom line: pack light for a short stay, rent a car, and don't stay here during hot weather. Better than camping, but don't expect luxury. Or a coffee maker.
Clayton's place was perfect for my week in Kauai. Awesome central location in Kapaa close to beaches, hikes and restaurants. One of the best hikes is within walking distance! Great place to stay if you want to get around the island and explore.
The place is clean, spacious and comfortable. Has everything you need to make for a great stay.
Clayton is a great host, super nice and accommodating. I would definitely go back!
The reservation was canceled 6 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
Place was just as listed. Having the truck was a blast (we named it Dora the Explora) and the apt is perfectly located to cruise around the island. Whether you want to go north or south you are not far away. Clayton was great to deal with, professional, friendly and very quick to respond. Don't bother with the resort, try this place out! You won't regret it and you'll get a real feel for (website hidden)- go to Java Kai for coffee and breakfast, its only an 8 min drive away!
We spent 7 nights at claytons apt and had an amazing time!
The apt is perfectly located between north and south shore. Safeway and nice restaurants are only a 5 min truck ride.
Make sure you include the truck in your deal. It will wait for you at the apt which is very convenient.
You'll have access to body boards, bikes and snorkeling gear as well!
Clayton was a wonderful and accommodating host. He's easy to get ahold of and responds quickly by phone or email. The place was clean and had just what we needed for our stay. Great neighborhood, close to everything in Kapaa. We took the truck option and I can tell you, just having the truck saved us money on a car rental elsewhere. The kitchen also helped with us on expenses as well. We made breakfast every morning and it felt like a home away from home. If this place is available on our next trip to Kauai, my husband and I would love to stay here again! Mahalo, Clayton!
Everything was as promised and delighful. We really enjoyed the house and the neighborhood. Walking distance to Sleeping Giant trailhead and easy bike ride to coastal trail. Clay was out of the country but took many opportunities to check in with us. It was a hasslefree experience with Clay and his place... and wonderful trip. Highly recommend.
