The Space

The Luxurious Apartment is the top two floors of a contemporary townhouse (1200 square feet).
Enjoy 180 degree ocean vistas. A two minute walk will get you to the cliffs overlooking the ocean. A ten minute walk will take you to Kehena black sand beach.
Contact your friends with the Free WiFi as well as phone line. and tell them about the sunlight streaming through the stain glass windows, reflected on the teak floors, teetering your wine glass on the balanese river rock counters while listening to the special magic of wales blowing and slapping their tails.
The second floor has a full kitchen, breakfast bar, expansive lanai, and tables for dining either in or outside, amidst the forever flowering garden. There is a toilet on this floor, and the black couch will convert to a queen bed. The kitchen is fully equipped including a full-size gas range, pots and pans, blender, microwave, toaster, boiling water pitcher, bowls and all the standard kitchen implements at your disposal.
The top floor has a new memory foam queen bed, walk in closet, Jacuzzi tub, and TV that can be used in conjunction with dvd player . Lay back in the teak lounge chairs and enjoy the view. We have seen whales breeching from up here.There is a washer with soap etc. and line dry area on-site for your use.
Nearby natural hot springs and tide pools offer awesome snorkeling, soaking and swimming in safe warm water, right at the ocean's edge. A fifteen minute drive will get you to a safe viewing area where you will see lava flowing into the sea. Or you can explore the old Hawaiian town of Pahoa a twenty minutes drive away with its wooden board walks, many restaurants and markets. And the special magic of hearing the whales blowing and slapping their tails at night, add to the magic of "oceanspirit". Come see for yourself.
Kalani Ocean side retreat is just a short walk or two minute drive away offering meals, massages and use of there pools and sauna for very reasonable rates.
The County operated bus service "Hele-On" stops one block away twice daily.
The neighbors and "locals" in Kalapana Sea View as well as the surrounding areas are relaxed, helpful, and friendly, and I have found, they will always give excellent tips on the best current things to do in the local area. So don't be afraid to schmooze a little. And don't miss Uncle Robert's at the end of the road, everyone's a night, for a unique island experience filled with music, dance, food and local crafts. And Sea-View's very own crafts, food and farmers market every Saturday morning.
We also offer local guide services to show you into the hard to get to and little-known killer spots for very reasonable rates. Rates will vary depending on group size, transportation, difficulty, outfitting and duration. Please feel free to inquire.
We also offer pickup at the Hilo airport for $40 for up to three people and luggage. We can greet you with beautiful, fragrant, handcrafted lays for an additional $18 per person.

The Neighborhood

"This is probably the coolest house in the coolest neighborhood on the big island. You'll be in Seaview, a block from the lavarock shore. Seaview is filled with friendly island hippies who say hi when they pass you, and everyone knows the Triangle House. Some people know it as the "Cheese House," because it looks like a wedge of swiss cheese lying on its side, with each window a porthole. This is my favorite neighborhood in the 4 that I've stayed at on the big island (kailua-kona/captain cook, hilo, volcano/mt view, na'alehu/ocean view). You're living in a gorgeous jungle, with great ocean access, a plethora of interesting artists and hippies, and the best neighborhood spirit I've seen. Every wednesday, the whole community of the Puna district ends up at a fair on the edge of civilization where the 1970 lava flow literally rolled over the city of Kalapana, called "Uncle Roberts at the End of the Road." I don't know a better way to say hello to a new community than that. Randall is a great host. He's a craftsman who cares a lot about the building, and is trying to improve its design for the people who stay in it. He's super easy to work with. He's been doing constant work on the property. It was designed by an architect who had a dream about "round holes and square pegs" and designed a property with a Triangle house, a Rectangle house, a Circle water catchman, and two Square sheds. There's also a real-life castle next-door. It's like living in a dream."

  • Randall Shipp ripped us off! He asked us to pay more than what he was asking based on hidden charges in house manual which are hidden until only after its booked. I am reporting Randall to airbnb as a warning to all future guests. Unless your up for surprising and unusual costs and being asked to leave early, do not book here. What he expects from his guests is to fall for a bait and switch on the price of the room. That is why he offers the discount. It's because he'll get it back with his hidden fee.

    Ethan made this reservation for someone else! which is a big NO-NO! And when I found out the day he checked in I should have canceled the reservation. But knowing how much this would have put them out (as there are very few accommodations in this area and everyone else I know was fully booked), I relaxed our policy and let him stay. They knew about the taxes (which legally all transient accommodations need collect and pay) and tried to get away without paying. Also two sets of keys were not returned so the locks also need to be changed. Airbnb mediated and this all came out of the deposit as that's what deposits are for.

  • We had a wonderful three night stay at this residence. It has wonderful views of the ocean and within walking distance to cliffs and beach. It is in a quiet residential area. We followed several of Randall's suggestions…Uncle Roberts (a must if you are there on Weds or Sat, Black sand beach, Mauna Kea Observatory at night, snorkeling in the warm water tide pools, and Volcano National Park. Randall has a great selection of books, and guides for the area. Also appreciated the beach gear for use such as snorkeling equip, cooler, mats and chairs. We would love to go back and explore the area some more. THis area seems to have less rainfall than the surrounding areas. The nearest grocery store is about 10 miles away so plan your food accordingly.

  • Randall's apartment was beautiful. We loved all the decor and all the windows. We used the upstairs deck to enjoy sunrises and coffee every morning. The coastline in the area is gorgeous, The location was great. Removed from the hustle, yet not too far from Pahoa for eateries. The apartment was well equipped with everything you need to adventure out. Much appreciated!

  • Randall's apartment is gorgeous, as you see in the photos, with views of the ocean and neighboring gardens. Having two floors was nice, as someone can be having coffee on the 2nd floor lanai, while someone else snoozes on the 3rd floor.

    There is no microwave, as someone else pointed out in a previous review. There is a blender, though, and a coffee maker and a Brita jug for filtered water. The appliances and kitchen were all in fine condition. There is a toilet located just off the kitchen. We did laundry and line-dried outside. Clothes dried quickly in the zephyr breezes.

    The bed is very comfortable with nice sheets. The bed is higher than most beds, I think. The bathtub/shower has a wide surround which could be a problem for someone with mobility issues. The 3rd floor toilet and bathroom sink are in a separate room, which is a nice arrangement.

    Wi-fi was adequate throughout the house, although Randall has plans to boost the signal strength. We mostly did email, web, and watched Jon Stewart clips.

    The night is dark and quiet. The morning sun greets you, as it rises in the east over the ocean. If you want to sleep in, bring eye shades. Me, I was glad to have the sun awaken me for another day in paradise.

    We are grateful to have found Randall's place as this discovery is what drew us to this area of the Big Island. We just settled in and had a wonderful and relaxing time.

    Randall's place is located on the beach road. At one end of the beach road is truly great snorkeling in deep tide pools protected from the ocean. There are currents, but not surf or riptides. At the other end of the road is Uncle Robert's Awa Club (in the Kingdom of Hawaii) near a new black sand beach being formed from the lava that destroyed the fishing village of Kalapana. In between are parks, warm water ponds, black sand beach, huge areas of pahoehoe and a'a lava. The beach road has quite spectacular scenes, trees overhead and ocean waves crashing against the rocks.

    Uncle Robert's has a night time market and party on Wednesday nights and Seaview has a morning market on Saturday. Friday at Uncle Robert's is live Hawaiian music and $8.00 kalua pork sandwiches. In Pahoa, the nearest town, a good value lunch can be had at Kalea's. It is possible to stay here on a budget and be just fine.

    We found Randall's place with little trouble in the dead of night. The only change we would make in the directions is that the turn into Seaview is about half-mile past mile 19, so about half-way between 19 and 18. In the daytime, the neighboring castle (yes, a castle, we are not kidding) is another landmark.

    We definitely recommend Randall's place ... clean, comfortable, peaceful decor. It was restful to be there and to be so close to the wonders of Big Island.

  • Randall's home was beautiful and everything we were hoping for. We had one problem with water our first day (due to the heavy rains), but Randall fixed the problem immediately and we had no further problems. You will not be disappointed with the location, views and comforts of Randall's home.

  • We enjoyed our stay very much. This unit is a very nice two floor apartment with beautiful views. Randall is super nice and willing to help in any way. He's always around the area so it's easy to just walk up to him if you have any questions. There is a washer now which I personally appreciate since we stayed 6 nights and really needed to do one wash.

    Two things to know is there is no microwave in this unit. It's not a very big deal because there is a stove and oven but, for me, something I wish I had known before I bought supplies our first night :/ Second, the water pressure is very low so when we ran the washer we could not take a bath or wash the dishes so we pretty much just sat around doing nothing for an hour. Again not a big deal since the views are gorgeous so sitting around doing nothing is plain awesome but something I wish I had known before I hit "start" on the washer. Randall is also making major upgrades so it's only going to get better.

    Final verdict, this is one great unit. I had the best vacation ever. Thanks Randall for making our stay so amazing :)

  • The home was fantastic and beautiful and was worth the long drive to get there.

    The communication with Randall was not good. We did not get a response to our email to Randall at the time of our booking, nor did he respond to calls and voicemail messages left to him on the day of our arrival (when we were trying to confirm the check-in process). We just drove to the address where his other renters (sitting on the porch) in the studio directly below us showed us the door to our apartment on arrival and told us where we could park and where to find Randall. We introduced ourselves to Randall on the second day by visiting his place (he lives next door) when we saw him home, but otherwise had zero contact with him. The only communication initiated by Randall was an invoice for tax that was left for us in the entryway of the apartment.

    I think Randall was not happy that we had our 16-month old baby with us. We should have made this clear in our reservation. I guess overall bad communication left a bad taste in everyone's mouth about this experience. Wish it had worked out better, the home is lovely and I would still recommend it.
