Perfect combination of family homestay and personal privacy - this three-room suite is part of, yet separate from, our warm and welcoming family home. Walkable and desirable neighborhood close to UC Berkeley and famous restaurants.

The Space

Bedroom suite available in Gourmet Ghetto neighborhood of North Berkeley. Very private spacious bedroom with queen sized bed, closet, desk, and dresser. Guests also have private access to adjoining sitting room and bathroom.

This room gets great light from South facing wall and is decorated with tasteful tiki details and exotic musical instruments. Sitting room provides a partial Bay view. Room is located on the ground floor of a two story well kept and neat Berkeley home shared by a local and home-grown family of 4 (couple with a charming 4 year old and hilarious and jubilant 2 year old). Family bedrooms and bathroom are all on the top floor so this is a very private setup.

Home is located blocks from famous California cuisine restaurants such as Chez Panisse, The Cheese Board, Saul's Deli, and Cesar. It's an easy 1 mile walk or a short bus ride to the BART station, giving access to San Francisco and the greater Bay Area, and less than a mile to the UC Berkeley Campus. And it's just a 5 minute walk up the hill to Berkeley's famous Rose Garden - the perfect place to watch the sun set over the bay. We are also in walking distance to the Greek Theater - although it's uphill and a bit of a hike.

Host was born and raised in Berkeley and would be delighted to serve as tour guide, concierge, or merely unintrusive innkeeper, depending on what is desired.

We have one small cat, but we keep the guest room very clean so those with minor allergies may be accommodated.

Guest Access

Kitchen, dining room and living room (in addition to suite with private bathroom). Breakfast is provided but is self serve. We usually have bananas, milk, oatmeal, bread, and eggs. And coffee and tea, of course!

Other Things to Note

When booking, please do not just make a request through the site without a personal message. We need to have some sort of interaction with the people who will be staying with us before we accept. After all, you're going to be staying in our home!

Please note that we do not take bookings more than 3 months in advance. We just don't know our schedule that far out and don't want to commit to hosting if we can't be sure we'll be around.

  • I only stayed one night, but would have liked to stay longer. The house is close, but not too close, to the UC campus and main drags. Also a short walk to the rose garden. With a private bedroom, sitting room (with view of SF across the bay), and bathroom (all just off the shared kitchen), this would be a really comfortable place for a couple (or a single) to stay for a few days. Insider tip: Ask Shoshana for a tour of the Kombucha factory.

  • My stay was short but delightful. Shoshana was quite welcoming. The suite is spacious, with a sitting room and private bath with a view of downtown San Francisco. It was a bit of a walk from the downtown Bart station but it's only a couple of blocks from Chez Panisse and lots of other restaurants. Highly recommend.

  • I totally enjoyed my stay with Shoshana and her family! This was my first Airbnb experience and I was not disappointed. I was a bit hesitant as I was traveling with my ten-year-old son and worried about the space being too cramped or that he would be on pins and needles but that was not the case at all. The suite provided more than enough room; he was even allowed to play the marimba. Further, Shoshana and her husband were very reassuring and helpful when I got very nervous about driving up Marin St. to Tilden Park. I plan on visiting Berkeley again with my husband and will definitely stay with Shoshana and family.

  • This was my first experience with Airbnb and I had a great stay here. My hosts, Shoshana and Tim, were extremely friendly and made excellent coffee in the mornings. The room was very spacious and comfortable, and the location was very convenient both for walking to the Gourmet Ghetto or UC Berkeley campus. I didn't have any issues with noise at all.

  • Our second time with the O'Keefe's and once again we had a very nice stay. The bed is comfy and the suite is actually a suite with a large bedroom, a sitting room and a private bath. It is fun being in a home with two delightful young sons. Our youngest has now graduated from school but if we do have need to be in the East Bay we will certainly reserve this lovely place.

  • Fantastic base for one night eating out in Berkeley - great central location meant no driving! Much more than just a room, it's a lovely little apartment style set up with a lounge and bathroom - and masks and musical instruments to play with! Shoshanna and family are lovely, and we we're pleased to have been given dinosaur names :)

  • Great stay! Warm and welcoming hosts; comfortable, nicely decorated, and clean rooms; and a wonderful neighborhood with many great restaurant and shopping offerings conveniently within easy walking distance. Exactly as specified in the listing. Would definitely stay with Shoshana O’Keefe again!
