Exceptional check-in experience

Recent guests gave the check-in process a 5-star rating.
A rare gem, this 1850s classic has the best of old and new: wide pine floors, cathedral ceilings, heirloom antiques—plus new appliances, a great sound system, 1 Gig Wifi, a TV and outdoor hot tub. Curl up by the woodstove or hike/ski our trails. Less than 10 miles to Stowe Mtn. Resort, Trapp Family Lodge and Stowe village, this quiet refuge feels worlds away. Don't see your dates open? We may be flexible but no last-minute discounts and no pets. Check out our Lake Dunmore Cottage too.

The space
From the covered front porch, step into the well-equipped kitchen that has seating for 3 at the butcher block bar, granite counters and all new appliances. A small mudroom is to the right.

The open-plan living room/dining room features cathedral ceilings, a wood stove that will keep you warm in even the coldest temperatures (there is also forced hot air heating) and views of the mountain ridgelines and trout stream.

The TV and sound system are hidden in barnboard cabinets and there's an antique desk. The bathroom with heated tile floors has a shower and there's a seasonal outdoor shower as well. Upstairs, two small, cozy bedrooms have full-sized (one smalller than queen) beds tucked under the eaves. There's plenty of room for clothes in the bureaus and closets.

Please note that the stairs to the bedroom are steep and the house is not recommended for people with mobility challenges.

Guest access
Set at the end of one of Vermont's most stunning valleys, the cabin backs up to 20 miles of state forest land. You will have privacy while soaking in the hot tub or enjoying the deck. There's access to hiking trails just out the back door, or to the Long Trail and Catamount Trails, just a mile up the road. Fish the trout stream across the road or hike around Lake Mansfield. There's paddling and swimming at the Waterbury Reservoir, at the start of Nebraska Valley Road. Come summer, the farm down the road has an honor system farm stand too.

Other things to note
We have been told this is the most romantic house in Stowe and it has been used for commercial photo shoots. Please note though that this is an older home in a very rural setting in the woods and by several streams.

Because of steep stairs and potential for snow and ice this house is NOT recommended for very young children, people with mobility challenges, or other disabilities and is best for the outdoorsy and athletic.

You may see wildlife large (bear, deer, and the occasional moose) or small (mice, spiders, chipmunks, raccoons). None are dangerous but we try to keep food contained so as not to attract them. It is very, very safe here. We know our neighbors and often don't lock but do keep the doors shut tightly at all times to keep critters out.

Note that there is limited cell service in the valley so be sure to set your phones to WiFi calling. WiFi password will be in the house guide.

If you have any allergies or environmental sensitivities --including to things such as gluten, nuts, pollen, mold or fragrances -- we ask that you disclose them within 24 hours of booking so we can address them. However, the house is in a wooded natural area and we cannot control factors such as bees, woody debris, humidity or pollen in the air. In the event of reactions, please understand that we follow Aribnb's "Strict" policy on cancellations and can't offer a refund.

Last, while we love animals, due to severe allergies and health implications, we cannot take even service animals. If you require an ADA-sanctioned service animal to perform specific tasks related to a disability, please let us know right away and we will work with you to find an appropriate location. Note that an emotional support animal is not ADA sanctioned and under Airbnb guidelines is considered a pet .

Hi! I'm a magazine editor who grew up in France and traveled extensively before falling in love with Vermont and meeting my husband here. We have restored two beautiful vacation rental spots here -- our 1850s 2-bed cabin in Stowe and in June 2020 completely renovated a larger, 3-bedroom/2-bath cottage at Lake Dunmore, near Middlebury, VT. Both are set up for year-round living-- serene places surrounded by nature, where you can be at a ski area within 15 minutes in the winter and fish, splash, paddle, hike and bike right out your door in the summer, fall and spring. We love sharing all Vermont can offer, providing recommendations for what to do and making sure your vacation is memorable. We welcome a diversity of cultures, beliefs, genders and skin colors and strive to make everyone feel at home and safe here. We hope you will enjoy and care for our little gems as much as we do.
