Enjoy a stay at the Clifton House, a beautifully restored historic estate in central Virginia. Built in 1780, this elegant home retains original architectural details while offering modern comforts throughout. The property is situated on 240 private acres, offering views of the Blue Ridge foothills and picturesque horse pastures. Guests can enjoy a luxurious equestrian retreat with access to top-tier, on-site equine amenities and well-trained horses available for guided rides across the estate.
The space
Enjoy a quiet retreat, a family reunion, or a special event on the scenic grounds of Clifton House. This beautifully restored historic home sleeps 11 and features 4 bedrooms. The spacious primary suite offers a king bed, daybed, and sitting area—ideal for couples or a bride-to-be. The second bedroom includes two double beds and shares a full hall bath with the primary suite. Two additional dormered bedrooms, accessed either via the second bedroom or a private staircase, offer a queen bed and two twin beds, along with another shared full bath.
Downstairs, you’ll find a large dining room with seating for 14, a comfortable living room with satellite TV and a workspace, and a fully equipped kitchen that seats 8. Outside, enjoy beautiful lawns, a brick patio, propane grill, fire pit, a pond for fishing, and a bubbling stream that borders the property. Open fields invite peaceful walks and exploration.
Clifton is also a destination for equestrians. The property features a 22-stall barn, a riding ring, and 140 acres of pasture and hay fields. Guests are welcome to bring their own horses or ride one of ours. Trail riding is available on-site, and we offer access to our riding facilities throughout your stay. As your equestrian concierge, we can also schedule personalized riding lessons or experiences with top-tier local trainers. Whether you're new to horses or an experienced rider, we’re here to help you craft a custom equestrian getaway. Contact us for more information!
Guest access
There is plenty of guest parking beside the house. Entry is through a keypad lock on the back door. Our driveway does cross railroad tracks as you enter the farm. This is a private crossing with NO WARNING LIGHTS. Please cross with caution, stopping to check both directions. Amtrak and freight trains do use the tracks daily.
The farm is a 5 minute drive from both scenic Orange and historic Gordonsville and 30 minutes from Charlottesville. There are many great restaurants, wineries and historic sites to explore a short drive away.
Other things to note
Dogs are welcome but we require a $75 pet fee. For the safety of your pet, they must remain leashed or with you while outside. The resident horses are not welcoming to dogs roaming their fields. We also ask for your help to clean up after your pet in the yard. Many thanks!
