This is as nice as the other reviews state. The Secret Retreat is in a very nice area of Barcelona. We were able to walk just about anywhere. They were fantastic hosts and thought of every detail from the perspective of a first time visitor to Barcelona. They even had electric adapters. If we ever come back we will definitely stay at the Secret Retreat.
Rod and Stan were ideal hosts. From the very beginning we received their upmost attention. They provided more amenities than any other Airbnb home that we have ever stayed in. Spotless, comfortable, quaint, classy and most importantly, a classic Spanish flat. It was the perfect location to walk & explore lovely Barcelona. We got to cook, iron, do laundry, check our emails and even listen to our tunes via bluetooth. We enjoyed coming home and unwinding with a couple of drinks on the terrace, too! Our neighbors gathered around their terraces, so late evenings were full of great conversation, some eavesdropping and/or the occasional howl of a neighborhood dog. If you enjoy living like a local and experiencing a classic European flat, this is the place for you. We look forward to returning in the near future and making it our Spain getaway whenever possible.
My girlfriend and I arrived to Barcelona and to Rod + Stan's apartment after a couple of weeks of traveling in France and England. We spent most of this time traveling with other people, sharing other accommodations, sightseeing, attending a friend's wedding. Every bit of it was wonderful but we were ready to turn the dial down a little bit. All of that is to say there could not have been a better apartment or better hosts to make that happen. Rod was able to meet us a little earlier than the normal check-in and provide a very thorough overview of the ins and outs of the apartment, neighborhood, and city filled with tips, suggestions, history, and humor. I know all Air BnB situations are different, but in our opinion this was the way you welcome guests.
And they really have thought of everything. There were complimentary snacks and wine upon arrival as well as a stock of drinks and snacks you can pay for. Of course all the pictures and description are accurate. The building and apartment have loads of charm, style, and all the amenities you might need. It's impeccably clean and comfortable - such a relief after coming from another apartment that did not have a/c or comfy beds. Everything that you might need while traveling seems to be right where you might need it. And you don't have to compromise any of the things you sometimes compromise while traveling - quality of bed, shower, bathroom, kitchen, decor, etc. And though we didn't have any issues, we were assured by Ron they were a phone call or text away if we needed anything. We never doubted that.
The location is perfect for seeing what is a very walkable city. There's a metro stop and taxi stand right out the front door when you need it. Restaurants, bars, Gaudi, art, shopping seemingly in every direction. It's a relatively short trip, even walkable, to the beach(where we spent most of our time). The only thing we regretted was not having more than 4 days in Barcelona. We will be back.
We had a great time exploring Barcelona from Rod and Estanis' apartment. A beautiful place with lots of info from Rod about where to go and what's on locally.
The place to stay in Barcelona--perfect location, amazing hosts, fully outfitted (including shopping bags for groceries). A sanctuary in a busy city. Great eateries nearby. In same neighborhood as Moderniste sites you will want to visit. Walkable distance from tourist center yet away from the crowds. Short cab ride to Basilica of the Sagrada Familia and Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site (both on "must see" list). Truly like visiting a friend's apartment in a gracious old building in an exciting city. Near grocery and natural food stores for stocking up the refrigerator. Welcoming, gracious host who respects your privacy yet is available when needed (as in when luggage when our luggage was lost). Clean. Great towels. Comfy bed. Book it!
Everything about staying here was perfection! From the moment we arrived at Rod and Stans gorgeous Atelier / Studio we were blown away. We were immediately met by Rod - who was so welcoming and helpful.
They left us a little welcome basket with wine and movies (hehe) and immediately we had a tour of the entire floor - including getting to meet Rod, who was working on a custom, couture dress. Rod then went over the entire city with us on a big map that they have posted on the wall behind the sliding barn door, explaining a brief history of Barcelona from Medieval times to present day, and showing us each area of Barcelona, how to get to and from places using the very conveniently located Diagonal Metro station (right outside your door). He was full of useful info including how to avoid the touristy Tapas, and where to go for authentic Tapas, what to see and when to go etc. Very helpful.
The place itself is a dream - It was like staying in a 5 star boutique hotel! So well designed, air conditioned, huge gorgeous double doors leading to a lovely veranda with mood lighting and views of gardens and courtyards - everything you need is there for you, including an "honour" mini bar. It was absolutely fabulous.
The flat is located in one of the bougy-ist neighbourhoods in Barcelona, with Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, etc all within a block of you - no that we went to any of those places, but it was still cool to be in the neighbourhood. Also some amazing restaurants and more approachable shopping all within a 5 to 10 minute walk from your front door.
We also went on a day trip to Sitges (a small beach town about 30 minutes outside of the city) - we walked one block to the Passeig de Gràcia Metro station where we jumped on a train that took us along the coast (beaches and the sea the whole trip) and through a tunnel in the mountains to this lovely beach resort town. I highly recommend everyone who is there for more than 3 days make a day out of Sitges. Very cute place, amazing beaches, amazing shopping and food. Really lovely.
We were on our honeymoon and this was the final stop after being in London for 5 days and Paris for 3 days - we spent 5 days in Barcelona with Rod and Stan and it was the perfect, luxurious, relaxing ending to our European vacation. We will most definitely be staying here again when we return to Barcelona. Thanks Rod and Stan!
The Secret Retreat with hosts Rod and Stan was a great find and a wonderful oasis in the city. The location in Eixample is perfect - close to cafes, restaurants and top sites. While in the middle of things, the place itself - and the nice, little terrace - is a serene, quiet hideaway. We couldn't have asked for better. The apartment is decorated with great care and with an extraordinary level of guest information - everything you need to know about how the place and its contents work is there for you. Very organized and very thoughtful. Thank you so much Rod and Stan. We hope to see you again down the road!
