Hale Aloha Aina (House of the Loving Land) is the perfect hideaway for couples seeking a remote destination that inspires intimacy and adventure.
~ This romantic Hawaiian cottage is nestled on eight acres of lush tropical flora, fruit trees and three acres of meandering paths with manicured lawns. It is truly the ultimate escape with no other homes on the property.
~ The cottage is beautifully furnished with a fully equipped kitchen, spacious bathroom with tub/shower, outside shower, washer/dryer, Free Wi-Fi, free long distance US calling, bicycles, snorkel gear and many extras for your vacationing needs.
~This home is totally self-sufficient with solar power and gas appliances for sustainable green living. Private community water source provides the purest water on tap.
~ Wood Valley is a hidden treasure on the southeast side of the Big Island, which is the least populated area in the district of Kau, internationally famous for their award winning coffee.
~Preserved for generations to come, much of the Kau coastline remains untouched and known as one of Hawaii's last frontiers. Volcanoes National Park, exotic black and green sand beaches, historic sugar town, macadamia nut farms and coffee plantations are 20 minutes drive from the cottage. It is he perfect destination to explore the east and south west side of the island.
~ Comfortable mountain climate at 2500 elevation lends to low humidity with cooler nights so there is no air conditioning. A gas fireplace will keep you cozy in the winter months. The coqui frogs have not invaded the Valley as of yet so all you will hear are the local farm animals and crickets at night.
Many of our guests never leave this hidden paradise. There is so much to explore right in your back yard. Avocados, bananas, grapefruit, pineapple, lemons, limes, tangerines, guavas, jackfruit and many other exotic fruit trees are there for the picking when in season. Meandering paths and manicured lawns filled with exotic tropical flora provides a park like setting. Relax on the covered lanai or the hammock with a book and just breathe!
This home is totally self-sufficient with solar power and gas appliances. The generator provides power to the batteries in times of cloudy weather or if the batteries run low. It is a very efficient system which provides electricity to kitchen appliances and any plug in's such as the stereo and television. The water heater is on demand which runs on propane as well as the refrigerator and stove. A private community water source supplies fresh spring water drinkable from the tap. We do not have to rely on a catchment system to provide water. There is also an emergency backup water tank that should last three days. Island weather can be very unpredictable and in the event of a storm you couldn’t be in a better location. You will never be without POWER or WATER!
There is generally a three-night minimum but in the event one or two nights are available between bookings we are happy to book it for you. We offer a discounted rate for last minute inquiries and longer stays. Weekly guests receive one bag of KAU coffee grown in Wood Valley. Ask about Last- minute, Active Military and Kamaaina discount rates.

We had an amazing stay here. Incredibly peaceful (didn't see another person at all). Beautiful beyond. Lifetime memories made in this very special place. Highly recommend. We will be back for certain.
Hale Aloha Aina is the perfect place to get away from it all. Missy has a very cute cottage with all the amenities - even an outdoor shower. The surroundings are beautiful and when we arrived there was fresh fruit from trees in the yard on the kitchen table.
Missy was so friendly and accommodating. We chatted when we booked the reservation and called her when we arrived to let her know that we got there safely. She was always available for any questions or anything we needed (though she's thought of nearly everything already!)
Wood Valley / Pahala is very close to one of the only black sand beaches on the Big Island, and about 30-40 minutes from Volcano National Park in one direction and the southernmost point in the US in the other. It's a great base to use in exploring the island, or just a place to bring a book and relax.
I would highly recommend staying here!
I can not begin to describe how incredible this experience was. First and foremost, Missy made us feel like welcome friends from the minute we made the registration. Her attention to detail is unmatched! Next, the property exceeded our expectations in every way. The minute you drive through the gate you feel relaxed. All the fruit trees are amazing and the home was meticulously furnished. Most importantly the bed was comfortable and the home had EVERYTHING we needed. Mahalo Missy!!!
Thank you Kathy for the wonderful comments and compliments! We have been renting our secret hideaway since 2001 with an occupancy rate of 85%. Who would have thought so many people from around the world would enjoy total seclusion from the rest of the world... in paradise! This place was just meant to be shared and all of our guests feel like family once they have experienced how special it really is. PLUS... Nothing better than a good nights rest!! We are glad you enjoyed your stay at Hale Aloha Aina and we hope you will have a chance to return. Please spread the word so we can continue to offer this sanctuary for all to enjoy! Much Aloha, Tom and Missy Powell
Very remote, very secluded. Highly recommend shopping in Hilo, Kona, or Ocean View Estates (great grocery there) BEFORE arriving. We shopped at Mizuno's in Pahala and made do with what we could find, which was fine. Bring a deck of cards, a book or a board game and prepare for a quiet time. Missy has the place stocked with everything you could need. Fresh gardenias and fruit in the cottage when we arrived. Close to Volcanoes NP and the black sand beach. It was a bit tricky communicating with Missy since I was one of the first airbnb renters but it all worked out fine. Lovely place, mahalo!
Heavenly. We had a wonderful time. The cottage is perfect and the property itself is breathtaking. We struggled to believe that this place could actually exist. The first morning we woke up with the sun streaming up the valley and straight into the cottage we were about as happy as two people could be.
The cottage is in a great location for sightseeing, black sand beaches, the volcano and the beautiful south eastern corner of the Big Island etc but to be honest, we found it hard to leave. Some of the prettiest scenery in all of Hawaii is right on your doorstep.
Our suggestion: pack some food, books, and whatever else you like and wipe your plans off the books. Stick around. Leave only when you feel like it. Breathe in the through the nose and out through the..........zzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzz :-)
