Situated near 'the Mall Gardens' in Floriana and a 5 minute-walk from the Main Gate of Valletta, this very characteristic ground-floor apartment, is an ideal place for a short but intensive stay on the Islands of Malta. Being it just a stone's throw away from the island's capital, Valletta with its breath-taking Grand Harbour and cultural heritage, and from the island's main bus terminus, one can easily reach all parts of the archipelago to visit the numerous cultural and archaeological sites, sandy and rocky beaches, and shopping and fun centres (pubs, bars, restaurants and clubs). This newly refurbished apartment consists of 1 double bedroom, 1 single bedroom, spacious living room, a converted yard which hosts a luminous relaxing/dining room, 2 bathrooms and a cellar. This apartment can accommodate up to 7 persons cause it has two comfortable sofa-beds.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR A PLEASANT STAY AT 28, V. DIMECH STR FLORIANA
Being nature-lovers, we would appreciate if you can help us keep our plants alive and flourishing, by simply watering them at least once during your stay and avoid water and electrical wastage when unnecessary. Please refrain from smoking in the house, use the “Smoking area”. There are some valuable furniture in the flat which belonged to my grandparents, so please take care. Otherwise, feel at home and enjoy your stay!
We were made very welcome by Claudette by correspondence and in person by Tessie when we arrived. The apartment is very conveniently sited, in easy walking distance from the bus station and Valetta and also has available overnight parking nearby. A small shop nearby has all necessary basics.
The description is accurate, but it was darker and colder than we had expected, but it was January and it was a particularly cold and wet week! I imagine it is lovely in the summer.
Summary: could be perfect.
The apartment is charmingly decorated - particularly the exposed structure which looks to be quite old gives it a unique vibe. The kitchen is adequate for simple cooking (with one cooking pot and one skillet, but a nice 4-hob gas stove), if a little small (although the large dining table provides ample work surface if you need it). It is also very well located, with the old historic centre of Valletta and the main bus station only 10-15 minutes away on foot. I did find it a little tricky to find places for grocery shopping, but they are there if you look carefully (a convenience store is just around the block selling mostly conserves and non-food items - vegetables and other fresh ingredients I found in Valletta).
I do have a few criticisms that I think I should mention. The first concerns the ground floor shower. On the first day of my stay, this seemed to work fine, but later I started having problems; the shower would give out very little water and this water was very hot - almost as if there was no cold water coming in. It is possible I wasn't using it right in terms of switching the boiler on or off or something like that, but then again I followed the instructions that were provided. Also my short stay and busy schedule didn't allow for somebody to come by while I was there to try and fix the problem. So in short, I don't know whether this is a structural issue at all.
Since I couldn't get on with the ground floor shower, I tried the one in the downstairs (basement) bathroom. This required some extra instructions from Claudette but she was (as always) very quick in communication. I did find the water pressure to be a little low and more importantly, after using this shower there was an unpleasant smell of damp, particularly in the master bedroom. This smell didn't linger very long though, and as I understand it this bathroom is a work in progress.
Finally, there was a small infestation of millipedes (a few dozen), particularly in the basement. This wouldn't be so much of a problem if the basement didn't have that bathroom in it, and if they didn't also turn up in the rest of the apartment, which they did. They weren't very bothersome as they were slow-moving, harmless creatures, but still they weren't nice to look at and it does make one a little uncomfortable to have them there. I should say the apartment was generally quite clean, and I couldn't work out where they were coming from, so perhaps this was just an incident.
If these issues are addressed, I would highly recommend this apartment. As it was I still got good value for money, and enjoyed my stay overall, but it left me with slightly mixed feelings.
I have spent two days at the Claudette's place and in general terms my stay was very pleasant. The location of the apartment is great, it takes you 5 minutes to reach the bus station and the down town.
Trisa was waiting for me, she showed me the house and how to use the different istruments around very nicely. Even though I couldn't meet Claudette she was very kind solving all my doubts.
The apartment is very spacious, clasic walls, and the most important, super lightly since it has a glass ceiling. The kitchen is fully equipped, good bathroom and towels for the showers.
The only negative side, as other people mentioned, is the stong smell of moisture in the bed. Nothing to do with the apartment since Claudette has placed freshener all around making stay in the main area very pleasant, but the smell of the bed is definitely something that has to be changed..it was quite difficult to sleep.
Thank you Claudette!
Location of the flat is really good- very close to the mail bus stop from where you can take a bus to any part of the island.
The apartment is a good size and great value for money.
The only down side was the smell coming out from downstairs, but we closed kitchen door and that helped a lot. We only needed a place to get a few hours of sleep in between discovering beautiful Malta, so where not bother about the smell that much as we didn't use the kitchen or stayed in the apartment that much.
Thank you Claudette for quick responses to my emails and lovely cookies you left for us :-)
I'm Maltese, even though I live between Malta and Italy. I love travelling and getting to know people from different cultures and that is why I joined Airbnb.... I would like people to get to know the Maltese culture:)!
