The stay was fantastic! The location, the accomodation, and the overall charm of the boat is definitely worth raving about. If one loves simplicity and peace, Nigel's Funky boat is certainly perfect. It is hard, if not impossible to find a more tranquil and relaxing place to stay in Vancouver.
NIgel to was great. He provided us with everything we needed and communication with him was clear and accomodating.
Nigel was easy to work with -- he responded quickly and was flexible with our arrival. As others have said, if you're looking for luxury this isn't the right option for you (camp toilet still in effect), but if you like boats and are looking for something fun and different, this is a great option. We hope to buy a boat ourselves one day so this stay was a good sample of the pros (the SEA!) and cons (maintenance constantly needed) of calling a boat home. The neighbourhood is really good too. Thanks for the stay, Nigel!
Our stay was wonderful! The view was spectacular and the host couldn't be nicer! We had difficulties with our arrival time and he was very accommodating. He also went out of his way to ensure we felt welcomed and well equipped. We slept soundly (we were a bit worried about the rocking, but we hardly felt anything). We would rent this again any time!
Our stay on the funky coat was very pleasurable. Fantastic neighbourhood and Nigel was great to deal with.
Finalizing our holiday on a boat seemed a great idea. On BNB we ran into the Funky BOAT of Nigel and it looked good.
Communication with Nigel went ok and also in real life Nigel is a nice easy going guy. He gave some tips for our stay in Vancouver en showed us around on the boat. He even brought us some muffins :-)
The boat lies in the Vancouver harbor directly at Denham street and the Stanley park. Great location!! Having my morning coffee on the top deck with people running by to the park and the sun coming up over the harbor was great!
To be honest, the boat itself wasn't as neat and clean as it appeared in the advertisement. The pictures in the advertisement aren't really representing the current state. The little seat shown in the pictures wasn't there and things looked a bit older. We weren't expecting to be using a mobile camping toilet. Updating the photo's is advised to match expectations with reality. However, we enjoyed our stay anyway. There was enough warm water in the shower en everything worked as it should. The nice thing is that you really are staying at Nigels boat. Hang loose!
All together is was a great experience for us to stay at his place. If you expect a 5 star yacht, go look further but if you're easy going yourself and like to stay on a boat, this might be a nice place for you.
Nigel always replied promptly to emails and made us feel welcome. It is a great experience staying in a boat so close to the city. Close to restaurants with wonderful views over coal harbour and also to shops. We had a long walk around Stanley Park before returning to breakfast on our top deck. The boat has everything you will need and a comfortable bed.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay on Nigel's boat! The location is great, conveniently located next to Stanley Park and busy Denman Street without being loud at night. It's also very close to the bus stop that takes you downtown/ sky train, though walking is only about 15 minutes. Nigel is very friendly and was available each time we needed him, which unfortunately was several times during our trip. There were several hiccups (blown fuse, power outage, running out of water) that happened, but each was fixed quickly (via phone or in person). That being said, this is not the listing for you if you are looking for luxury. If you are handy and mobile -my partner had to do a bit of climbing 'round outside the boat to get windows closed when it rained, check power source, etc.- all the better. The boat was tidy, but well lived in. For those of you sweating the little details, again, not the place for you. There was an old plate of food awaiting us, the majority of light fixtures were partially unhinged, bathroom garbage can half full, etc. Again, none of this was a concern for us, but important to note as it might be a problem for some. The only major concern we had was the toilet. Upon our arrival, Nigel casually informed us that the toilet was broken, but that he had a camping toilet we could use. For those of you unfamiliar with a camping toilet ( like I was) , just picture a little plastic box you do your business in. I took one look at it and KNEW it was insufficient to accommodate two people for nearly 5 days. Nigel was so non-chalant though and mentioned he would pop by Friday or Saturday to check on it though, so we didn't press the issue. Instead, we just made frequent trips to the nearby Starbucks and reserved the toilet usage for late nights/early mornings. Even with our stringent precautions the toilet was nearly full by the third night, which was a total pain in the butt since it necessitated getting up/dressed and walking to find a bathroom . We would have emptied the toilet if we had been told how/where, but weren't given any instructions and weren't exactly dying to attempt to move a heavy plastic box of human waste lest disaster strike. I have stayed without toilets, used outhouses, etc before, but I just wasn't expecting that. Further, I got the impression the toilet had been broken for a while (?), so I would have appreciated being told beforehand so I could decide whether I wanted to change/cancel my booking. I have had hosts contact me beforehand to let me know of much less important changes to rentals, to allow me to make changes or to offer discounts. On that note, I should mention that we did alter our booking (arriving one day later and extending our stay) and Nigel was very accommodating with that.
