Williamsburg is an influential hub for indie rock, hipster culture, and the local art community. The neighborhood is being redefined by a growing population and the rapid development of housing and retail space particularly catered to a wealthy population that has been historically foreign to the neighborhood. The specific area we are in was historically Italian and you will still find great Italian bakeries and restaurants scattered around the neighborhood. A significant component of the Italian community on the North Side were immigrants from the city of Nola near Naples. Residents of Nola every summer celebrate the "Festa dei Gigli" (feast of lilies) in honor of St. Paulinus of Nola, who was bishop of Nola in the fifth century. The immigrants brought the traditions of the feast with them. For two weeks every summer, the streets surrounding Our Lady of Mount Carmel church, located on Havemeyer and North 8th Streets, are dedicated to a celebration of Italian culture.
The first artists moved to Williamsburg in the 1970s, drawn by the low rents, large spaces available and convenient transportation, one subway stop from Manhattan. This continued through the 1980s and increased significantly in the 1990s as earlier destinations such as SoHo and the East Village became gentrified. The community was small at first, but by 1996 Williamsburg had accumulated an artist population of about 3,000. Art galleries in the area include the Front Room Gallery. Williamsburg and Greenpoint are served by a monthly galleries listings magazine, wagmag. Theater is also represented by indie theater spaces such as The Brick Theater and The Charlie Pineapple Theater.Williamsburg has become a notable home for live music and an incubator for new bands.
My house is 3 blocks from the Lorimer stop on the L train, which goes into Manhattan. The Lorimer stop is the second stop in Brooklyn on the L. You can be in Manhattan within 5-10 minutes from the Lorimer Street stop. The G train, which travels throughout Brooklyn, also stops at Lorimer/Metropolitan Avenue.
In general, Williamsburg is served by 3 subway lines: the BMT Canarsie Line (L train) on the north, the BMT Jamaica Line (J M Z trains) on the south, and the IND Crosstown Line (G train) on the east. The Williamsburg Bridge crosses the East River to the Lower East Side. Williamsburg is also served by the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.
Several bus routes, including the B24, B32, B39, B44, B44 SBS, B46, B60, and Q54 terminate at the Williamsburg Bridge/Washington Plaza. Other bus lines that run through the neighborhood are the B43, B48, B62, B67, and Q59.
As of June 13, 2011, North Williamsburg is served by the East River Ferry to 34th Street and the Wall Street area, leaving every 20 minutes during rush hour and every hour during the rest of the day.

Hannah and her place were great! I messaged her at 8pm and was able to move in that night! Her place was spotless and probably the best airbnb I have ever stayed in. Highly recommend!!
We enjoyed so much staying at this Williamsburg apartment! It was so conveniently located to all buzz and attractions of Williamsburg, plus very short walking distance to train L line. The apartment is large, very private, with fabulous deck, and it came with everything (and beyond) of what a casual traveler could possibly need during the in in NY. It's very quiet, and in hot summer, one can really appreciate quiet and efficient air conditioner units with remote controls. The kitchen is fabulous and well stocked.
Hannah is extremely helpful and quick communicating. She responds back right away.
All in all, - see you, Hannah, again on our next trip to visit NY!
The reservation was canceled 154 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
Just spend 6 nights in this perfect apartment with my husband and mother in law. We really got everything we asked for! Everything felt so clean and fresh. You get so much more than staying in a hotel. The cozy deck is really a bonus. Hannah was really helpful and responded to my emails in a few minutes. We've got absolutely nothing to complain about.
We were so happy to stay in Williamsburg. This quiet great area is relaxing after a hectic day and we had both good food and drinks in some of the nice restaurants near by.
We can most definitely recommend this place. If we are, or when we are, returning to New York this is the place to return to.
Hannah's apartment is very comfortable, nicely decorated and clean, and very well-equipped. We stayed there for a week with our seven year-old son and it really felt like home. The deck (which is pretty rare for a NY apartment) is nice for having a meal or just relaxing.
The location is great too: on a quiet residential street, but in the middle of Willliamsburg with plenty of restaurants, cafes, stores, and coffee shops just a few steps away. The L line subway stop is also very close by: it will take you to Manhattan in about five minutes, very convenient!
Hannah even left us some essentials in the fridge when we arrived, which was handy after the flight, and it made is feel very welcome. Thank you Hannah, we would love to come back!
Hannah's place was perfect—very convenient to all of Williamsburg and lower Manhattan. The street is quiet, but close to lots of cute local cafés and shops. Everything we needed and more was provided—we were even able to stay caught up on Game of Thrones! Our favorite feature was the lovely and quiet deck in the back of the house, where we had a relaxing breakfast before checking out. Thanks Hannah!
What an apartment! Absolutely everything has been considered.. so extremely clean and cosy & Hannah, so generous with goodies in the cupboards and fridge. As with everyone else who has reviewed this wonderful apartment, it seems we all agree..just the best! One question.. Where were those skunks hiding? would loved to have seen them !
Dealing with Hannah was a wonderful experience! Everything was superbly organized and handled extremely professionally, but the experience felt very personal at the same time. This however is only part of the story. This apartment is conveniently located, extremely clean, cozy and just simply wonderful! Given an opportunity I would definitely consider staying there again and again!
Great place to stay - clean and bright. Sitting outside on the deck in the sunshine will be most memorable. Check out the cheese and other goodies at the little shop at the end of the street. Gimmie Coffee was also just around the corner from Hannah's place ....
