The Space

The "Triangle" is a contemporary 1200 square foot home, just a two minute walk to the ocean and fifteen minute walk to Kehena black sand beach. We are just as close to "Kalani Oceanside Retreat", where you can dine, dance, yoga, or get great massages. Ocean Spirit is set in an ever blooming beautiful garden of palms, hibiscus, boganvillia, coconuts, papaya, and banana trees, etc. The house is literally a three sided triangle building, with walls of windows, looking out to the garden and sea. Six large timer ceiling fans keep you quite comfortable. The sun streams through stained glass windows in the morning which is quite magical. A dedicated WiFi will keep you entertained and in touch with the outside world. The triangle has an open floor plan, and works well for intimate groups and large families. The bathrooms are downstairs, one inside and one outside just off of the patio. Both have walk in shower. The inside bath is beautifully done in imported Balinese river rock, glass brick, and finished with Italian mosaic tiles. while the outside bathe is all done in bamboo and stained concrete. The upper floor has one queen size futon, two twin beds, one double futon, two full fold down couches, as well as a spacious sitting area with a LED flatsceen TV with ROKU(Netflix, Youtube, etc., and a DVD player.

The first floor has a fully equipped kitchenette with fullsize refrigerator, two induction cooktops, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, pots and pans, plateware, silverware, kitchen utensils , with dining area, a Queen bed and Queen futon. The Triangle can sleep up to twelve with capacity of three queen three full and two twin beds total. There is a washing machine, soap etc. and lines for drying at your disposal by request.

Guest Access

A landline telephone with free calling out to the US and Canada is available on the 1st floor. A shared gas barbecue grill, table, and lounge chairs are located in the grass courtyard. The flatsceen TV has ROKU so you can watch Netflix, Amazon, Youtube videos, and more.

A washing machine With soaps, folding table and lines for drying. Ask for a time

For assistance at anytime call Michael the onsite Innkeeper at (phone number hidden). Leave a message and someone will get back shortly. In an emergency dial 911.

Interaction with Guests

Having had luck with AirBnB's wonderful guests, we are blessed to have you stay here with us. It is my and Michaels' goal to interact as much (or as little) with you as is necessary, and hope our relationship is fun, informative and mutually beneficial. No more and no less.

The Neighborhood

Here is a recent quote from one of our guests:

"This is probably the coolest house in the coolest neighborhood on the Big Island. You'll be in the Seaview neighborhood, a block from the lava rock shore. Seaview is filled with friendly island folks and retired hippies who say "Aloha" when they pass you, and most everyone knows the Triangle House complex. Some people know it as the " Cheese House," because it looks like a wedge of Swiss cheese lying on its side, with each stained glass window a hole. You're living in a gorgeous jungle, with great ocean access, a plethora of interesting artists, and alternative living folk, with the best neighborhood spirit I've seen. Every Wednesday, practically the whole community of the Puna district ends up at a bazaar on the edge of civilization where the 1970 lava flow literally rolled over the city of Kalapana, called "Uncle Roberts at the End of the Road." I don't know a better way to say hello to a new community than that. Randall is a great owner/manager. He's a craftsman who cares a lot about the building, and has improved its' initial design for the people who stay in it. MIchael, the onsite Innkeeper, is super easy to work with. He's been doing constant gardening and upkeep on the property. It was designed by an architect who had a dream about "round holes and square pegs" and designed a property with a Triangle house, a Rectangle house, a Circle shaped water catchment, and two Square sheds. There's also a real life castle one block away. It's like living in a dream."

Getting Around

There is very limited public transportation here. A bus to and from Pahoa town, and/or Hilo city runs through the area only one block away, but only twice a day. It is definitely suggest that you rent a vehicle for your commute, but more daring folks will hitchhike or walk. Hitchhiking is technically illegal, but is not frowned upon by most locals.

Other Things to Note

Please visit (website hidden), and (website hidden) for a very good list of the events happening within the immediate area.

Kehena black sand beach is only 15 minutes of walking away.

Nearby natural hot springs and tide pools offer awesome snorkeling, soaking and swimming in safe warm water, right at the ocean's edge. You can explore the old Hawaiian town of Pahoa a twenty minutes drive away with its wooden board walks, many restaurants, and markets.

Kalani Ocean side retreat is just a short walk or two minute drive away offering meals, massages and use of their pools and sauna for very reasonable rates.

The neighbors and "locals" in Kalapana Sea View as well as the surrounding areas are relaxed, helpful, and friendly, and I have found, will always give excellent tips on the best current things to do in the local area. So don't be afraid to schmooze a little.

At the southwest end of 137, the Red Road, you will find the Kaimu Corner Kountry Store, with most eveything you need locally, beer, food, wine, groceries, local produce and meat. AND don't miss Uncle Robert's Awa Bar and Club next door for a unique island experience filled with music, dance, food and local crafts on Wednesdays nights, with a smaller version of the market Saturday mornings. Kanaka music nights happen on Friday and Saturday evenings.

We can also offer local guide services to show you into the hard to get to and little-known killer spots for very reasonable rates. Rates will vary depending on group size, transportation, difficulty, outfitting and duration. Please feel free to inquire.

We also offer pickup at the Hilo airport for $45 for up to three people and light luggage.

House Rules

But, briefly, there is Absolutely No Smoking, candles, incense, or any combustibles INSIDE the buildings. Unfortunately, if you are found to do so you repeatedly, will forfeit your entire deposit and be asked to leave.

We follow Hawai'ian traditions, so be nice to the floors and take off your shoes, and go barefoot when entering. Composting and recycling are also habits we Big Islanders consider traditions. Please participate with us.

We have private water catchment, so please conserve water when possible. Though it is treated, sediment and charcoal filtered, it is not cerified public drinking water. Bringing your own is highly suggested.

This community observes the "Dark Sky" policy to maintain stunning night sky viewing. Please keep interior and exterior lighting to a minimum. The more lights on at night, the more BUGS and MOSQUITOS are likely to get inside to YOU.

Do not move or rearrange the heavy furniture we bill for floor scratches/gouges and the extra help to put it back the way it was.

It can become windy and rainy almost anytime and often does. ALWAYS close all labeled windows whenever leaving the house.

It's a quiet and peaceful neighborhood and there are often other guests, please observe neighborhood quiet times (10:00 pm to 8:00 am).
