The "Triangle" is a contemporary 1200 square foot home, just a two minute walk to the ocean and ten minute walk to Kehena black sand beach. We are just as close to "Kalani Oceanside Retreat", where you can dine, dance or get great massages. It is set in an ever blooming beautiful garden of palms, hibiscus, boganvillia, etc. The house is literally a three sided building, with walls of windows, looking out to the garden and sea. Six large ceiling fans, keep you quite comfortable. The sun streams through stained glass windows,in the morning, quite magical. Free WiFi will keep you as in touch with the outside world. The triangle has an open floor plan, and works well for groups and large families. The bathroom is downstairs with a large walk in shower. It is beautifully done in imported Balinese river rock, glass brick and finished with Italian mosaic tiles. The upper floor has one queen size bed, one double futon, one queen fold out futons, and one futon one the floor as well as a spacious sitting area with TV that can be used in conjunction with VCR/DVD. Nearby natural hot springs and tide pools offer awesome snorkeling, soaking and swimming in safe warm water, right at the ocean's edge. Kalani Ocean side retreat is just a short walk or two minute drive away offering meals, massages and use of there pools and sauna for very reasonable rates.
The County operated bus service "Hele-On" stops one block away twice daily.
The neighbors and "locals" in Kalapana Sea View as well as the surrounding areas are relaxed, helpful, and friendly, and I have found, they will always give excellent tips on the best current things to do in the local area. So don't be afraid to schmooze a little. And don't miss Uncle Robert's at the West end of the road for a unique island experience filled with music, dance, food and local crafts on Wednesdays and music on friday and Saturday evenings. And Sea-View's very own crafts, food and farmers market every Saturday morning, the Pahoa market on Friday and the Maku'u Market on Sunday.

This is probably the coolest house in the coolest neighborhood on the big island. You'll be in Seaview, a block from the lavarock shore. Seaview is filled with friendly island hippies who say hi when they pass you, and everyone knows the Triangle House. Some people know it as the "Cheese House," because it looks like a wedge of swiss cheese lying on its side, with each window a porthole.
This is my favorite neighborhood in the 4 that I've stayed at on the big island (kailua-kona/captain cook, hilo, volcano/mt view, na'alehu/ocean view). You're living in a gorgeous jungle, with great ocean access, a plethora of interesting artists and hippies, and the best neighborhood spirit I've seen. Every wednesday, the whole community of the Puna district ends up at a fair on the edge of civilization where the 1970 lava flow literally rolled over the city of Kalapana, called "Uncle Roberts at the End of the Road." I don't know a better way to say hello to a new community than that.
Randall is a great host. He's a craftsman who cares a lot about the building, and is trying to improve its design for the people who stay in it. He's super easy to work with. He's been doing constant work on the property. It was designed by an architect who had a dream about "round holes and square pegs" and designed a property with a Triangle house, a Rectangle house, a Circle water catchman, and two Square sheds. There's also a real-life castle next-door. It's like living in a dream.
This is a beautiful house, and provided lots of places to sleep. We enjoyed getting up early and walking to the ocean 2 blocks away to enjoy the sunrise and watch for whales. We also loved the Sat. Am Space market which was in the same neighborhood. Randall was helpful on fulfilling request. We did find the kitchen area and stove a bit small and slow to heat up for making a real meal "at home".
Overall the house was lovely and met our needs.
We had a wonderful stay. Just wonderful.
The house is spacious, comfortable, clean and very modern. It is artistically decorated. We had plenty of space for 5 people. There are plenty of fans, and windows cross ventilate. We where never hot. Randall was just next door, and always available.
Kitchenette has everything to make simple meals. Nice coffee maker.
Location is excellent. We loved being close to one of the most wonderful black sand beaches. It is great for swimming, body surfing, or meeting the quiet sunrise with your loved one. You can walk there or take a 3 minute car ride and then climb down to a very secluded area. The view from the front of the village is awesome as well, if you do not want to climb down.
You will be right next to a yoga retreat. Taking a day class is easy, and meeting good people there is wonderful. You will be pleasantly surprised by a weekend market. Plan your trip so you can attend. Taking to good people there, having good food and mingling was wonderful.
Go to listen to live Hawaiian music at the bar (about 7 minutes drive), drink cava, share ice cream or take a ride with local kids on skate boards down the steep hill. A 7 year old taught me how. He said to turn it just like a surf board.
Puna is an excellent area. The house is a wonderful base to explore it. We hope to return soon.
My wife and I really enjoyed Randall's Triangle House.
The most important thing I want to point out is that the house is 100% identical as how it looks in the pictures and that Randall is a great host.
Warm ponds, black sand beaches, farmer's market, spa and restaurants are all within a few minutes ride by car.
Really enjoyed my stay at the Triangle house! It's as unique as it looks, the pics don't really do it justice as there are art pieces in every nook and corner that were a true delight. Very nice outdoor patio & dining table with pleasing landscaping as well.
Ceiling fans & numerous windows provided plenty of airflow and nice breezes. A variety of places to sleep and relax, though on hot days you'll want to explore outside. For this part of the island, convenient location to experience a little of everything - Kehena Beach and Kalani resort are within walking distance. Kapoho tide pools, Isaac Hale and MacKenzie beach parks are just a short drive away. Good snorkeling, but not a lot of swimming nearby unless you are a strong swimmer, and even then, be mindful of local conditions, especially at Kehena.
The drive on the Red Road is gorgeous, I was in a very small rental car but recommend a car with a little height off the ground to clear lava rock in parking areas. Wed night farmer's market at the end of the Red Road is a can't miss, with live music, a huge array of food, and a true Aloha spirit.
Randall was very friendly and helpful. I found all the locals to be welcoming, respectful and relaxed. This is a "no stress" area, not touristy at all, very laid back - it's a good place to come to totally disconnect from the "busy, busy" vibe of the mainland. Internet connection is spotty, recommend posting pics and such while you're in Hilo, which is a straight-forward and easy 1-hr drive, and worth it, especially to see the Hawaiian Botanical Garden and Volcano National Park.
Kitchen is compact and basic, but surprisingly effective given the wide array of local fruit, veggies, eggs and bread available. Randall had a big basket of fruit for me when I arrived, you can find local sellers along the road and there are numerous farmer's markets in the area. This food was amazing, it's so fresh you will taste the difference instantly. Randall also installed a washer nearby, things air-dry quickly. You're in a nice house, but it's basically in a tropical jungle setting, so expect a few insects and geckos around, sudden rainstorms, and the sounds of birds and frogs ever-present, especially at night. Stars at night are epic, and that's because it's very dark - don't plan on driving late at night on the Red Road. Very quiet in the neighborhood, this is a place to come to relax. A variety of local activities can be found on the newsletter Puna Happenings - I tried a little of everything, from meditation to hiking to ocean activities.
I had two guests join me at different times - surprising amount of privacy between upstairs and downstairs
If you want a different experience from stuffy 5-star hotels and the tourist trap, I highly recommend the Triangle House
The triangle house was such a cool space; really unique design and all around super fun place to spend some time in. We drove up in the middle of the night and were dismayed at how far it was from Hilo/Pahoa, but were pleasantly surprised to find, in the morning, just how central it was to a lot of really cool activities/things to see. For example, Kehena black sands beach, Ahalanui volcano pool, the tide pools, Uncle Robert's wednesday night shindig... all so close and all so much fun! Had a really fun time and were sad to leave. One thing to note -- and this is not a criticism of the place but just a qualifying statement -- the setup really is for a group of people, it is ideal as such. There is space (and beds) for 12 to sleep. If just two people, you might find other places more cost effective. But, of course, that's totally up to you! Highly recommend the triangle house.
The house was a delight to arrive to. There were five of us staying for 3 nights and we found it to be spacious and comfortable, built with quality materials and easy to find. This is a residential area and nights were quiet and restful. There isn't a grocery store nearby and the kitchen is lightweight so be prepared for that. If you like to snorkel bring your own gear, the tide pools and black sand beach are within reasonable driving distance. We took one leisurely day to drive up to Volcano and back.
Fantastic rental in an excellent location. Bottom of kalapana subdivision with good ocean views and access. Beautiful area to explore and a well appointed and unique house to return to after a busy days activities. Note that patio space is shared with adjoining rental house. Not a problem for us but might be for others.
The place was awesome, no tub just shower, had some beach stuff like towels, beach bags, also lot sof extra bedding, could accomodate a lot of people if you don't mind an open flooe plan. excellent location
We were looking for a spot that would be away from tourists and close enough to beauty on Hawaii... and this house was just what it promised to be. Quiet and in style, enough place for a family, kitchen is smaller then I expected, but it might have been a good thing anyway - I didn't cook dinners and we enjoyed outing.
If you don't mind driving 10-15 miles to the closest shopping and don't want people around - this house is your choice.
Check Elaine's site for local activities - very good and truthful description.
For my family it was perfect vacation, wish you all the same
Thank you Elaine
