Keep it clean....
My husband and I stayed at Yusuf and Kim's place for 8 days. The hosts took a very hands-off approach so we did not get to interact with them very much; they were present when we arrived and then each stopped by separately once mid-week for a quick check-in, but did make themselves available over the phone for any questions we had. The location of the home was great, allowing access to a supermarket where we got many delicious ready-made meals and nearby a bus stop where we could get rides to almost anywhere on the Island. However, several aspects of the home were not the best fit for us: the bed was very hard and the fan was definitely not enough for comfortable sleep. In addition, although the home is located off a main road, it was not as quiet as other reviews indicated. Many people seemed to zoom by in their cars outside the neighborhood and street sellers passing by would loudly shout. On average we woke up at 6 or 7am, which was not ideal for a relaxing vacation. While it was nice to have a backyard, it is unfinished, housing a shack of scrap materials, and contains no usable chairs to sit in. The floor inside the home is a floor tile sticker material, lifting up around the edges and giving the home a neglected feel. The drawers in the kitchen are difficult to open and appeared unclean, with scraps of paper and dust in them. As a result, the overall condition of the house was actually a bit disappointing. I think it would not have been a problem if our stay had been shorter, since we tried to spend as much time away from the house as possible, but having a longer trip meant that prolonged exposure the living conditions affected us more negatively. To clarify, we are used to staying in hotels when we travel and wanted to try something different, which obviously didn't turn out for the best, but if you are accustomed to staying in hostels then "roughing it out" in a place with only basic amenities like this one would probably not be a challenge.
When people come to your home and pretend to love your home and surroundings.
This is the first Guess that found themselves in our PRIVATE storage room for what they did not put down. That area of our yard is where we store our plastic bottles "from the guest" metal cans & some of our garden tools. Why were they snooping around in there?
And would smile with you.
We gave them our Landline number and our cell number, they already had the email address. We called to make sure as usual that our guest is taken care of, they NEVER called us once. We didn't think anything of that, we thought they were having a good time and enjoying the Island. We know that some guest like to be private. We took time out and came over to the house to Angelica & Shamim to make suggestions on the best places to eat and site see here in Barbados.
And we would always ask what else can we do for you today?
And they told us what they wanted and we made sure that we went out of our way, using our time & money to make sure our guest were comfortable by presenting what they ask of us, then to see what was written about our generosity was amazing.
Hosting guest, some people would call or email us to let us know what they need. IT GOES BOTH WAYS. Balancing communication is key. We would say hosting guest for the past few years we have done an excellent job.
Our home is beautiful, clean & simple. Our cupboards were given clean and spotless. The first to drawers contained cutlery and the third one with shopping bags. And the others was SEALED shut with our personal belongings. This seem like a personal vendetta, it seem like you guys own Hotels.
Once again you're the first guest after hosting over 75+ guest having over 53 positive reviews to complain about a "fan" all of this complaining more seems to be more personal than having anything to do with our home. Only both of you would know what's inside you hearts.
Our floor is solid wall and have a Caribbean material that we have been using for Generations, which was put down only a few weeks ago & was admired by the guest before you. Why pretend and say you love our home when deep within you were lying. Some people have not learnt yet to appreciate other people's space and the design of other houses. Why not be honest in the beginning or even when we had call many times and ask, is there anything that we can do for you?
There is some guess that came to our location and would be honest in their opinions of our home and would make suggestions instead of pretending. These are the type of people that we can respect. So to other Host be aware of pretenders like Angelica & Shamim. Why would Shamim tell Yusuf "I appreciate your hospitality and home and definitely would send some of my friends to stay at our house". It seems to us the more we think about it the problem was Angelica. This couple is the first guess that we had in 3-4yrs hosting with Airbnb that ever had anything to say about "ah bed" craziness. Why haven't the previous guest mentioned anything along those lines by now?
Maybe again it was more personal.......
Our kitchen amenities have Fridge,Stove,Toaster Oven,Coffee Percolator,Pots,Pans,Kettle and a good dose of HONESTY: meaning we always ask our guess what else can we bring for you to make your stay more comfortable.
Some hotels do not even have a Fridge or a Stove. We did our research.
We don't think it is good for dishonest persons to come into your house because it is not a hotel, it is much more than that.
Our lesson in hosting Angelica & Shamim is clear, they are great actors that think that they are more and better than anyone else. That's why it was mention that they stayed in ''Hotels''
Our neighborhood is not noisy like New York. The Vendor is the Neighbourhood Fruit Vender. Maybe it would've been best to come out and enjoy some local fruit and appreciate the neighborhood.
What you say about others will be at your door step.
APPRECIATION IS YOUR LESSON.....
Yusuf is the kind of person anyone can feel fortunate enough to meet due to his obvious depth of character. He greeted us on arrival and was always available to give us advice on logistics and key spots in lovely Barbados. Due to the basic facilities, this place is suitable for experienced travellers and backpackers who want to get a local feel for the island and stay in a non-touristy neighborhood. If someone stays in the place next door you might not feel as private since there is only a partition door separating the two sides of the house. The beach is walking distance and the supermarket is close too. All buses run very close so getting around is easy and Yusuf's cool friend Junior is available to cab you around if needed. Would recommend bringing a mosquito net and beach umbrella. Never leave belongings unattended on beach and you'll enjoy the wonderful Bajan people and island paradise of Barbados just as we did for a week. Try the awesome reggae buses!
Me and my husband stayed At universal Chattel House Apt1 for eight (8) nights on January. Everything went well and we felt that we had our own peace even other side of the house is occupied.
One fan was enough and the house wasn't too hot at nighttime.
Electricity tension wasn't enough for our Apple macbook computer, but our phones charged just fine.
The garden at backyard was lovely and the neighbours friendly.
The location is very good, near bus stops, quiet and big supermarket Carlton is near and open at good hours.
Yusuf and Kim welcome us in their beautiful chattel house and we spent there 10 days.
We really loved the private garden! Fresh golden apples were waiting for us every morning!
The house is tiny and warm..with lots of colors and really comfortable bed!
The close huge supermarket has everything that you'll need during the stay! Also the open air market of Bridgetown is quite close and you'll find fresh wonderful fruits and vegetables!
We enjoyed so much living in that area for a while..far from the busy touristic place..but close to really friendly local people!
Yusuf and Kim are open minded, helpful and touching..we'd love to spend more time with theme..we will next time ;)
Yusuf and Kim were both very helpful and hospitable and generous in offering us a free upgrade in accommodation because of a confusion when we first arrived. There would have been some basic kitchen equipment such as a kettle, matches, fire extinguisher, toaster, microwave that would have been very good to have. The location of this residence was excellent for both the University and the beach, with a good supermarket at the end of the road.
Yusuf and Kim were friendly, kind and generous hosts. They were communicative and answered my questions before and during my stay, and were very forthcoming with suggestions on things to do and experience during my stay.
The apartment was simple but is truly astounding value, and has everything you need for your Barbados holiday including a private bathroom, fridge, cooking facilities, and plenty of room. Only a minute from the bus stop where you can catch the local bus to Bridgetown or Speightstown, and a very short walk from the supermarket which is great for grabbing breakfast, drinks and snacks. Brandons Beach and Brighton Beach are a 10-15 minute walk away, and are some of the most lovely beach spots on the south west coast! Yusuf was kind enough to arrange a private car service to the airport for me, which was great. They can even arrange a massage for you - sadly I ran out of time to do this. On my final night Yusuf and Kim even brought me a fresh local mango as a taste of Barbados!
I had a great time staying here and would definitely recommend for 1-2 people looking to have a laid back stay in Barbados. My only word of warning is that the apartment is a little far from the nightlife if you are looking for some wild nights out in St Lawrence gap - and therefore a bit harder to get to/from (or more costly in a taxi). If you're more about the beaches then it's just right :) Happy holidaying!
