Staying in da surf shak is quite an experience. We definitely enjoyed it but it's not your average room. Steven provided us a very easy check-in and was very helpful. Da surf shak is a cosy place, right in the jungle with comfortable bedding. Keep in mind there is no electricity, it's not 100% closed (although completely covered) and the composting toilet is quite hard to reach.
It's definitely adventure, but we loved it.
Steven was incredibly kind and let us shower in his house.
Da Surf Shak has a very outdoorsy feel to it so I'm glad we're used to camping. Just remember that it has an outdoor compost toilet and no electricity. We definitely enjoyed the jungle atmosphere and privacy. Steven was a very cool, nice host to talk to.
The Surf Shack is great value for your money (you get two bunk beds and a bed "upstairs" where a couple can sleep).
The fresh fruit were delicious
The hosts were very friendly and helpful. When I stopped for a shower or to recharge an electronic device at the pineapple house I always enjoyed a chat with them and their fresh smoothies were delightful.
Just remember that the Surf Shack is a very nice cabin with great beds (no sleeping bags required) but with no electricity, water etc.and you will have a great time.
You will have jungle sounds all night which is in my opinion much better than the sound of traffic which is completely absent in this area.
I really enjoyed Steven's surf shak! I like the open design of the room, which has enough space to fit in four people. Steve is a nice guy and offered us papaya and banana smoothies when we stopped by at his place in the morning! The Shak is clean, surrounded by trees with absulute privacy and quietness. Awesom sky at night.
We absolutely enjoyed our one night at Da Surf Shak. Since it is mainly a place to sleep, Steven and Diana kindly offered for us to have a shower at The Pineapple House (a great feeling after 4 days in Volcanoes National Park with no showers). We had fun chatting with them that night. They even gave us some papaya, avocado and bananas from their backyard (super delicious for breakfast!!!). Also, the town of Pahoa is very lively and unique. Would definitely recommend Steven's place to anyone who wants something simple and authentic. Although I don't know why I imaged this place was near the ocean, it is not, but it's about a 20 min. drive away.
We enjoyed our stay at da surf shack! We were comfortable, it was clean, and it was peaceful. Steven was very kind and helpful! We will always go back to this place!
Steven and Diana were really nice hosts! The Da Surf Shak was very cute and clean.
Fun place to stay!!
Cool, calm, cozy and easy on the wallet. Da Shack is definitely a rustic experience, but still maintains a nice level of comfort. Great for the traveler that is out a lot enjoying all of the awesome things to do in the area. It's a nice place to come back and rest. It also sleeps 3! Steven is a great and accommodating host. Ill definitely be back.
We were not able to reach him personally. His phone did not work and he replied 1 week later to our emails. We were obligated to rent another hotel for the two days we had booked with him. Very disapointed. Would not recomend.
Matthieu never arrived, nor did I receive any phone calls. I emailed him and he never arrived as scheduled. The telephone number he listed on airbnb was not in service: This is the last email I received from him: "hello steven! just to let you know that we will be arriving at around 730 tonight! we have limited access to our emails but i will receive any message you send through airbnb Matt" This rating is completely out of character, I am taken aback that Matthieu would not be truthful, and rest assured I am a great host!.
