Why not have a relaxing holiday in this beautiful sympathetically restored Traditional Thatch Cottage, dating back to around the 16th/17th Century making the central rooms of the cottage as much as 400 years old!
Great care has been taken to keep the character of the cottage. The thick stone and mud walls are wonderfully uneven with little nooks and crannys for books and lanterns. Two lower than average doors (leading off the oldest room in the house) still hang on their original hinges. The sash windows with their deep window cills, flagstone floors, the old hobs by the fire with rare wattle and daub hood, together with the original oak beams, complete the picture. The cottage is set in totally private grounds, at the end of a private country lane about 3 miles outside the small market town of Mountrath.
This cottage really has the WOW factor.
The accommodation offers, 2 double bedrooms, 1 with original oak beams, bathroom with shower head attachment to bath, character living room with original oak beams and fireplace with turf burning stove, kitchen/diner with all mod cons ie. dish washer. electric ovens/gas hobs, microwave & fridge/freezer. Utility room with washing machine. Oil fired heating through out. However you will need to light the stove in the living room in the evenings during the colder months of the year. With the very high ceiling in this room that extra bit of heat is sometimes needed to keep everything cosy (especially if you are coming from a warmer climate than ours!) The cottage also offers FREE WIFI.
Lovely rural location, nearest town with mini supermarkets, butcher, shops, take aways, postoffice = 3 miles.
County town with bars, restaurants, supermarkets, shops, banks = 7 miles.

Although the cottage location is rural and private it is not isolated. It's in the heart of a traditional farming community with the family farm just a few minutes walk away.
Just 15min drive from the lovely Slieve Bloom mountains with popular outdoor activities: walking, horse riding, fishing & golf. Or just take a picnic and relax by a mountain stream.

The cottage has been built on a southfacing slope which means there are some steps both inside and out which may present a challange for people with limited mobility.

We had a very enjoyable stay. The house is amazing and beautifully decorated. We could have spent our whole holiday in the house because it was so unique. It was well equipped and kept very clean. We would highly recommend it to anyone interested in staying in an authentic thatched cottage.
Just stayed at Hawthorn Cottage for a week and it was brilliant. Cottage is beautiful with fantastic garden. Mary & Dee couldn't be more helpful. Can't wait to go back!!
We had a wonderful stay at Dee's cottage. It truly is breathtaking when you first arrive, the cottage has a beautiful thatched roof and is in stunning surroundings. Inside is even better with amazing decor and a real home from home feel. The cottage was perfectly clean too and very welcoming. Dee's mum Mary was kind enough to meet us and give us a quick talk through the cottage which was great. Hawthorn cottage was the perfect base for touring Ireland, and it was super handy having a selection of maps and tourist leaflets in the cottage too, we left a few guides that we picked up for future guests. I would highly recommend a trip to this quaint little cottage. Dee was also great to deal with, any queries were quickly answered prior to booking and thereafter. We will be back! Thanks
Great location, fantastic cottage, wonderful experience outstanding value for money. Would recommend it and would stay there again.
Our stay at Hawthorn Cottage was like a dream come true.Centrally located we were able to take day trips in all directions and then have a modern 400 year old cottage to return to in the evenings to relax and enjoy.Dee's parents,Mary and John, were simply delightful even extending their own hospitality to our wives while my brother-in -law and I played golf at the local golf course. Secluded but easily accessible we found quiet that made Ireland even fonder to our hearts. We will always remember Hawthorn Cottage and would recommend it highly to anyone wishing Irish serenity.
Dee's cottage was a great place to stay. Just tucked away enough from the main drag—though there isn't really such a thing for miles around!—it's huge, authentic and in immaculate condition, with all the amenities and cottage-like accoutrements you could ever need. The garden is large, well-kept and watched over by at least one friendly hare. On leaving Ireland we regretted that we hadn't planned enough time to just enjoy the cottage itself.
A wonderful stay, and Dee and her mum are helpful, communicative hosts.
We toured the west coast for 5 days and then finally settled into the cottage for a week to complete our honeymoon. Of all the places we stayed along the way, nothing felt like home like Dee's home.
Mary met us on arrival and was on hand throughout the week, which was reassuring in itself, and the house had the perfect combination of 'mod-cons' and traditional features to be comfortable and cosy. The garden was a pleasure to sit out in and the peat fire welcome for nights in.
From the cottage we went for several walks in the nearby mountains, and visited Cork, Kilkenny, Athlone and Dublin on day trips, each between 1-2 hour's drive.
There's plenty more from us and many others in the guestbook on the coffee table; we recommend you go and have a read!
This is simply an incredible place to stay. We spent two nights here and were sad to leave!! The pictures really don't do justice to how quaint and tranquil and relaxing the cottage is. Dee has done an amazing job of restoring the place - the kitchen is fantastic, the grounds are immaculate, everything is just perfect. And Dee is as good of a host as you could hope for! We'd stay there again in a heartbeat.
Staying at Thatch cottage combines the magical experience of living in a genuine Irish cottage with modern conveniences and comfort. It's located in a charming farming community nestled away on it's own hillside surrounded by trees. The garden is lovely with rolling green grass, beautiful flowers, a serene pond to sip tea by, and a small vegetable patch. It's only an hour away from Dublin airport and centrally located making days trips in any direction easy, although we weren't always eager to leave the cottage because we enjoyed its uniqueness and serenity. Port Laoise is approximately 20 minutes away and is a convenient place to purchase groceries. Dee is an amazing host! She put together a folder of directions and information tailored to our interests and was helpful in anything we needed. Thank you, Dee!
Wow! what a delightful cottage, it was so full of character and original features and so pretty on the outside. We had such a relaxing time, the cottage is set in a lovely garden (with a pond) which is so secluded and quiet with no neighbours yet surprisingly easy to find. Dee and Mary (her mother) were extremely helpful and gave lots of local information which proved useful. We enjoyed a lovely walk in the Slieve Bloom Mountains and discovered the Glenbarrow Waterfall!
The cottage made the perfect weekend getaway.
A great place to stay!
