Why not have a relaxing holiday in this beautiful sympathetically restored Traditional Thatch Cottage, dating back to around the 16th/17th Century making the central rooms of the cottage as much as 400 years old!
Great care has been taken to keep the character of the cottage. The thick stone and mud walls are wonderfully uneven with little nooks and crannys for books and lanterns. Two lower than average doors (leading off the oldest room in the house) still hang on their original hinges. The sash windows with their deep window cills, flagstone floors, the old hobs by the fire with rare wattle and daub hood, together with the original oak beams, complete the picture. The cottage is set in totally private grounds, at the end of a private country lane about 3 miles outside the small market town of Mountrath.
This cottage really has the WOW factor.
The accommodation offers, 2 double bedrooms, 1 with original oak beams, bathroom with shower over bath bath, character living room with original oak beams and fireplace with turf burning stove, kitchen/diner with all mod cons ie. dish washer. electric ovens/gas hobs, microwave & fridge/freezer. Utility room with washing machine. Oil fired heating through out. However you will need to light the stove in the living room in the evenings during the colder months of the year. With the very high ceiling in this room that extra bit of heat is sometimes needed to keep everything cosy (especially if you are coming from a warmer climate than ours!) The cottage also offers FREE WIFI.
Lovely rural location, nearest town with mini supermarkets, butcher, shops, take aways, postoffice = 3 miles.
County town with bars, restaurants, supermarkets, shops, banks = 7 miles.
Nearest motorway junction 7 miles.
Nearest railway station 7 miles.
Although the cottage location is rural and private it is not isolated. It's in the heart of a traditional farming community with the family farm just a short distance away.
Just 15min drive from the lovely Slieve Bloom mountains with popular outdoor activities: walking, horse riding, fishing & golf. Or just take a picnic and relax by a mountain stream.
About 1 hours drive from Dublin airport.
The cottage has been built on a southfacing slope which means there are some steps both inside and out which may present a challange for people with limited mobility.
Not suitable for children.
Sorry no pets.

The cottage is normally let as a 2 bedroom accommodation suitable for up to 4 people. However the cottage can take a maximum of 6 people as there is an additional twin room which can be made available upon request when making your booking, for only €20 per night.

The hawthorn cottage is a brilliant Air BnB experience. The house is really well presented and has everything you need for a very comfortable stay. The communication with Dee and her mother is excellent and very quick to reply and answer any questions. We stayed for EP and it was perfect, about 25 mins drive away and Declan Hanly taxi were a great service and very reasonable price. Highly recommended for every aspect

Centrally located to all of the must-see sites in Southern Ireland, Hawthorne Cottage is a hidden gem in the Irish countryside. Our family of four had plenty of space for relaxing. We were able to pick some rhubarb from Dee's beautiful garden. We would love to stay at Hawthorne Cottage again!

Our host Dee gave us all the information we needed :) The directions were perfect. We were met by Mary, Dee's Mum and she was brilliant. Mary showed us around and explained how everything worked etc. there is also a black book with lots of ideas on where to go and how to get there. The cottage is bigger than the pictures look and a total gem. Dee has put in so much love and care into the property it oozes charm. The cottage's underfloor heating keeps all the rooms very warm and there is also a turf, potbellied stove which gives out more heat than you could imagine. The bed clothes and towels were excellent quality and very clean and smelt beautiful. The kitchen is very well stocked and the cooker is a joy to use. The garden and surrounding area is very quiet and peaceful. You are not overlooked and there is no passing traffic. We were there in Autumn and the Autumn colours were outstanding. It was an honour to stay in Deirdres' stunning thatched cottage with its soothing atmosphere and inspiring decoration. Its is in easy reach of so many fantastic places. Thank you so much.

We had a great time at Hawtorne Cottage celebrating my mother in laws 60th birthday. The cottage is secluded but with easy access to restaurants, pubs and shops by car. The cottage definitely lives up to the photos on the website with a beautiful garden and impressive interior design. The 'black book' available in the cottage provided great guidance to the area and we were tried everything from a pint of Guinness at Morrisey, western trail riding at fossey mountain springs ranch to a spectacular dinner at durrow castle. It was really easy to communicate with Dee and Mary and we would definitely love to come back. Highly recommend renting this thatched cottage for an escape to the country side.

We had a wonderful stay in Dee's cottage. The location is perfect if you want peace and quiet. The cottage has a beautiful backyard with a pond where you can relax. The little towns nearby are quite quaint and the people are very friendly. If you have a car, you can drive pretty much anywhere within the south-east or south-west of Ireland between 1 to 2 hours drive...this was perfect for us, we wanted to drive around a little everyday. The interior of the cottage is beautifully restored and decorated. We would highly recommend this place, we loved it!

I simply cannot praise this cottage enough! We were warmly welcomed by Dee's wonderful Mum Mary and were shown around the beautiful cottage that was clean, spacious, welcoming and everything you could want from a holiday let. The area is beautiful and really helps you get away from it all. The cottage is extremely comfortable and there is plenty of space, the kitchen is well equipped and I would love to stay here again. 5 stars? this is a 7 star experience!!

Hi my name is Dee and I am listing this lovely 'Thatch Cottage' located in Ireland.
I love travel, meeting new people, hill walking, crafts, art, gardening, floppy eared rabbits and dogs (not necessarily in that order) but what I love most of all is to renovate particular old buildings. My thatch cottage -which in its former life was a busy farmhouse- turned out to be a real labour of love. I had to rescue it from becoming a ruin....and it took nearly 4 years, on and off, to get the cottage & the garden to the condition you see in the photos today. After all the toil and trouble, I now love to sit in the living room (which was the old farmhouse kitchen) on a chilly evening with my feet up in front of the turf fire gazing up at the bog oak beams wondering what life was like for the person who carved them 400 years ago....and wonder about his decendants who can't have been very tall, because the door leading off to the bedrooms is only a little over 5 foot high!
So do come and enjoy a holiday in my lovely cottage and have a fantastic time exploring Ireland.

In case you are interested in a little bit of architectural history of the cottage..........
The central room and the little bedroom next door once formed what was probably a barn dwelling, people living at one end (the fireplace end) and animals kept in the other end. The fireplace design is typical of cottage fireplaces from around 1600. Sometime in the 17th century or early part of the 18th this room was divided into a seperate bedroom and living area and a barn built for the animals outside. The design of the little door and its hinges are typical of this period in history. Next to be added was probably the dining end of the kitchen, maybe as a barn and then knocked through to form extra living space. I found a evidence of a large door opening (where the French doors are now) which had been filled in to accommodate a window in the wall. The end of the kitchen which houses the dresser was added next, with the twin room and dairy room/bathroom being added last. These last two areas were originally built as outhouses and are built in stone whereas the rest of the house is built with mud. The twin room was the stable and was knocked through to form a bedroom in the 1950's. I knocked through into the dairy room/bathroom end of the house in 2008. So the cottage has evolved over many hundreds of years which leaves us with a variety of different doors, windows, ceilings, alcoves and fireplaces throughout, giving each room its own character and its place in history. It really is a unique place. I just love it and I hope everyone who comes to stay will to.
Unfortunately for me, my work takes me away from home a lot, so I thought rather than leave the house empty it would be a great idea to let people come and stay and enjoy a holiday in Ireland in a truely authentic Irish cottage!
If I ever win the lottery my dream would be to rescue other unloved neglected little cottages down forgotten lanes all over Ireland and turn them into great places for people to stay!
