We love our place in the hills of Charlemont. It's quiet and relaxing. You can reconnect with nature and yourself. Take a few days to simplify your life in a comfortable fully furnished 2 bedroom cottage. Hiking , skiing and rafting are here !
If a quiet getaway is what you are looking for, we have it ! The Trout House is a self catering, energy efficient, two bedroom cottage, with locally harvested pine and ash floors and a beautiful wrap around deck. Charlemont has lots to offer, with great spring skiing for downhill and x-country skiing, or snowshoeing the trails. The towns of Greenfield and Shelburne Falls have excellent spots to eat, listen to music, see a movie or just browse around. AND don't miss the stars on a clear night, they are outrageous!
Less than 2 miles off Route 2 "The Mohawk Trail", we are an easy day trip to North Adams, MA the home of Mass MOCA, a great contemporary art museum (and sometimes concert center) and hiking trails up Mt. Greylock., the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown is a real gem of a museum, known internationally for it's collection.
We enjoy the quiet, with no internet, cable or phone. . When you want to "connect" there are establishments on Rte 2 with Wi-Fi and telephone access. There is progress being made for internet access in our part of the county... But it's not here yet.
Happy to have you come and share our northwest corner of Massachusetts ! We're part of the "hill country" !
All linens and towels are in place. Basic condiments including tea, coffee are available in the refrigerator as well as pancake mix, real maple syrup and frozen blueberries (fresh when in season) .
Interaction with Guests
We normally will greet our guests, give them the tour of the place and a reminder of the rules of the house, and then leave them to enjoy!
We are less than 2 miles from Route 2 but it feels like you are in a real getaway. No Cell service or Cable.. "off the media grid"... and so relaxing. the house is circled by tall pine trees and a mountain stream is just across the road. Lovely.
Best to use your car. Basic groceries can be found at Avery's on Rte 2. There is a new Berkshire Pizza place on Rte 2 with Wi Fi. Shelburne Falls is a lovely town to visit and enjoy as well.
Other Things to Note
Wi fi is available at the Berkshire Pizza shop in town. A New York transplant has settled in Charlemont and given us a great treat ! New York style pizza . If pastries and ice cream are your thing. the Coffee Bean has some very nice treats for you to nosh on. And of course, Zip Lining and mountain coaster ride are a great way to get up close with our hills !
Trash goes into the basement bin, we are a non-smoking establishment.
When you leave, lock up windows, doors , leave the keys on the kitchen
island and set thermostat to 45 (in winter).
Let us know if something gets used up and leave us a note.

We loved staying at the Trout House. It was very clean and loved the kitchen. Mary Ann had pancake mix, blueberries and maple syrup to make pancakes the next day. I loved the tile in the bathroom. We only stayed one night but can't wait to go back. I would highly recommend Rob and Mary Ann's Trout House. Mary Ann was great about the directions to the house and getting the key to us.
It was a great birthday weekend.
We spent a heavenly three days at Trout House. Mary Ann was responsive and welcoming in all correspondence and Rob was waiting for us at the house and greeted us warmly when we arrived. The heat was on, the kitchen stocked (anniversary wine, pancake mix, eggs, maple syrup, blueberries, etc.) and we felt at home immediately. We celebrated our 26th wedding anniversary on New Year's Eve, cooking a fabulous meal in the kitchen that had everything we needed. It was the perfect romantic place to connect, talk, plan, read, play board games and celebrate. Had a fabulous meal at Gypsy Apple in Shelburne Falls (don't miss it) and loved being unplugged from all our devices. Since Trout House is only an hour from where we live, we can't wait to return for more R&R!!!!
Trout House is welcoming, warm, clean, and even better than the photos. It is pretty easy to get to. We used the GPS as long as we could then went by Mary Ann's directions. We stayed from Friday - Sunday and did not want to leave. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen was well-equipped (pots, pans, plates, glasses, mugs, cutlery, etc). Mary Ann provides everything you could need or want or forget to bring (for us, a wine opener). The living room is spacious and perfect for relaxing, playing Charades & other games and taking a nap :) We loved the decor and felt right at home. Mary Ann is so nice and accommodating and we will definitely be staying at the Trout House again!
Mary Ann was welcoming! Her house is perfect in every way. We enjoyed a lovely fall weekend complete with area hikes and bike rides. The house was comfortable and well equipped for cooking . I recommend the house, the setting and the host!
Although Mary Ann was unable to greet us at the cottage, she made sure that we were able to get in without any issues.
We loved the Trout House and the surrounding area. The cottage was well-furnished and well-stocked with pots and pans, utensils, books, DVDs, board games, etc. There's even a receiver that lets you play music throughout the house!
The house is located near the Mohawk Trail and Savoy Mountain state parks (among others,) both of which have great hiking trails and scenic views.
This was truly a great experience!
My wife, our two friends and I all enjoyed our stay at the Trout House very much! The skies were clear both nights which allowed us to see the night sky in all its glory. We also enjoyed a nice fire while stargazing. The local area is really nice with a lot of scenic views and hiking trails and nearby Mass MOCA in North Adams. We look forward to revisiting the Trout House and local area in the not to distant future!
Hello, I'm Mary Ann.
I am a native of New England, hailing originally from northern NH.
Love the country, the nighttime skies, the quiet and gardening. If you visit our
little home in Charlemont you'll find the tall pine trees, big deck facing the mountain stream, and walking trails nearby. In the winter, there is downhill and cross country skiing, sledding and snowshoeing in the community (Berkshire east).
