This family sized apartment is situated behind the workshop of the Cambodian Handicraft Association. The association teaches life skills & handicrafts to women with disabilities, providing them with a job, a home, new skills & a supportive community.

The space
Set within the workshop of CHA, this comfortable, ground-level apartment provides an excellent base in Phnom Penh and an enriching insight into Cambodia. CHA helps women born with disabilities, or who've been left disabled by landmines, gain the skills to live more independent lives. The self-contained apartment has its own kitchen and living room and is within the same building as CHA, with access through the workshop. Staying here not only supports the organisation, it gives you a chance to see the engaging CHA workshop, practice English with its members and learn about Cambodian life through the unique spirit of a real, grassroots organisation.

My name’s Kim Tha, I manage the Cambodian Handicraft Association (CHA). We’re a local, grassroots NGO founded in 2000 to help women with disabilities gain vital life skills and lead independent lives. CHA works with women who are often from very poor, rural backgrounds and have been affected by polio, landmine injuries, deafness or mental trauma. We teach sewing, beading and a variety of handicrafts, skills which our members can use to eventually earn a living and share with their families. We sell our handicraft products through our shop, which is next door to our workspace. We also host international volunteers to teach English classes and additional handicraft and sewing, to further empower our young women.

In Cambodia there is no Government welfare or support net for people with disabilities, so CHA is funded solely through the sale of our products. Most of our members live at the CHA premises, where we have daily meals, lessons and run our busy workspace. Our ultimate aim is for members to gain vital self-confidence, new skills and progress to a point where they can return to their local communities to live more independently.

We make our apartment available on Airbnb to pay the rent for our premises, and to keep our organization running. Staying at CHA not only gives you an enriching local experience while you are in Phnom Penh, it supports our NGO and the lives of our members. We hope to see you here!
