All about Michael & Kris’s place

First you should know we are both fully vaccinated for the CORONA virus. We want both us - and our guests - to remain healthy. We ask that guests be clear and communicate about their needs and practices regarding the pandemic.

Nature, parks, national monuments, trails, birding, museums, craft breweries, and incredible dining experiences will give you a great taste of northern Arizona. Welcome to our upstairs "Bird Room". A mountain view is outside your window.

The space
Yes, there are mountains in Arizona! Our location at the base of Mt. Elden provides trail and National Forest access less than two blocks away. Wildlife abounds on the mountain and your private upstairs room celebrates our feathered friends. You have a queen-size bed, double dresser, double closet, reading chair at the window and small table for the spotting scope.

Other features include:
- full bath with shower down the hall for your use only. Linens provided.
- half bath on the main level
- hot water bottle takes the chill off the sheets
- fully equipped kitchen for your use
- dining room seats 8
- living room with TV, books, and board games (let us know if small kids are coming and we'll bring out the wooden train set.)
- propane BBQ on the back deck
- Ponderosa treed backyard that's fenced
- hiking sticks to borrow

Guests will be provided with a quick reference sheet with local emergency contact information and flashlight/fire extinguisher/first aid kit location, trail books, and local activity suggestions. There is also a basket of soap/shampoo/toothbrush/lotion if you forgot to pack something. We want your stay to be comfortable!

Remember that Flagstaff is a mountain town at 7,000 feet. That means evenings are cold and the sun is strong.

Where you’ll be

Flagstaff, Arizona, United States

One block north of our house your GPS will show a blank as far as roads (because we are at the edge of the Coconino National Forest). During Spring monsoons, your room has a perfect view of the often 20-minute storms. So much is roughly 15 minutes away by car, including downtown with it's quality restaurants, increasingly respected craft breweries, galleries and shops. (Flagstaff is an Arizona pioneer town of nearly 70,000 people now. Early settlers were drawn by the harvestable Ponderosa Pine forest, cool high-altitude grazing for sheep and cattle, mining and natural wonders like the Grand Canyon.)

It's important to us that Flagstaff is a university town. Energy, youthful outlooks, sports and cultural riches accompany the presence of our Northern Arizona University that currently enrolls nearly 20,000 students.

Don't mind the Abert squirrels in the back yard or the deer clomping on our deck - they come with the neighborhood!

We are Oregonians hiding in Arizona. We enjoy the Arizona sun and Flagstaff reminds us of our days in Central Oregon. Mountains, forests, trails and a university all make Flagstaff home to us. We are travelers and love meeting other travelers from all over the world. If you have a sense of adventure and want to check out our high-altitude nest, we look forward to having you experience Flagstaff!

During your stay

We are people lovers! We enjoy getting to know our guests, especially international visitors. Share your travel adventures with us! We have hosted many folks over the years including national and international musical groups, contra dancers, family and friends of friends. We are very active community members who can help point you in many right directions if you need suggestions.

Breakfasts can be fun at our house, too! If our schedules coordinate, we love to cook. Enjoy a fruit yogurt cup and "bird's nest" breakfast with Kris's homemade jam, and wake to a cup of fresh-brewed local-roasted coffee or tea. If by chance we won't be seeing you in the morning, we can leave you a breakfast burrito to zap, if you'd like. There are always fresh fruit and baked goods to enjoy anytime!
