It really doesn't get any better than this! Come share this Garden of Eden in the North Portland Overlook neighborhood, walking distance to the up and coming Mississippi Arts District.
Located 3 blocks from a Max (Portland's street car) stop, a 15 minute ride into downtown [and the train station!] and 45 minute ride to the airport. Alternatively, on a major bike route with about a 15-20 minute ride into downtown (bike rentals available here!!). As well, by car, the house is a 10 minute drive to downtown and a 15 minute drive to the airport.
My home is an urban permaculture homestead; all of the landscaping is edible and organic with 10 beautiful chickens and one honey bee colony (they hang out in the back corner of the garden and without mention you wouldn't even know they were there!) As well, the neighborhood is surrounded in beautiful gardens. The interior of the home is being remodeled into an eco modern paradise utilizing all sustainable and non-toxic materials. Don't worry, I'm not currently working on any projects, there are just a few unfinished ones around the house! I am very environmentally conscious; recycle everything and compost, the electricity is sourced 100% from wind power through the service provider, as well, the gas heating comes from the Methane produced on dairy farms! Additionally as part of our house remodel I am updating the house to be as energy efficient as possible.
I have two rooms available to rent, so if this one isn't available check on the other! Both bedrooms have very comfortable queen sized beds and can hold a single cot (that we can provide) for a third person. The bedrooms are private, but we share a bathroom. : ) There is ample shared space throughout the house and you will have access to wireless internet.
Your stay includes a self serve organic breakfast of oatmeal, granola, yogurt, fruit, coffee and tea. Access to on-site laundry and gourmet farm fresh breakfast can be provided upon request for a nominal fee. I am a total foodie and excellent cook and buy only local, organic produce and pasture-fed meats. Depending on the season there may be fresh fruit and veggies from the garden available, as well as fresh eggs from the chickens! The fully stocked kitchen is available for you to prepare meals in if you so choose and New Seasons Market, Portland's local grocery store, is only two Max stops away or a 15 minute walk!
Enjoy a walk to the Mississippi Neighborhood where you'll find quaint coffee shops, fabulous boutiques, yoga studios, spa's, music venues and pubs. There are a number of amazing local restaurants nearby with your choice of Thai, Mexican, Italian, pizza and southern food to name a few, as well as a variety of gourmet food carts. And lets not forget another thing Portland is known for.... beer! Widmer Brewing is down the road as well as McMenamins (White Eagle) and lesser known Amnesia Brewing, Lucky Lab, Hopworks Urban Brewery and New Old Lompoc. You might also enjoy relaxing in the backyard garden here!
The house is shared with my loving miniature schnauzer Beau. He loves guests and likes to greet them when they arrive! I am pleased to meet new people - we can sit and chat, or just smile and say hi as you come and go. As well, I am happy to give advice on great ways to explore the area.
This house is super laid back, I really don't have any rules! I just ask that you be respectful of others using the space as far as volume of noise is concerned. You can come and go as you please (no worries on late night arrivals as long as you are quiet if arriving in late!)
I highly recommend staying here. Joelle's place, particularly this room, is especially cozy. The few permanent residents here are great resources for getting plugged into Portland, and are very sociable -- many interesting late night conversations to be had. The house itself has a singular decor with an intriguing eclectic feel, and the yard out back is large, attractive, and filled with extensive gardens. There are a few pups on-site eager to receive your cuddles, and raptors in the backyard! Okay, not velociraptors or anything, but chickens -- perhaps the closest thing to raptors you'll find in Portland -- who are fun to watch and give random names to. There's an unbelievably sweet neighborhood kitty who will visit you out back, and if you have allergies, no worries -- no kitties inside. As you can tell, I'm partial to the fauna, since I travel so much I can't have my own pets. The yellow MAX line is about a 3-4 minute walk (the Prescott stop) and you can be downtown in about 15 minutes upon boarding the train. If you think the lighting is dim, just check the dimmer switches -- they're available on almost every light in the house. Have fun!
The hosts did not answer communication prior to our arrival, the shared living spaces were not clean and the dogs were not properly cared for. The bed and room itself were comfortable. However, there are no locks on the bedroom door and the front door is unlocked with a sign that says to come on in.
Joelle and Jessica were great hosts, and very accommodating, which we really appreciated. Their home is charming and welcoming, and our room was opulent. The location was perfect for our biking-oriented visit to Portland, and worked just as well for the days we used the car. We would gladly stay at the "homestead" again, and highly recommend.
Joelle and her roommates were very welcoming, and a real treat was the pack of snuggly dogs who jumped to our feet as soon as we walked in. Nice kitchen with lots of cooking supplies - wish there was more counter space/less dishes since we only needed to prepare food for two. Hope they can redo the locks on rented rooms and the entry door - it was never a problem during our stay but would've made us feel safer, in general. Will definitely come back to visit!
Joelle's home was great! I stayed in the Permie Homestead room. The shared areas were nice, and the kitchen was equipped for nights where I wanted to eat in. She has a separate refrigerator for the airbnb-ers. Unlimited supply of tea was perfect for the mornings! Joelle's housemates were also very helpful with suggestions on where to go/places to eat. Lots of brochures and maps of Portland neighborhoods to visit as well!
The bedroom: 9/10
The room is as accurate as the picture displayed on Airbnb. It was neat, spacious, the bed was really comfortable. They also had a portable heater which was nice. The door knob handle fell off but luckily we were able to fix it which didn't cause too much of a problem.
The bathroom: 7/10
They provided towels. The bathroom was clean around the sink area. The toilet looked a little dirty around the base but was clean overall with a good stock of toilet paper. The shower was clean but would clog but it may be because of the filter thats occluding the drainage. They provided community shampoo and soap.
The rest of the home: 7.5/10
I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt but I think they're in the middle of construction or something but it didn't look as clean as in the Airbnb photos. There was also a lot of clutter. They have two friendly dogs that greet you but don't really bother you if they sense that about you. They also let you use the kitchen if you need it but it wasn't comfy to hang out in the living space.
The host: 10/10
Well, I only met Joelle briefly but Shanita, her roommate was really great. She was very warm, welcoming, easy to chat with and gave us a lot of advice on what to visit and what to do which made our trip great.
- Mississippi street is less than a mile walking distance, a lot of restaurant choices. Alberta isn't too far off either.
- Get a Car2Go membership one week before your trip because it makes it easy to get around. Or you could visit the physical location in Portland and set one up the same day.
- The Max line is close by. About a 5 min walk. Download the app on your smartphone and buy your ticket that way so you don't need to carry a physical one.
- The best way hands down to see the city is to rent a bike and ride it around through the popular neighborhoods.
