About this listing
It really doesn't get any better than this! Come share this Garden of Eden in the North Portland Overlook neighborhood, walking distance to the up and coming Mississippi Arts District.
Located 3 blocks from a Max (Portland's street car) stop, a 15 minute ride into downtown [and the train station!] and 45 minute ride to the airport. Alternatively, on a major bike route with about a 15-20 minute ride into downtown (bike rentals available here!!). As well, by car, the house is a 10 minute drive to downtown and a 15 minute drive to the airport.
My home is an urban permaculture homestead; all of the landscaping is edible and organic with 10 beautiful chickens and one honey bee colony (they hang out in the back corner of the garden and without mention you wouldn't even know they were there!) As well, the neighborhood is surrounded in beautiful gardens. The interior of the home is being remodeled into an eco modern paradise utilizing all sustainable and non-toxic materials. Don't worry, I'm not currently working on any projects, there are just a few unfinished ones around the house! I am very environmentally conscious; recycle everything and compost, the electricity is sourced 100% from wind power through the service provider, as well, the gas heating comes from the Methane produced on dairy farms! Additionally as part of our house remodel I am updating the house to be as energy efficient as possible.
I have two rooms available to rent, so if this one isn't available check on the other! Both bedrooms have very comfortable queen sized beds and can hold a single cot (that we can provide) for a third person. The bedrooms are private, but we share a bathroom. : ) There is ample shared space throughout the house and you will have access to wireless internet.
Your stay includes a self serve organic breakfast of oatmeal, granola, yogurt, fruit, coffee and tea. Access to on-site laundry and gourmet farm fresh breakfast can be provided upon request for a nominal fee. I am a total foodie and excellent cook and buy only local, organic produce and pasture-fed meats. Depending on the season there may be fresh fruit and veggies from the garden available, as well as fresh eggs from the chickens! The fully stocked kitchen is available for you to prepare meals in if you so choose and New Seasons Market, Portland's local grocery store, is only two Max stops away or a 15 minute walk!
Enjoy a walk to the Mississippi Neighborhood where you'll find quaint coffee shops, fabulous boutiques, yoga studios, spa's, music venues and pubs. There are a number of amazing local restaurants nearby with your choice of Thai, Mexican, Italian, pizza and southern food to name a few, as well as a variety of gourmet food carts. And lets not forget another thing Portland is known for.... beer! Widmer Brewing is down the road as well as McMenamins (White Eagle) and lesser known Amnesia Brewing, Lucky Lab, Hopworks Urban Brewery and New Old Lompoc. You might also enjoy relaxing in the backyard garden here!
The house is shared with my loving miniature schnauzer Beau. He loves guests and likes to greet them when they arrive! I am pleased to meet new people - we can sit and chat, or just smile and say hi as you come and go. As well, I am happy to give advice on great ways to explore the area.
This house is super laid back, I really don't have any rules! I just ask that you be respectful of others using the space as far as volume of noise is concerned. You can come and go as you please (no worries on late night arrivals as long as you are quiet if arriving in late!)
Had such a great stay here, Portland now one of my favorite places on Earth now. The housemates were awesome - from awesome restaurant recommendations to meditative drawing - we had a blast and felt like we got a genuine taste of what this area has to offer. Location is cool - walking distance from a few central areas with tons of foods/things to do; house has a really cool vibe.
Staying at Joelles was amazing. It's a little bit more "rugged" than it looks in the pictures (Airbnb photographers to a fantastic job ;-)) but that's not a bad thing. Still very clean and a nice oasis to come home to at the end of a long day.
I didn't get to meet Joelle but her housemate took good care of me. There were also other guests in&out. No problems at all.
The only thing is that the WiFi setup can get a little more complicated if you don't know your way around networks.
Neighborhood is nice and quiet and walking distance to a bunch of great bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and even breweries (if you like walking) on or near Mississippi Ave.
Would totally stay here again!
Our stay with Joelle and her roommates was a great experience. The private room is lovely and very comfortable. We had a chance to get to know her roommates and their dogs...so cute! They are very good dogs, who made sure we were friendly when we first arrived, and afterwords were completely relaxed. I was able to sit and hold them even!
The house is very laid back and we felt like we could immediately make ourselves comfortable. We spent a few moments of free time each day in Joelle's backyard where it feels like a different world, with the large natural garden, the chickens, and the beehive. Great photo ops!
Joelle's neighbourhood is near the Historic Mississippi district and walking distance to the MAX train. Both are very good areas to be close to for shops, restaurants, and plenty of activities. This convenient location made it easy for us to experience many different areas in Portland, and mostly by foot.
The only possible thing to improve is the WiFi connection. We weren't able to connect, although a password is provided. However, if you walk over to a cafe for breakfast, you can connect to their WiFi instead and post your photos with the chickens. ;)
We recommend Joelle's place to anyone looking for a relaxed, comfortable, and unique stay in Portland. You should be ready to just go with the flow and enjoy!
The room was comfortable and the host and her housemates were friendly, but no one was there to greet me when I arrived and the host didn't respond to my text messages or phone calls. I don't think there were fresh sheets on the bed and the bathroom was bit dirty. The host could put in a little more effort; it felt like more of a place to crash than a service I was paying for.
I stayed two nights with a friend and very much enjoyed the coziness of Joelle's home. She was away and so I didn't get a chance to meet her but Jonathan and Shanita were friendly as were the two pooches, Beau and Gypsy. There's a beautiful big plum tree in back with delicious ripe yellow plums and a big garden. Wifi wasn't working at the time but no biggie here. House was clean and had a cozy, lived-in feeling. Also very good location!
My girlfriend and I stayed here for 2 nights. It was great for what we needed, a peaceful friendly place to stay. Would happily stay again!
We loved our stay here in Portland! The place may not look like much from the outside, but it was clean and cozy and the hosts were so warm and hospitable.
