The Steading is an historic stone building on a sheep grazing property at foothills of the Snowy Mts. Recently renovated for accommodation, it was the filmset for TV SAS Australia as their secret locale. A unique experience to stay in such a magnificent landscape in an authentic farm building. Perfect for artists, photographers, musicians, writers, cyclists, walkers & people wanting calm quiet tranquility & beauty or as a base for the mountains. 1 bedroom & lounge with option of another b/room.

The space
There are piles of books to read, nearby stream to fish in, fabulous roads to cycle on, nearby Snowy River to swim in, an hours drive from Thredbo and a great place to totally get away from noise and people! You may sight a few kangaroos and wallabies, grazing sheep and perhaps an echidna and many birds. The Steading was built 120 years ago when the property was 20,000 acres in size and it was the centrepiece of the largest lucerne producing property in the southern hemisphere. The building was large enough for the teams of horses and men who were employed to cut the lucerne over the summer months when all the sheep were departured in the nearby snowy mountains. The property has been the wellspring for much creative output with musicians, writers, artists and more recently the Channel 7 filming of the SAS series. It is a place to calmly detox and enjoy the sound of silence without distraction of tv. There is no wifi but those who have Telstra phones will be able to be online. It is for those who enjoy vast open raw landscapes, authentic vernacular architecture, the luxury of piles of great books, and endless starry nights... There is one bedroom with lounge room, kitchen, bathroom and hallway but also the option of another large bedroom with queen bed at the rear of the building.

Where you’ll be

Most homes on Monaro are surrounded by trees that block views of the stunning landscape, but not so the Steading. The skyscapes are superb, as are the sunsets. At the moment some of the film set is still in place but this is being removed. The whole feeling is one of tranquility and authenticity.

During your stay

The Steading is quite separate and some distance from the homestead and shearing shed and other outbuildings on the property and your privacy is assured. The owners enjoy their privacy too, but are more than happy to welcome guests to the Steading and provide any information needed. As the property is a working one, with bio-security an issue, no pets are allowed and farm outbuildings, shearing shed etc are out of bounds.
