The Space

Featured on "The Sunday Times", "The Observer", "The Guardian", "The Travel Channel" + several reknown international design magazines as one of the best 20 holiday homes/vacation rentals in the Mediterranean, Casa Teulada is a luxury, uniquely furbished and wonderful Villa comprising three self catering independent apartments located in the authentic rural town of Teulada on the Italian island of Sardinia, just 4 minutes from some of the most amazing, pristine and crystal clear waters in the Med. Known to many as the Caribbean of the Mediterranean, Sardinia is a place second to none and Casa Teulada is a "place for the senses" able to convey great emotions to a discerned traveller. Far from crowded mass tourism, fancy places, set in a totally natural, real and genuine environment, surrounded by warm locals, Casa Teulada is the ideal place for those seeking a vacation in a place like "Nuovo Cinema Paradiso" and in a home which is regarded as one of the most striking, unparalleled architechtural recoveries of the entire Southwestern coast of Sardinia. CASA 1 and CASA 2 apartment units are 60 square meters (646 square feet) and sleeps max 4 guests, whith 1 bedroom with a king size double bed and two single beds/stone sofas in the living room. CASA 3 apartment unit is the same as the other, only slightly smaller (48 Square meters, or 500 square feet) and can host max 3 guests. Complete with all mod cons, a fully furnished kitchen, an outdoor living area comprising a patio with table and chairs, bbq, outdoor shower for cooling off after a day at the beach. There is also a big, charming courtyard with an old fishing boat turned into a cosy lounge seating area to sip cocktails with friends or enjoy the incredible starry nights with our candle lights and lanterns. • Our stay at Casa Monteloro in late May (spring) was wonderful. As soon as you enter you realise that you aren't simply renting a space, but a family's country retreat, furnished with years of collected knick-knacks and antique furniture that give the house a real sense of warmth.

The house is nestled high on a Tuscan hillside on a tight, narrow, twisting mountain road through beautiful woods; you'll definitely need your own car to reach it. It's situated next to a vineyard with its own fenced garden above that our kids (8 and 11) had loads of fun playing in. The unseasonal weather meant we didn't spend much time in the outdoor area, but the spacious lounge was a very comfortable place to relax in after a hard day on the tourist trail. It was nice to have a peaceful sanctuary to come home to. While the house and garden are fully self-contained, there are a couple of other dwellings in the hamlet, but they don't intrude.

We had the pleasure of seeing wild cinghiali, cervi e faggiani - wild boars, deer and pheasants - all close to the house (the kids were ecstatic). We were quite surprised at how remote the woods feel given their close proximity to the centre of one of Italy's largest cities.

A good tip for prospective residents is to park unlimited and free down the hill from Fiesole near a 'fermata' (bus stop) and take the No 7 bus into Piazza San Marco - a 20-minute trip by bus and so much easier than coping with the traffic.

The requested check-in time was a little too restrictive for us, but the owners (Andrea and Manuela) went out of their way to meet us and get us in early, and were very warm and welcoming. The hosts Antonio & Christina were also very helpful with all our email inquiries before leaving Australia.

If you have your own wheels and are looking for a peaceful retreat in the Tuscan countryide (and don't mind a bit of driving), Casa Monteloro is a memorable option.
