“Teacher” in Swahili, Mwalimu greets everyone ready for a resort-style getaway. Reconnect with each other swimming in the salt-water pool, gazing out over the valley, wandering the trails on 900-acres of rolling hill country or mingling in one of the many indoor/outdoor private gathering areas.

Mwalimu has two dwellings connected by a covered walkway and the pool, each with two bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms.

Fireplace – Pool – Library – Garden –Deck with Grill – Fire Pit.

Adults only

The space
NOTE: We are currently only able to offer Mwalimu to adults as we do not have our pool-fenced in, and have several art treasures scattered about both houses that are easily broken.

Mwalimu for the past 30 years has been a private home shared with many interesting guests, including both friends of High Hope, Fossil Rim, artists, and retreats. The artists' gifts to High Hope combined with the local limestone fossil-rocks used to build the houses and patios welcomes the curious and restores those in need of a break from their everyday routines without ever leaving the house!

Step outside though, wander in wonder and be ‘re-wilded’ by the nature of High Hope.

The rates are for 8 people, extra overnight guests are $50 per person per night plus tax. Please let us know how many extra guests you would like to bring so we can be prepared for you.

Well behaved dogs are also welcome at $50 per pet per stay. For their safety and ours, and our wildlife, we ask that they be on a leash when outside.

Guest have the entire area to themselves, both houses, the pool and the deck. Ranch team members will be by daily to check the pool, refill the bird feeders and tend the "Spiral Garden" which you can almost see out the kitchen window.

The main house has the kitchen (double wall oven, convection and regular oven, dishwasher, side-by-side fridge, dehydrator, water ionizer, and chest freezer), a dining table for 10, an island and bar, and opens onto the pool deck. The deck has a table for 8 and other seating areas, a propane grill, a fire pit, and awesome sunset vistas.

The living room (2 couches and a love seat for 8) is filled with art and books and the wood-burning stove. The master suite has its own sunny library, writing area, king bed, sumptuous bathroom with a walk-in shower and meditation bay, and opens up to both the pool and back deck.
The second bedroom is upstairs, with 2 double beds, a writing nook, a bathroom with a tub (soaking salts provided!), and a shower. The entertainment center has the only television on the entire ranch, plus VHS, DVD and CD players and titles.

The Sanctuary ‘annex’ has 2 bedrooms, each with a queen bed, closet, and private bath with a walk-in shower. The bedrooms are separated by lovely sliding Japanese-style wood and opaque glass sliding doors. Please note they provide visual privacy but are not entirely soundproof.
The all-glass, west-facing wall of the sanctuary offers a relaxing view of the pool during the day and ever-changing sunsets to enjoy nightly! The gathering area in the Sanctuary has a small bar (two mini-fridges, sink, microwave, tea kettle, drip coffee maker, small blender, and a toaster oven are available) and a coffee cart, and gathering space (set up for group conversation and a couple's reading area.

The upstairs loft is yet another library/reading area and can be used for extra sleeping space (single pallets/pads provided). There is also space for queen airbeds downstairs.

The salt-water pool can be accessed from both Mwalimu and the Sanctuary. While the Sanctuary has covered porches on both sides of the house, Mwalimu has the gathering deck with a propane grill, fire pit, dining table for 8 (and room to add more tables), seating areas, and wide stairs perfect for sunset watching and group picture taking! The pool has a major cleaning every Tuesday, and ranch staff make unobtrusive visits for daily maintenance.

NOTE: If you are looking after 4:00 on any given Friday, and Mwalimu is available, we are happy to take last minute bookings, but you will have to send an inquiry so we can open up for a 1 night rental! If you would like early check-ins or late check outs, let us know, and we will add that to your special offer ($200 per 2 hour extra block).

The 'yard' includes the Spiral Garden which you are welcome to tour, we can arrange a guided 'tasting and picking' program for you there if you would like to experience the true farm to table experience, several fruit trees, bird feeders, our green house (you are welcome to look inside, but please stay outside!), and the solar 'sunflowers' that power the house! Our gardening team will be using the greenhouse, but will be as unobtrusive as possible!

We keep the outside lighting to a minimum so that you can enjoy the night sky, including seeing the Milky Way and numerous meteor showers throughout the year.

You can relax and enjoy yourself, knowing you are on lands committed to regeneration of prairies, gardens, wildlife and guests. Mwalimu has solar power. Even though there is no curbside recycling or drop-offs in Somervell County, we recycle and have bags in the house and bins outside the back door leading to the grill and deck! Compost is shared with Fossil Rim, kitchen and overflow compost buckets are in each house. All houses are stocked and cleaned with non-toxic materials. We use the most eco-friendly EPA approved sanitizers, too.

Your stay supports us putting the ranch into a non-profit conservancy. High Hope’s 900-acres combined with Fossil Rim Wildlife Center next door creates almost 2,000 acres of green space, with Mwalimu near the middle!

Mwalimu is just one of four guest house rentals available at High Hope Retreat. Habari, a five-bedroom house for 10-15 people, Kasa Casa with 2 bedrooms for 5 people and Mata’Zamo with 2 bedrooms for 8 people have been available on AirBnB since 2013! High Hope offers full ranch rates for retreats and truly special events.

Please let us know if you are planning an event or party so we can explain opportunities and extra fees involved.

Where you’ll be

Glen Rose, Texas, United States

There are worlds to explore without leaving the ranch. Each ravine has its own character and rock formations. Most trails have their own ‘fossil personality’. Benches are strategically placed throughout the ranch for rest and reflection. The Labyrinth, Medicine Hill, Stone Circle, St. Francis Hill, the Peace Pole, Twin Fall, Roger’s Reach, Goat Cave, and Sunset Ridge and the trails that connect them offer days of exploring just outside your doorstep.

What we offer, that few others can, is 900-acres of holistically and organically managed open space with 20 miles of trails and a shared boundary with Fossil Rim! Not only do we share the viewshed we share the soundscape! Listen to the night sounds of both native wildlife and if luck is with you, Fossil Rim’s wolves will join the chorus. In the fall, we hear their Red Deer bugling. One trail connects with Fossil Rim’s Overlook Cafe, you can hike up for lunch!

During the spring, High Hope’s ravines host the critically endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler, a stunning bird that nests only in the Texas Hill Country where they find a combination of ravines and hillsides with ancient junipers and young oak trees. We welcome fields of bluebonnets and other wildflowers as the seasons change. Summers here are filled with bluebirds and painted buntings! Crows and vultures entertain year-round.

Being just outside Glen Rose gives you more reason to stay longer! High Hope is less than 5 minutes away from Fossil Rim's entrance, and 20 minutes away from Dinosaur Valley State Park and their horseback rides offered by Eagle Eye Ranch. High Hope’s entrance on County Road 2009 is on the Paluxy Pedal route (the ominous 'Not the Wall' sign at the bottom of 2009 speaks to how steep our neighboring roads are!). The town of Glen Rose offers Big Rocks Park (wading, fishing, and exploring on the Paluxy), a river walk, historical buildings, and a playground at Heritage Park, a historic town square with great food, shopping, and entertainment.

We can also help you schedule massage therapists, yoga instructors and other healers to come work with you!

Mwalimu is 0.9 miles down the driveway from the county road that gets you here. High Hope is 2 miles from Glen Rose and Walnut Springs and about 30 miles from Granbury, Stephenville or Cleburne. DFW airport is 70 miles away, Austin is 160 miles, Houston 220 miles, Amarillo 315 miles.

I feel lucky every day when I wake up surrounded by live oaks and rolling hills on the northwestern edge of the Texas Hill Country. I am here to help manage my friend's four unique guest houses on this lovely 1,100 acre ranch. Chances are if you visited before Covid, I was the one who greeted you. I am always available to answer any questions. We are here for you, but only when you need or want us! Our ranch's motto is Healthy Land, Healthy Animals, Healthy and Happy People! High Hope Ranch not only borders Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, we share a connected history. Krystyna, the ranch owner, moved to Texas to help run, and then buy Fossil Rim Wildlife Center which began as a private entity. She built the programs that have made Fossil Rim an internationally respected conservation facility, and a 'must-see' for all area visitors. While doing this, she also purchased any land that came up for sale bordering Fossil Rim to create a buffer zone. When Fossil Rim was ready to operate on its own as a non-profit organization, she donated the 1,800 acres that Fossil Rim occupied, and kept the buffer zone, the 1100 acres that house our three guest houses and we call High Hope Retreat and Ranch. Our trails connect you to open space, at various degrees of elevation challenges! Our open space reconnect you to nature, yourself and each other! Treat yourself to sleeping with the windows open under the Milky Way!

During your stay

High Hope is a working ranch, dedicated to restoring native prairies and other habitats. We also live on property and are here to be of service should you need us. We also want you to feel as if you are visiting 'the family ranch' with the freedom to wander and explore.

There will be someone coming by the house daily to check the pool and feed the birds. Mwalimu has our Spiral Garden so if you are lucky you may meet Brandi and Robert in the garden. They also visit the green house to check on the plants and the solar panels that provide the house with electricity!

Our goal, especially with Covid-19 precautions, is to arm you with all the information you need, so that you can enjoy your time here in privacy, calling on us when you need us! We provide a comprehensive self-check-in guide to all guests, and supplement that information with an in-house guest book.
