About this listing
Featuring some of the most spectacular views in Savusavu, our 2 breezy and comfortable cottages have a rustic simplicity and modern sensibility. Enjoy our self catering cottages with bountiful garden and private but close proximity to Savusavu town.
Bula Vista is a unique holiday rental in Fiji on the beautiful and unspoilt northern island of Vanua Levu. We have a stunning view of the Savusavu Harbour, and its great to watch the boats coming and going and the weather moving across the sky, as well as the superb sunsets. The accommodation has been designed to be low tech and very simple but extremely comfortable and relaxing. We have a main cabin and a second room which sleeps 2 in either two single beds or a queen.
At both rooms, you will enjoy stunning views of the Savusavu Harbour, a real Fijian style outdoor living experience, modern bathroom facilities, ocean breeze cooling, and comfortable bed and linens.
We have designed this location as a place you can relax and really enjoy the real Fiji. Our garden is designed with the idea of giving guests the opportunity to pick their own fruit for breakfast if they desire. Pineapples, mango, papayas, bananas, limes, passion fruit, lemons, lemon grass as well as low growing coconut trees provide a great opportunity to eat really fresh and fragrant tropical fruit grown with organic techniques.
This self-contained accommodation is minutes from Savusavu town - a FJD$3.50 taxi ride and also very handy to the airport about 2 kilometres away. Beaches, snorkleing and adventure activities are also very close.
You will be met at the airport, ferry or bus station in Savusavu when you arrive if you require a pick up (please advise).
The accommodation has been created from a beautiful blue 20 foot container, painted white inside, with a varnished hardwood floor and fully screened with two windows and a ranch slider. It comes with a queen size bed, refridgerator/freezer and writing desk. It has a roof over the top and a wrap around deck with outdoor kitchen/living room and stunning views. There is a lounging couch, 4 directors chairs, a table, and 3-ring gas burner for cooking. We provide a small washing machine and line drying as well as a dryer.
The accommodation comes equipped with linens, towels, soap, cooking implements and a starter pack of coffee, tea etc. and consumables.
The toilet and shower are nicely finished with tiles and all the water goes through a 4 stage filtration system from the pump. Water is sourced primarily form the roof, however town water is also available. We hold 15,000 litres on the property. Diversions for rainy days are provided with a DVD player & DVD's, CD player and extra speakers for your iphone, as well as a collection of books and games. We provide a phone for local calls, as well as a list of taxis and other contacts. You top this phone up when required. We also provide a pocket wifi device so you can prepay at the Valufone kiosk in town and get great wifi reception.
Savusavu has excellent casual restaurants and a small yacht club and marina which both have waterfront bars. There is also a Planters Club which was established by some of the earlier colonial copra plantation owners. About 300 yachts a year come through here and the town is home to many interesting locals and expats. Boat and inland tours of various kinds are available. Rental cars and scooters can also be found locally, and we can provide info as required. There is a full compendium of local contacts and other important information inside the cabin.
There is a great local market, several banks, ATMs and supermarkets as well as a post office and ships chandler.
The location has great internet and cell phone coverage. There are also several internet cafes in town as well.
There is accommodation for 2 persons (and a young child) in the cabin, with a new room for a further two persons (twin or queen configuration).

We spent two truly amazing weeks staying with Liz and Kevin at Bula Vista. This was the very first stop on our round-the-world trip and we're hopeful that, following such a wonderful experience, everything else from here on in is not a letdown. :)
As others have described, the location is wonderful and the view is divine. As Liz and Kevin were there at the time, we (at their suggestion) stayed in their new private bure just down the hill -- though we had complete access to everything (kitchen, washing machine, deck, etc.). The new bure is a little slice of heaven and has the most comfortable bed in Fiji -- not to mention a million-dollar view from one's pillow!
The property is set on a serene hillside but is only a 10-minute walk to Savusavu -- a very interesting, colorful and friendly town at the edge of a protected harbor. There were several fine restaurants, supermarkets, shops and curry houses (our favorite!). What a terrific place!
Beyond its first-class location and superb amenities, what sets this experience apart from all other airBNB engagements we've had was the kindness of the hosts. Liz and Kevin are a thoughtful, interesting and patient team. Our meals with them -- and the conversations therein -- were like catching up with old friends.
If you're really looking for a sublime slice of paradise in a tranquil setting, you should look no further. While we had the pleasure of staying there for 14 nights, it could have just as easily been months.
Bula Vista is absolutely as advertised but also so much more and so very different. It's very private yet accessible; personally restorative but also deeply communal; and exceedingly comfortable and devoid of resorty glam.
Thank you, Liz and Kevin, for sharing your wonderful vacation home with us and for being such attentive (and yet entirely unobtrusive) hosts!
I only spoke to Liz on skype but she was very helpful and had a lot of good information available inside the room. Bula Vista has very nice view and a really nice garden with many fruits available for picking. We had fresh coconuts, passion fruits and pineapple almost daily.
Some room tips:
- Prepare for a mosquito attack, have repellents and buy coils from town.
- If you are going to need a data plan, better do it the moment you arrive at the airport. I got a sim card with data only plan (8 GB) for 35 FJD.
- Do not leave shoes or slippers outside during the night. The neighbour's dogs love footwear.
- The walk to town is about 15 minutes (return is uphill), find the shortcut with stairs leading to main road.
- You'll need a bus or taxi to go to a beach.
Thanks for the review! Sorry you got a mossie issue - depends on rainfall and wind, and keeping the door shut on the container does help for future guest reference! Coils are pretty good too and work well outside. Glad you got to enjoy the fruits and view! Will recommend the shoe plan! All the best for your travels! Warm regards, Liz & Kevin
In every way totally awesome! We really enjoyed picking eggplant, lemon grass and passion fruits from the garden. Yoga pavillion has been rebuilt to a guest building, but yoga was great on the container terrace, too. This must be the nicest place to spend holiday around Savusavu!
I loved the concept of a containerhome. It was like a oasis for us where we could relax while looking at the beautiful view. Liz was very helpful and made the stay perfect for us.
Bula Vista was an incredible space...I couldn't have imagined anything better! The view... the design of the shipping container house... the location... all of it was an amazing experience... one that I hope to have many more times in the future!
Bula vista was an absolutely delightful place to stay in Savusavu!! The views are spectacular and the accommodations were extremely cozy. The container is extremely cozy- very cozy bed, all the necessities you could ask for, and the outdoor kitchen and living space was perfect. While at the bula vista we spent our time relaxing on the hammock and taking in the views. I've stayed at many accommodations in savusavu and this is one if my absolute favorites! I would stay here again and recommend it to friends and family. Liz was extremely accommodating and made sure everything was perfect for us. Excellent communication. Thanks Liz, we had a magical time!!!
We loooooooved Bula Vista -- the container house stay was our favorite locale by far in Fiji. My wife and I stayed 2 weeks in Fiji in 3 different airbnb locations and this one we enjoyed most. Liz wasn't available on site to welcome us but she provided transport to and from the ferry and her taxi driver gave us an orientation to the property and was available to help navigate the town.
The view is spectacular -- I think the photos she includes here don't even do it justice! Sunset is especially lovely. Her guidebook provides a lot of details and the garden property is large and lovely -- perfect for us, since we wanted some privacy. Short walk to town, which is great, and full kitchen & washer for cooking & laundry. Plus, you get the novelty of sleeping in a giant shipping container! Liz even provides a mobile phone that you can recharge and use for making calls.
Bula Vista gets our highest recommendation for sure. You'll love it and Liz is great.
About the Host, Liz
My partner Kevin and I like people, cooking - good food, travel, sailing and gardening - and particularly warm places, which is why we have a place in beautiful, friendly, Savusavu, Vanua Levu, Fiji! We work in the moving image world when we are not engaged in either sailing or gardening in Fiji or Auckland.
