Multi-floor loft/half-chalet space centrally located in Pittsburgh within walking distance of most everything. Highlights include giant observation deck, hot tub, and vinyl records.
Before continuing: If you do not have at minimum a profile photo with your actual face shown and identity verification, I will not respond or book anything. I never book anybody without a photo, short bio, and verification. Please do not try to "instant book" (at least not without a message included). Please briefly state your intentions for travelling to Pittsburgh (i.e. conference, fun ? etc.) Also- it is extremely rare for me to book to somebody already living within the city of Pittsburgh- thank you for your understanding. All inquiries are welcome.
Things have changed slightly since the professional photos were taken 2 years ago. The "essence" of the place is exactly the same. The only real difference (for the better) is that there is now a queen-sized platform bed, and a full-size memory foam futon. (There is a low-res iPhone photo of what this looks like during installation). Additionally, a Twin XL sofa bed was added to the stereo room in place of the tan futon in the older photos. So- there are total 3 beds, 1 spare air bed, and 1 couch in the living room.
Ideal for artists/musicians/people who are open-minded- full of instruments, old recording gear, and vinyl records. Or- great for 20's-30's age couples or friends coming through Pittsburgh planning a fun weekend or sports outing. 1970's-"esque". International friendly, 420, and LGBT friendly. NOT ideal for families, pets, children, and/or the elderly. There are 2 flights of stairs and no elevator.
Highlights include rooftop observation deck with full skyline city view and chaises, indoor Jacuzzi, full kitchen with outdoor gas grill (on a 2nd lower level small deck), Foosball table, dart board, TV with 12 channels of basic cable, tons of DVD's, surround sound system (for movies or plug & play device), vintage Nintendo, N64, PS2, full upstairs vintage stereo system with vinyl record/CD player/plug and play device. Free Wi-Fi.
Bedrooms: there are two connected rooms separated by locking French doors. Currently, the one large room features both a Queen bed, and Full sized futon (Note: in the same room). There is a Twin XL sofa bed in the adjacent "stereo" room- this person would still have to enter the other main bedroom to use the bathroom. The one bathroom is at the end of the large main room. There is one additional twin air mattress. The bed linens are always washed. One large private bathroom with large walk-in shower (fits 2 people), private walk-in closet with hangers. Central AC/Heat (your room has its own temperature control). Please note: the furnace/AC is located within a closet within the room. Therefore, be forewarned that you can hear the heater/AC turn on and off if you are a light sleeper or the type of person that would complain about this in a review. However, I have never had to use the heat, and barely use the AC in the summer because these guest rooms receive residual from the other spaces in the house. Or- you can open the windows. Additional space heaters and box fans are available in the closet or by request.
Clean bath towels and large Jacuzzi/beach towels are provided as necessary. Hair dryer is provided. **The clothes iron is available upon request**
Large grey sectional couch shown in downstairs pictures is available to sleep on, but the living room cannot be guaranteed as a "private" room as it is the entryway to the place.
Also available upon request: Washer/dryer is located in basement costs $1.00 per wash/ the dryer is free. Detergent is provided. Please note: The host is NOT responsible for the cleanliness or appearance of the building's basement or if you shrink or ruin your clothes. There is also a neighborhood laundromat 3 blocks away from the building.
The building is centrally located in Pittsburgh within walking, biking, or driving distance of anything including local supermarket, restaurants, bars, liquor store, beer store, Sunoco gas station w/ mini-mart. 5-10 minute walk to Downtown, Cultural District, Theater District, PNC Park (baseball), Heinz Field (football), Convention Center, the Consol Energy Arena (hockey, etc.), the National Aviary, The Andy Warhol Museum, The Mattress Factory Museum, Randyland, The New Hazlett Theater, The Heinz History Center, Strip District Markets (and nightclubs), Strip District Primanti Bros., The Priory Grand Hall (wedding/event hall), a public swimming pool ($4 non-members; open Memorial Day to Labor Day) and all public transportation including Greyhound, Megabus, Amtrak, and the 28X "Airport Flyer" public bus (exact fares subject to change). Large city park across the street. Police patrolled area, and hospital ER is within 2 minutes. The entrance/exit to Interstate 79 in under 1 minute will connect you to any other major highway and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Please note- this is the "CITY" of Pittsburgh so please expect anything/everything common of any major American city and the host is not responsible for anything that occurs to you or your party outside of the property.
PARKING: host has ONE paper-pass to park in the permit zones. Garage space is available upon request only and is subject to availability and the host's discretion. Please confer with host regarding the number of vehicles you plan to have (if any).
The Host! is native Pittsburgher who knows everything about sites, nightlife, history, etc. and can make informed recommendations or suggestions. Also can drive around, pickup, and/or, dropoff at the airport, bus stations, etc., or give tours, for additional costs (or for nothing/ 6 pack of beer) depending on personal availability, circumstances, and the mileage/costs. It is best to pre-discuss these types of things in advance! In general, evening and weekend arrivals and departures have a higher chance of any host-provided transportation- especially the airport. The host has a 7 passenger van.
The host also lives at the property on another separate floor with his wife. We speak Spanish, Portuguese, English, and German. There is also another female who lives at the property on another separate floor and has access to the kitchen. She also sometimes has a boyfriend over but he does not live onsite and they are both fully aware not to disturb the guests (i.e. you). **It is intended that this person will be permanently gone between March and April of 2015**
Special note on musical items: As shown, there is a real mini-spinet piano in the living room. The analog recording equipment may require prior knowledge, or guidance from the host. Other musical instruments (which may require knowledge), and the drum kit are subject to availability depending on gig scheduling. Sometimes, under certain circumstances, the hosts band may take instruments out for gigging purposes and you will be informed in advance. Additionally, you may also make request that the instruments (except the piano in the living room) be completely removed from the rooms for additional floor space. All instrument usage and availability is subject to the host's discretion and comfortability with you using it.
I also book to touring bands and other groups privately and sometimes it does not reflect on the calendar. Any availability is subject to final review.
Notes on pricing/other conditions:
I can negotiate a lower rate for parties of 1-2 except weekends and peak-season (spring, summer, fall). The maximum amount of allowed people in the listing may vary because sometimes couples share the same bed together.
The Jacuzzi I consider an added bonus to your stay- it requires major cleaning and costs a lot of money for natural gas and electricity. and me giving you a very brief set of directions on how to operate. It is requested $20 per hot tub session payable through cash or credit card.
Because it is an indoor tub, occasionally dust or other particles float onto the surface of the water during long periods of non-usage. I try my best to ensure that the water is skimmed. If you want it skimmed- just ask.
Lastly, if you intend to have a party with lots of people outside of your immediate group renting the space (i.e. 2 people rent the space and have over 40 friends that go to college nearby), this must be FULLY FULLY FULLY discussed in advance and may require additional fees, security deposit, waiver, and/or possible denial of your request. You and your immediate group are totally welcome to party as much as you want and can drink and 420. Most likely- the host will party with you if you ask.
Thanks for checking out the listing ! Feel free to ask me any questions or make an offer. I try to answer as many requests as possible- !
Kitchen, large living room, stereo room (1 bed), roof deck, lower small deck, gas grill. Large bedroom (2 beds- 1 room), 1 large bathroom with walk-in shower. Walk-in closet. Jacuzzi (extra) Basement laundry room/garage upon request.
Interaction with Guests
I interact as much or as little as the guest(s) wants me to. As noted in the listing- I do live onsite in a separate part of the house and am generally "on call" as needed.
Laid back, not a lot of crazy nightlife that causes disturbances. There are some nice restaurants and bars/pubs. Centrally located and within walking, biking, driving distance or anything within Pittsburgh. Really close to the stadiums and downtown. It's an inner-city urban environment so expect to see/hear things common to any major US city. There is also a hospital nearby so occasionally you will hear sirens.
Public buses, biking, driving, walking. There is a subway (metro) within 10 minutes that operates from a stop that is adjacent to the "home plate" corner of the baseball stadium (PNC Park).
Rules are shared once you confirm a reservation. If you need them earlier, you may ask.
This was our first visit to Pittsburgh. The experience was excellent. The host was very welcome. He introduced us some sightseeing place. Rooms were precisely as described, spacious, clean, decorated and full of artistic atmosphere. The neighborhood was quiet and close to the downtown. I would definitely recommend it to others.
I had a wonderful stay in Pittsburgh at Alex's place. Everything was just as it had been described online and the appearance of the place matched the photos. Alex was very friendly and welcoming and gave my boyfriend and I some useful tips about the neighborhood. Unfortunately we were so busy that we didn't get a chance to use the hot tub - but we did enjoy listening to records and played a little Nintendo 64!
Excellent stay. Everything was very comfortable and Alex is a great host. Very helpful and easy to reach! Love the place!
Such an amazing cool place! The place is huge and you have a ton of space! My friends and I enjoyed the hot tub and it was an awesome experience! I would recommend Alex's place to anyone! He is so nice and kind and very welcoming! We had such a great stay!
We had a short but amazing stay. Alex was an awesome host, the apartment is incredible, and the neighborhood is cool. We will definitely be back.
Alex's place was cool, just as advertised. A cool, retro apartment and Alex did his best to make us feel welcome. Great location for the Steelers game. We had an awesome time!
Alex was a great host, he gave a detailed tour of the place and also gave very helpful recommendations about what to do in the area. He was also very quick to respond to messages etc. The place was so amazing that we were almost going to decide to stay home, although it was our one and only night in Pittsburgh. It definitely looks better than it does in the pictures and everything was very clean and tidy. Overall we loved our stay and would definitely come back!
