About This Listing
Full of color, light, art and folk art, our home is in walking distance of Cal Poly (10 min) and downtown (25 min). We're happy to share it - and a mini chocolate and wine tasting - with you!
Juliet's room, the front room, is the largest of the three rooms we offer. It has a very comfortable queen bed, a comfy chair, a futon sofa that opens into a bed good for two children, a desk, a closet big enough to put an air bed in it, and windows that open onto the garden.
Juliet and Linnea's rooms have a shared bath, so we try to rent one room at a time, or to rent both rooms to the same party, but there may be times when you are asked if you mind sharing the bath. During peak season weekends, June-August, it's likely that the bathroom will be shared.
The space is big enough to set up an airbed (provided) in addition to the twin size futon, or two air beds. A family of four can sleep in it comfortably.
Groups of two couples:
Though I can set up 2 single air beds, they don't fit next to each other, so this isn't great space for two couples.
It's more a lot more comfortable to reserve both Juliet and Linnea's rooms, so you have both queen beds and the shared bath.
Guests can use the ground floor living room, the gardens and the back deck anytime, and usually the kitchen. There are toys and books in the living room, a big screen for dvds (no TV) and a stack of games for rainy days.
We ask that you respect our family's daily routines when using the space on the second floor: the kitchen, the dining room and the back room. Feel free to make yourself at home if no one else is using the those areas, or ask if it's okay to share them.
The third floor is private.
Interaction with Guests
Tom and I love sharing our home with guests from around the world. Travelers ourselves, and hosts to exchange students and SERVAS travelers for years before discovering Airbnb, there's nothing we enjoy more than a good conversation at the dining room table, on the deck, or by the fire.
San Luis Obispo has amazingly good weather year-around, a vital downtown, many excellent restaurants, wonderful music and arts, and the best chocolate around. It's seven miles from the beach and an hour from Hearst Castle, in the midst of great wine country in Edna Valley, Paso Robles and more.
Our home is in Monterey Heights, the northeast corner of SLO, next to the university campus. My daily dog walks take me either along Cal Poly's horse pasture onto the campus, or up the hill to the very corner of the city, high above the highway as it heads up the grade into the mountains.
A ten minute walk south takes you to San Luis's uptown district, halfway to downtown, where there are plenty of restaurants and cafes: Splash, Steynberg, Central Coast Brewing - and our own Mama Ganache chocolate shop.
San Luis Obispo's charming downtown is bigger than one would expect for a city this size, with a lovely creek walk lined with cafes at its center, interesting side streets, and a mix of local and nationally known stores.
The creek walk goes by the Mission and its garden (don't miss it), the small but always interesting Art Museum and the History Center right across the street, and then continues on to the Children's Museum, which our grandchildren haven't tired of yet.
There's a bus stop two blocks away, the Amtrak station is 10 minutes by car or 25 minutes on foot, and you can walk or bike downtown from here easily, but most guests come by car. The 101 entrance is four blocks away, and highway 1, the Pacific Coast Highway, another four.
Other Things to Note
Tom and I are members of SLOHosts, the group who worked together to keep short-term rentals available here in San Luis Obispo last fall. We voluntarily pay a 10% TOT (room tax) to the city (in addition to state and federal income taxes).
Please stay in close touch about your arrival time so we can be here to welcome you.
Please use water sparingly. We are in the midst of a severe drought.
Parking is restricted in our neighborhood on weekdays. If you come during the week, we have have one parking pass which we will lend you when you come (please remember to give it back!).
If you have more than one car, one will have to be left a few houses up the street at the end of the restricted area. On the weekends there are no restrictions.
Juliet's room is right below our own, so if you come in late, please keep your voices down. There is a strictly enforced 10 PM noise ordinance in the city of San Luis Obispo.
You’re welcome to make yourselves at home in the living room outside the bedrooms anytime, or in the garden or the back deck. Provided we aren’t using it ourselves, feel free use the kitchen and the second floor living space too. The third floor is our private space.
There’s microwave near the refrigerator, an electric kettle and both an espresso machine and a drip coffee maker on the counter that you can use. Coffee is in the freezer, tea in boxes and tins by the kettle. Cups are hanging above the coffee machines, glasses are in the cabinet above the microwave.
The tap water is delicious.
Lily Bear is a rescued Chow Golden Retriever. She can be barky and will occasionally growl because she’s still a little fearful, but if you completely ignore her at first, she’ll come to you. If she barks as you leave the house tell her “Bear stays” firmly and she’ll get the message. She rarely tries to get out the front door, but if she does get out, leave the door wide open and walk away from it to where she can’t see you, and she’ll come back in a few minutes.
The black cats are Olive and Alice. They live upstairs. It’s fine to let them in the front door so they can scoot up the stairs before Bear sees them.
Leave the lights on in the entry hall when you go to bed. Someone will turn them off.
Same as the night before ! We enjoyed our stay in Eve and Tom's home.
Eve and her husband were very great hosts and seemed very open and sociable. Their house was really beautiful as well as our room. The kitchen had all the utensils we could imagine and that she served breakfast and even wine with chocolate was amazing. All in all one of our best airbnb experiences!
Eve and Tom are the very best! So welcoming, friendly and eager to assist their visitors. Their home is lovely and the neighborhood is delightful. It was only a short walk to CalPoly for our daughter's graduation. I know many students live in the area, but every night is was blissfully quiet by 10:00 pm. It was so relaxing to sit in the garden with a good book between bouts of family activities. We felt completely at home, which I never feel in a hotel/motel. I will certainly look at AirB&B again when I am traveling, in the hopes of finding more wonderful hosts like Eve and Tom.
Only stayed for one night could have stayed for more. Eves home is a sanctuary warm, welcoming and has everything you need and more. A true geem. Would recomend anytime.
Staying in Juliet's room for two nights was wonderful. Most comfortable for sleeping two people but definitely able to sleep four (like we did). Eve and Tom were very pleasant and took good care of us during our stay. They are very flexible regarding sharing common space with everyone in the house. The chocolate treats were a cute touch. This house is super charming and eclectic and is in a great location for exploring SLO. We would definitely recommend this home for an enjoyable and relaxing stay.
I had a great experience at Eve's home. She made me feel incredibly welcome! I was coming in late from a wedding and she prepared the room for us with comprehensive details about her home, and chocolate on each bed.
There was another guest staying in a separate bedroom therefore Eve made sure we were aware that they were there, and reminded us to knock before entering the bathroom (so we wouldn't have an awkward run-in)!
I would stay at Eve's charming home again, and recommend it to anyone in need of a place to stay in SLO!
My boyfriend, my friend Sara, and I stayed in Juliet's room in SLO for one night and had a great stay there! We were greeted by Eve and her adorable dog Lily Bear with three delicious chocolates and a wine pairing waiting for us. Our room was very clean and spacious and had an airbed set up in addition to the large bed. The airbed wasn't the most comfortable, but wasn't much of an issue for the night. We had a shared bathroom with other guests, which wasn't a problem as we were made aware to knock on the door to make sure it was unoccupied before entering. I appreciate that there were towels and bathroom supplies waiting for us.
The house as a whole was very beautiful, colorful, bright, and fun. We felt very welcome there. There was a large living area near our room as well as a nice kitchen. There was even a separate fridge and freezer for guests to keep food in.
The area is peaceful and quiet and a short drive or walk to downtown (about 2 miles). We took advantage of the lovely hiking nearby and did Bishop Peak at Eve's suggestion!
We really enjoyed our stay here and wish we could have stayed longer. I would definitely recommend staying at this lovely home for anyone looking for a place in SLO who don't mind sharing the space with hosts or other guests. For us, we enjoyed the opportunity to meet new people! Thanks for everything!
