Slow down in SLO - Juliet's room

House - Private room · McCollum St, San Luis Obispo, CA 93405, United States

Come stay in our spacious home in walking distance of Cal Poly (10 min) and downtown (25 min). Full of color, light, art and folk art, the house was designed in early 90's by Steven Pults. Now, with our kids gone, we're happy to share it with you.

The Space

Juliet's room, the front room, is the largest of the three rooms we offer. It has a very comfortable queen bed plus a futon sofa that opens into a double bed, a desk, a huge closet - we often put an airbed in it - and windows that open onto the garden.

The space is big enough to set up an airbed (provided) in addition to the sofa, so a family of five can sleep in it comfortably.

Juliet and Linnea's rooms have a shared bath, so we try to rent one room at a time, or to rent both rooms to the same party, but there may be times when you are asked if you mind sharing the bath.

Guest Access

Guests can use the ground floor living room, the gardens and the back deck anytime, and usually the kitchen. There are toys and books in the living room, a big screen for dvds (no TV) and a stack of games for rainy days.

We ask that you respect our family's daily routines when using the space on the second floor: the kitchen, the dining room and the back room. Feel free to make yourself at home if no one else is using the those areas, or ask if it's okay to share them.

The third floor is private.

Interaction with Guests

Tom and I love sharing our home with guests from around the world. Travelers ourselves, and hosts to exchange students and SERVAS travelers for years before discovering Airbnb, there's nothing we enjoy more (email hidden)ly conversation at the dining room table, on the deck, or by the fire.

The Neighborhood

San Luis Obispo has amazingly good weather year-(email hidden)ly downtown, many excellent restaurants, wonderful music and arts, and the best chocolate around. It's seven miles from the beach and an hour from Hearst Castle, in the midst of great wine country in Edna Valley, Paso Robles and more.

Our home is in Monterey Heights, the northeast corner of SLO, next to the university campus. My daily dog walks take me either along Cal Poly's horse pasture onto the campus, or up the hill to the very corner of the city, high above the highway as it heads up the grade into the mountains.

A ten minute walk south takes you to San Luis's uptown district, halfway to downtown, where there are plenty of restaurants and cafes: Splash, Steynberg, Central Coast Brewing - and our own Mama Ganache chocolate shop.

San Luis Obispo's charming downtown is bigger than one would expect for a city this size, with a lovely creek walk lined with cafes at its center, interesting side streets, and a mix of local and nationally known stores.

The creek walk goes by the Mission and its garden (don't miss it), the small but always interesting Art Museum and the History Center right across the street, and then continues on to the Children's Museum, which our grandchildren haven't tired of yet.

Getting around

There's a bus stop two blocks away, the Amtrak station is 10 minutes by car or 25 minutes on foot, and you can walk or bike downtown from here easily, but most guests come by car. The 101 entrance is four blocks away, and highway 1, the Pacific Coast Highway, another four.

Other Things to Note

Tom and I are members of SLOHosts, the group who worked together to keep short-term rentals available here in San Luis Obispo last fall. We voluntarily pay a 10% TOT (room tax) to the city (in addition to state and federal income taxes).

  • Staying at Eve and Tom's was a delight. Their home is charming and restful and filled with many small touches that made our stay special. The beds were comfy and we enjoyed our stay. Eve was a pleasure to speak with over morning coffee and I enjoyed having an opportunity to share experiences and tales of past adventures and events with such a gracious hostess. Would recommend to all in search of a restful and charming time.

  • We had two lovely days with Eve and Tom in their beautiful home. The house itself is charming and delightful with interesting gems in every corner to peer at and admire. They had a bountiful basket of goodies in the bedroom full of fruit and other snacks. A very comfortable bed with soothing sheets. But most importantly, they were helpful hosts with suggestions for us when we asked.

  • We were such late arriving guests Eve was so kind to wait up for us and help us find the house. Should not count on Mapquest to get the time right on how long it takes to get there from the Desert. We were very tried and it was so awesome that everything was ready for us to just climb into bed. What a wonderful couple. Very warm and inviting. Eve's house was so full of color it is giving me the confidence to jazz up my own place..thank you for the inspiration!!!!!! It may have been a quick stay but great none the less. Thanks!!!!!!!!!

  • A road trip along Pacific Coast Highway should be free and spontaneous. We set out at 8 a.m. from San Diego not knowing where the day would take us. The coast to L.A. was nice and a perfect start to the adventure. A late lunch in Venice hit the spot and the sun set just out side San Luis Obispo was icing on the day. But sitting in the Side Car Bar in downtown SLO we knew our travels were done for the day. At 8:30 p.m. without a spot to stay AirBnb was there to liberate us from the tyranny of planned travels. We found Eve's place in short order with the computer in our pocket. We anxiously asked if on such late notice the space was available not even expecting a response. But the social fabric of AirBnb is strong and very malleable. Within 15 minutes we had a confirmation on a room at 3/4 of the price of a dingy hotel. Eve was an extremely gracious host leaving a party early to accomodate our arrival. The room was clean, quiet, airy and felt like home. Eve provided coffee and thoughtful conversation in the morning. We parted ways and have already recommended the house to travelers along the way. AirBnb and Eve allowed us to experience the Pacific Coast Highway exactly as we would like!

    THANK YOU!

  • My 17 year-old daughter and I stayed in Eve's home for 3 days. We enjoyed our time there immensely. Eve was very welcoming, warm, easy-going and caring. I enjoyed talking with her, learning about her background, and hearing her family stories. We would definitely and happily return to stay in her beautiful home.

  • We stayed at Eve and Tom's home for one night. What a beautiful place! And they both were fantastic hosts. We had a great conversation that night around cups of tea. They were very accommodating to our needs and gave good advice about San Luis Obispo's restaurants and places to visit.

  • Eve's house was absolutely perfect for our stay in SLO. The room was spacious and clean, and their house was stunning to see! I took a morning run around the neighborhood, and it was gorgeous. The little chocolates were such a nice surprise too... wonderful place and we'd recommend it to anyone!

  • A beautiful home close to lots of fun places to shop and eat. There was a living room for us to hang out in as guests, a refrigerator, and we were welcome to use the coffee maker and teapot in the morning. We shared a bathroom between two rooms but it wasn't a big deal because it was within our party. We had originally booked one room for 5 people, but ended up needing two. Very gracious hosts!
