About This Listing
One of the 10 most beautiful villages in Italy- according to the Huffington Post- Sorano is an exceptionally well preserved medieval hill town in the Alta Maremma area of Tuscany.
The location of Sorano is ideal. Equidistant from Rome and Florence. 45 minutes from Orvieto to the East, and 45 minutes from Orbetello and the beautiful Costa d'Argento of the Mediterranean to the West. 75 minutes to Siena. 25 Minutes to the lovely Lake Bolsena. Described by a guest as a "nid douillet"- a cosy nest-, the "Swift's View" apartment is located in the historic center of the town, and affords wonderful views down to the valley of the Lente river over terra cotta roof tops. The name of the apartment is inspired by the ethereal birds that nest in the volcanic tufa stone walls of the town. Wifi is available and parking is a short walk away. The apartment is on 2 levels. The main floor is the living area and kitchen, with a large 14th century fireplace and a pull out couch that could sleep an additional 2 people. The lower floor, accessed by three steps, contains the bedroom and bathroom. The owner/host lives in the adjacent 3 bedroom house, which is also available to rent by special request. Both places were renovated as period homes with great attention to detail by the owner, and are furnished with lovely antiques. The cul-de-sac, where the apartment is located, can be used to eat al fresco- and the opposite cantina is usually open for an excellent glass of homemade wine. From May, 2015 I have listed another apartment- Casa Bianca in Tuscany- which is directly opposite this property. The two apartments, if available, can be rented together, and a special rate can be arranged.
I'm pretty easy- and I usually will be your next-door neighbor, as my home is adjacent to the rental apartment. Sorano is a very quiet place, so as long as you respect the peaceful atmosphere, all will be well.
I puzzled for some days as to how to respond to Slava’s review. I will say that as a host you are bound to have an occasional difficult guest, and Slava was probably the most contrary one I have had to date. I had nothing particularly positive to relate about him, so I left him no review. He was such a particular character that he will probably be talked about in town for some time to come. Slava complained about the church bells and the chiming of the town clock. They have never bothered anyone before, and my apartment is quite far from both, so only the most sensitive person could find them troublesome. Slava insisted that I keep the apartment at 24 degrees celsius- which I explained is well above the maximum lawful limit for houses in Italy, but I did my best to keep him comfortable. There is a washing machine available, but Slava demanded that I do his laundry- which I graciously did on two occasions. Slava intimated that the price of my apartment is high. In fact it is lower than many others in the area, and certainly within the median. I will add that the vast majority of people who have rented the apartment have left very positive reviews.
We stayed at Chris' house for a little less than a week and had a wonderful time getting lost in the streets of Sorano.
The house is smack bang at the centre of the medieval village, overlooking the neighbours' rooftops and the Lente valley. The interior is tastefully decorated and congruous with the fairytale surroundings. The kitchen had all the essentials and WiFi signal was good. The bed was a little small for tall people like my partner and may not be suitable for couples who both like to hog the bed. This was only a minor issue during our short stay. Also useful to note that the washing machine is in Chris' house next door and our load of washing was returned on the next day.
Chris is a friendly chap and has been an exceptional host. On our arrival, he offered us breakfast basics, fruits from his garden as well as home-made tomato sauce. He was also prompt to answer our touristy questions and keen to share his local knowledge in the area, his advice was valuable. Chris even lent us beach towels and shared his secluded garden space with us (which is a great spot for a private picnic or a photography session).
After touring villages in the area, we still haven't found a place that matches Sorano's period charm. We would love to return and recommend this special spot in Tuscany.
I am very glad that Karen and Andrew enjoyed their stay. The bed they mention is a double bed- known as a "letto matrimoniale" in Italy- 190cm/75in x 150cm/60in. However the bed is slightly irregular and missing a small 25 square centimeters portion at the foot as I fit it into medieval walls. Most people find it to be quite charming. The woolen sprung mattress was custom-made. Additionally, there is a comfortable pullout couch in the living room- which is also a double size bed.
Chris was interested, if I needed any help. The apartment was very charming, a quiet place to enjoy the time. It would be nice to come again!
We had an amazing experience staying in this beautiful space in the beautiful medieval village of Sorano! Chris is an excellent host and very knowledgeable about the region - he helped us plan a fantastic day trip. Wish we had stayed longer! The apt was clean, cozy and quiet - the views were breathtaking. We'll DEFinitely be back!!
Our stay at Chris' place was phantastic and we loved it there. The apartment is small but very cosy, we felt at home soon. the bathroom is quite simple, but that fits perfectly in this old building and this old mediaeval town. The town Sorano is really worth visiting, we wish we could have stayed longer. Chris was a very kind host and a nice and interesting person. He picked us up at the parking place to guide us to his house and even helped us carrying our luggage. In the flat there was wine and marmalade as a welcoming gift (he makes it himself!), even bread and fruits as the shops were closed that afternoon. Chris gave us lots of tipps were to eat or go and told us interesting stories about the history of the town. We felt very welcomed! Because of all this we really recommend to stay here.
