About this listing
A beautiful artsy house in the midst of the rapidly growing Temescal neighborhood. Many interesting shops, cafes and restaurants nearby. A shared house with 4 rooms and 2 baths. a nice mix of interesting travelers and fabulous longer term tenants.
Nice, good sized room. Bath attached to room. You share bath with another bedroom on the other side of bath, if that room is occupied. Very nice comfortable bed with nice duvet and crisp cotton sheets. Variety of pillows: down, therapeutic foam, hypo allergenic..
I have a huge fabulous garden in back of the house, nice for reading, and flowers and fruit in spring/summer. I can help you with places to go, and other suggestions. Parking on the street is free. Bike rental available.
Guests can use fridge, kitchen (fully stocked with pots, knives, dishes etc), living room, dining room, garden. Laundry is on site to use, but you may have to buy detergent (non scented please!)...I strongly encourage hanging the laundry to dry in the yard...I will even give incentive. Excessive laundry use will be charged.
Interaction with Guests
I currently don't live at the house, but nearby in SW Berkeley. I do come around some, to work in the garden, and am happy to offer information about the area as needed. Currently the rest of the house is occupied by 3 friendly guys: one in the non-profit education world, a (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) videographer/photographer, a programmer at a start up in SF, all in their 20s/early 30s.
Home is smack dab right in the heart of Temescal, Oakland's cool blossoming neighborhood. With tons of great restaurants, shops and cafes just down the street--every month there seem to be new ones, covering a multitude of countries, Ethiopia, Mexico, India, Italy, Spain, Korea, Japan, Burma, Southern US all well represented--To name some you could look up: Pizzaiolo, Barlata, Burma Superstar, Beauty Bagels, La Calaca Loca, Juhu Beach, Aunt Mary's Cafe, Genova Delicatessen (since the '50s or more), Dolly's Doughnuts, Asmara (Ethiopian), Bakesale Betty's, Koryo Sushi, Tofu House...and then Peet's (URL HIDDEN) is a food lover's spot.
The house is very close to major freeway (580/24) and BART (Macarthur or Rockridge, a 10-15 min walk, depending on how fast you walk). There is a very convenient bus, 15 min, from the corner to UC Berkeley or downtown Oakland, and a bus to SF pretty close by. It is also a 10 minute walk to the casual commute...a way to get a ride with other commuters into SF for free (or a small donation for gas) during morning rush hours.
Other Things to Note
Towels are provided. There is soap. Bring your own shampoo, conditioner...but please not super perfumed ones!
This is a shared house, with several guests/tenants at the same time. There is no maid service, and people are asked to clean up after themselves, and to sort out the garbage (recycling, compost, landfill). Lessons happily given as this can get confusing for some people, but willingness to learn is required.
In summer there is a lot of fruit and such in the garden that you can pick and enjoy.
No tobacco smoking on the property. No smoke or incense indoors, at all. Some food storage OK. Light kitchen use ok, but you must clean up when you use it. Please, no perfumes, strong scented products/deodorants. I ask people to be mindful of garbage separation with recycling, compost, and landfill.
