This apartment is located on Via degli Scipioni, in Prati, very close to the Vatican.
Via Giulio Cesare (a few metres from the apartment) is very close to Piazza del Risorgimento, a well-known square in Rome, and the last “modern Rome” spot that pilgrims and visitors in general go through before arriving at the Vatican City through Via di Porta Angelica. People from all over the world gather around this square to get to Piazza San Pietro, and every morning groups of all sizes walk along the Vatican Walls in order to get to the Vatican Museums, definitely a must for those who like art – and even for those who do not like it quite so much, the Sixtine Chapel (where new Popes are elected during the conclave) is definitely worth seeing!
The area also allows visitors to enjoy all the facilities that modern Rome offers – Viale Giulio Cesare and well as Via Ottaviano offer locals and visitors the oportunity to do some sensible shopping without having to leave the city centre.
As for public transportation, the Ottaviano and Lepanto metro stops (Line A) can be reached in a few minutes. A great number of buses also stop at Piazza del Risorgimento, allowing you to get virtually anywhere in the city.
Overall our stay was good but there were some problems.
Firstly, Enrico is an agent rather than the apartment owner. I don't necessarily mind personally but it did cause some problems as described below.
The owner of the apartment is a man named Massimo who dealt with our check in etc. Massimo was relatively nice, but became rather angry when I asked where the closest ATM was so that I could withdraw cash to pay for the deposit - he demanded it on the spot and was angry that we would be making him wait for it. Luckily from our whole group we managed to scrape together 100 euros.
Also, when we checked in, Massimo told us no internet was available - I was confused but did not initially argue as after a long spell of travelling in the morning, I thought it may have been my mistake in booking somewhere without internet. However, upon rechecking the airbnb listing, internet was advertised.
I contacted Enrico and he immediately contacted Massimo, making him bring a USB internet dongle over. It meant a couple of hours waiting but at least it gave us internet access which was important. It wasn't Wi-Fi liked we hoped but it was at least something.
Apart from that, the apartment was great - very clean, nice beds, fans in every room if not air conditioning. It was very loud at times given the busy road outside and the many motorcycles that would drive past but that is perhaps to be expected in an area of the city this central.
The apartment is perfectly located for using the metro and for walking to the Vatican - it's also not too hard to walk all the way into the city centre and see all the sights as we did.
If the apartment had Wi-Fi and we didn't have the check in problems, the apartment would have been perfect! In any case, we would probably stay here again and it was great value for money.
I did not meet Enrico but he was helpful in arranging the accommodation and Mr Massimo from Italyrents met us on arrival. The apartment was spacious though the one sofa was in a bedroom so we sat mainly in the kitchen. The location was good, 10 mins from the Vatican and it is a nice area and near a good supermarket, a laundarette is on the street nearby and a direct metro line to Termini Station is round the corner. The lift is very old and small but good as there are a lot of stairs.
