About this listing
Santo Stefano in Aspromonte is located about 12 km northeast of Reggio Calabria.
This little southern italian village is based in the National Park of Aspromonte.
Its tranquil location is surrounded by beautiful mountains covered by miles and miles of forests.
You can taste a typical small italian village atmosphere in Santo Stefano where a local grocer, a butcher, a bread maker and a fruit seller pass by the house with a tiny furgoncino on three wheels and beeps with its horn asking customers to buy his local produce.
Summer/Autumn seasons you may go birds watching, hiking, mushroom picking, swimming in waterfalls of Maesano, cycling and etc. Winter in Aspromonte is popular for skiing.
The house is very close to the centre of Santo Stefano – less than 1 min walk and you are on Corso Caribaldi where the local bar is located.
The house is divided in two floors - 100m2 and functional. It contains a kitchen/dinning room, a sitting room, a bedroom and a bathroom.
In the living room, there is a futon-sofa which unfolded becomes a proper double bed and a single bed.
The house will have for your stay
- fresh towels and bed linen
- shower gel and shampoo
- tea, coffee, sugar…….all that kitchen contains
Santo Stefano is a great place to breath in fresh forest air and enjoy slow pace of village life.
This property can be rented together with 'Beau mountain house in S. Stefano' as they both belong to the same family and are located almost next door to each other. This way the total capacity of people increases up to 13.
Guests should be mature and responsible enough to respect house& its belongings, and my neighbors peace of mind. No smoking in the house. Any extra guests during the stay must be communicated and agreed to by the owner -this will be monitored. Other than this, just use common sense.
Note - please remove the rubbish after your stay.
If you are ready to get away from the noise and intensity of city Italy Santo Stefano is wonderfully relaxing. Make sure you take the long route through the forest. In November we caught beautiful fall foliage. Victoria's apartment features a wood heat stove in the kitchen (conventional heat in bedroom & living room). The place is cozy. They even left us a bottle of family production wine! We only wished we had time to hike in the national park. Highly recommended for a soothing break from Italy's organized chaos.
We had a lovely stay. We were made very welcome when we arrived and were provided with fresh tomatoes, onions and chillis which made for a great supper! The place was comfortable and well equipped - we were not able to use the internet but this could have been our mistake! Santo Stefano is quiet and peaceful but there was a supermarket right by the house and fresh bread down the road. Before we left, Victoria's family insisted on sharing a bottle of home-brewed wine with us - it was amazing!
We were very happy to stay at Victorias place in Santo Stefano. It's a small sleepy village tucked away in sleepy corner of Calabria high in the Aspromonte mountains. Be prepared for a windy ascent!
We were cheerfully greeted by Victorias uncle who provided us with some of his delicious figs and tomatoes and vino rosso. We were delighted and made to feel right at home. The house is well appointed with internet, TV, air con and heating, and a lovely big kitchen. If you want to eat out be prepared to drive to the next town Gamberie (a ski resort in winter) as nothing was open at night in St Stefano during our stay. The temperature can be much lower up in Aspromonte compared to the coast so make sure you have some warm (website hidden) Stefano is whisper quiet so if you want to get away from noise it's perfect.
Communication with Victoria was excellent. She provides clear printed instructions for the house with suggestions for sightseeing and restaurants.

I am happy to recommend the Santo Stefano apartment. My husband and I were travelling in Calabria and wanted to experience the mountains instead of the usual seaside resorts. Victoria's place gave us the perfect opportunity; it is truly off the beaten path in a small mountain town with beautiful scenery.
We were met by Victoria's friend and his mother who very kindly explained the features of the place and left us with a bottle of local wine and a basket of fresh produce, including the famous Calabrian hot peppers, which we used to make dinner one night. There is a grocery store steps away and we found good bread, coffee and restaurants a short drive away.
I thank Victoria for helping us to discover a beautiful and overlooked part of Italy.
