The space

The Hillside Lodge is idyllically nestled in the Lao countryside. A nature retreat yet only 12 km from Luang Prabang, surrounded by protected area with primary forest, and with mountain views.

We are a family run place offering authentic bungalows with a twist of style for only 20 guests. Set amidst a lush tropical garden, it’s a heaven for a variety of beautiful butterflies.

The 9 charming bungalows are spread out on a small hill, with views over the lush tropical garden and the mountains. All rooms are built with locally grown wood and come with bamboo ceilings and polished wooden floors, and are just a few steps away from the swimming pool.

Come and enjoy our small private paradise, discover undisturbed surroundings off the beaten track. Explore ethnic villages, hike to a hidden waterfall, relax at the pool. Enjoy our own organically grown food, and indulge yourself in nature’s beauty.

We offer guided hikes, we have mountain bikes for rent, or you can easily go on a self-guided walk.

Our mission is based on ecologically and socially sustainable principles. We care for our nature and the local communities.

Your host will be Quentin, the French manager who takes care of your needs and wishes together with his enthusiastic Lao team.

Most probably, you will also meet me, Holger (German), and my Lao wife Aloun. We are the owners who made a dream come true. The mission was to create a unique place that we love and embrace, and that we can share with our guests from all over the world.

Lunch and diner are served in the a la carte restaurant.

Twin or Double beds depending on availability. We also have a family bungalow with one king sized bed and 2 single beds. Available on request.

Guest access

Hillside offers a outdoor a swimming pool, a herbal steam bath, an organic garden, bicycle rental, petanque court, a beach volley ball court and a couple of self-guided treks. One of us, whether Aloun, Holger or Pierre will be around all the time. Aloun is of Laotian nationality and Holger explored almost every inch in Laos by motorbike. Therefor we are happy to give advises concerning excursions around Luang Prabang or even concerning the planning of the ongoing travel in Laos after you stay at Hillside.

Although not quite what we expected, the Hillside property offers a unique opportunity to see the Luang Prabang country-side and visit rural villages. The pool is a nice amenity that is not common amongst other airbnbs in the area. The property is a good option for adventure-seekers looking to explore the nearby trails or wanting to zip-line at the recreational park nearby. Holgar offered a warm welcome and we had a great time hearing about his experiences in SE Asia.

This is an amazing escape but with lots of quirks. If you are visiting Luang Prabang and wanting to see Luang Prabang – this is not your place. It is incredibly remote even though it's only 20km away. It takes 25-35 minutes by car and costing $20 each way by tuktuks IF you find one that's willing to take you there. Taxis are non-existence. If you want to go into town, there's a shuttle into town at 10:30am and 5pm return ($4 each way) though other accommodations can be made if the staff is going to or from. You're pretty much SOL if you want to see the almsgiving (starts at 5:30am) or attend the night market (starts at 6pm) both of which I highly recommended. We ended up renting a car for a day ($100) to get around which ended up being cheaper and better than any of the tours offered. You should definitely look into it. Kuangxi waterfalls are amazing – don't leave Luang Prabang without seeing it. On that note, there are some incredibly things about Hillside. For starter, Holger and the staff are incredibly helpful and VERY accommodating. Pierre, the host, is charming, funny and reminded me of Lumière from Beauty and the Beast. I don't have enough praises for him and the Laotian staff that help manage the property. They made the trip worth it. My overall experience was positive and I would recommend the place to my friends if they're looking for a nature retreat. If you're looking for a place to hike, read a book, while immersed in a bucolic jungle setting – look no further. This is your place.

I cannot recommend this place enough. Hillside surpassed my expectations and is a lovely place all around. The atmosphere (literally in the lush mountains), the delicious and reasonably priced food, and (URL HIDDEN) was all perfect. Communication was great from the start and I even had a ride organized from the airport (which I would recommend since it is quite a ways from town). I especially appreciated the effort that the chef made to prepare my food vegan (pancakes, papaya salad, curries, tofu noodles). Definitely go to both waterfalls and have a lemongrass steam bath! If I were to have any complaints it would be the lack of markers for the trails. Buddy, the dog, led me along so I was perfectly fine on the trails but other guests seemed to be getting "lost" quite easily. It's always easy to return to the main road but overgrown trails posed an issue. Also the "American" in me hated the smoking that happened on the restaurant deck, but everyone staying in the resort was European so it made sense.

Response from Aloun & Holger:
Hi Jenny, thank you very much for your lovely review, we di in deed feel very flattered! I am also happy that i can inform you that the last 2 weeks we had been working on our treks. We cleaned up all the tracks, were painting an mounting new signs, closed down some pathways (because villagers don't use them anymore and is to time intense to keep them cleaned) but also opened a couple of new ones. Buddy is a bit confused in the moment, especially about the pathways he doesn't know yet but he is a fast learner! At Hillside we are actually proud of the self-guided trekking we provide, and as far as we know, we are the only one all over South East Asia offering something like that. This is one of the things that makes Hillside a unique place. One more time thank you very much for taking the time and writing a review for us. I wish you all the best for your new phase of life and your professional development and in the name of the whole team i can tell you that we would feel very pleased if we get the chance to welcome you again. We had a great time staying at Hillside. Holger and Aloun were wonderful hosts who were attentive to our needs. Hillside is far out of town, and transportation is limited, so we rented a motorbike to come and go as we pleased — a good choice. The food was excellent, Holger provided great travel advice, and our bungalow was very quiet. We were lulled to sleep by the sounds of the jungle. The swimming pool was excellent, and the environment was very laid back. In our experience, this was a very comfortable place to have a few days of peace and quiet in the midst of our SE Asia travels.

Thank you very much Aloun & Holger for these beautiful and unforgettable days I spent at the Hillside lodge. The nature is so close, you can feel, see and hear it. The food is absolutely delicious, the staff is so nice and kind and one other reason it was hard for me to leave was Buddy, the dog and best guide I ever had on a day trip, he knows all the nice places around the lodge and he makes sure you don't loose track:) Also I learned a lot about Laos which I very much appreciated. Definitely of these magical places you are looking for in the world!:)

We, Holger and Aloun, as a German-Lao couple know how to focus on authentic Lao lifestyle, while still considering the needs and wishes of our Western guests . The mission was to create unique places that we love and embrace, and that we can share with nature lovers from all over the world.

At Hillside Lodge your host will be Pierre, the French Manager. The three of us - together with our Lao team - make sure that our guests get personal attention, feel at home, and take a memorable experience back home. Our place is about a lifestyle close to nature, away from the city hustle. It’s made of a dream, and the dream came true.

In the heritage house downtown in the city of Luang Prabang we will welcome you and take care of you by ourselves. Residing in the spacious heritage house it is all about experiencing a true and authentic lao life style but also being close to the sightseeing hot spots as well.

Welcome to our to our 'the best out of two worlds'!
